California: the Greece of the US financial crisis

Greece and California are reaching a teachable moment: You can't get out of debt by piling on more debt.

Oh my, oh my?this is getting interesting?

Bill has written two New York Times best-selling books, Financial Reckoning Day and Empire of Debt. With political journalist Lila Rajiva, he wrote his third New York Times best-selling book, Mobs, Messiahs and Markets, which offers concrete advice on how to avoid the public spectacle of modern finance. ?How zombie consumers menace the world economy,? is a headline from Yale Professor Stephen Roach. Mr. Roach is misusing the word ?zombie,? but he?s coming closer to understanding what is really going on.

That is, he?s beginning to see things our way!

Greek 2-year debt was yielding over 30% on Friday. Everybody said the situation was dire. And everybody agreed that this time, the Greeks were not likely to get away without a default of some sort.

This is a great moment for the world?s intellectual and moral life. Suddenly, people are beginning to realize that you can?t make bad debt go away by piling more debt on top of it. And yes, when you make mistakes, you have to pay for them.

Perhaps this insight could be teased out into a broader, deeper understanding of how life actually works. Maybe it is true, after all, that you can?t create real wealth by printing up pieces of paper. And maybe it?s also true that economists working for central banks can?t do a better job of running an economy than they can of running an anthill. Maybe central planning doesn?t work after all?

And maybe there are some things you just should not do?such as spend too much money. Or murder people, even if you don?t like them. Or send photos of yourself in a ridiculous, obscene pose via the Internet.

Yes, dear reader, maybe there are some things that are right?and other things that are wrong ? no matter how smart you are.

As Mr. Yanis Varoufakis, an economics professor at the University of Athens, explained to The International Herald Tribune:

?When you are insolvent you do not solve things with new and larger loans.?

In Europe, the very smart financial authorities kicked the can down the road. And now they?re tripping over the can.

In America, they kicked the can so far you can barely see it. And it?s the size of a 55-gallon drum.

Europe?s problem is sovereign debt ? government debt ? and bank debt. America?s problem is private debt now, government debt later.

Europe could fairly easily solve its problem. Greece doesn?t really matter to anyone ? not even to the Greeks. It could be cut loose. Abandoned. Allowed to go broke, as we predicted it would a couple years ago.

The problem is that there is an ankle bone connected to the leg-bone?and the foot-bone is connected to the ankle bone. And without feet or legs, Europe can?t walk. The big banks ? especially French banks ? hold Greek debt. If the loans go bad in a big way, the banks will probably go broke too. That?s why Moody?s downgraded the banks last week.

The press says authorities are worried that one thing will lead to another?and pretty soon it will get out of hand. They say they?re afraid of a ?Lehman moment.? But what they?re really frightened by is something that happened closer to home. It?s a ?Creditanstalt moment? they fear most.

Creditanstalt was an Austrian bank that went broke in 1931. Before it went under, most people had never heard of it. But after it couldn?t pay its bills it became infamous. The bank owed a lot of money to a lot of other banks?and then they couldn?t pay their bills either?then, the whole banking system went bust. The Great Depression resulted ? in which nearly half of America?s 25,000 banks failed.

So, the authorities want to avoid a Great Depression. Very understandable. But what?s the plan? To kick the can farther? What do they do when they catch up to it again?

In the US meanwhile, it is consumer debt that is the immediate problem. There too the authorities booted it down the road as best they could. But in the New World as in the Old, there?s always something that goes wrong. You refinance Ireland?and Portugal needs cash. You give the Portuguese some money?and then the Greeks threaten to go belly-up.

In the US, the authorities refinanced the banks. The bankers got their usual bonuses ? and more. But they couldn?t do much about consumers. The poor working stiffs were losing jobs, income, and housing wealth ? all at the same time.

And now, with their lack of purchasing power, US consumers have the whole world economy at gun-point. ?One false move?and you?re all dead!? More below:

America?s Greece may be California.

?California nearing fiscal crisis,? reports The Financial Times. Governor Jerry Brown vetoed a budget plan. He said it wouldn?t do the job. We didn?t see the plan, but our guess is that Brown is right. But this leaves the Golden State in a fix. It needs money. And like Greece, it can?t print its own.

Samsung Galaxy S II headed to Bell on July 14

We've already heard an earful about which US carriers will likely score the Samsung Galaxy S II (and its rumored cousin), and now we're also getting some fuller details about its availability in Canada. Just days after SaskTel confirmed it'll sell the skinny, Gingerbread-packing phone next month, Tech F.I.B.E. is reporting that handset is headed to Bell's 21Mbps-capable network on July 14. If you remember, the dual-core phone won us over in our review with its svelte chassis, vibrant Super AMOLED Plus display, zippy performance, and impressive 8 megapixel camera. No word yet on how much Bell will charge for that superb chunk of hardware, but it looks like we'll find out in a matter of weeks.

Older Women With Breast Cancer Probably Won't Die From It: Study (HealthDay)

TUESDAY, June 21 (HealthDay News) -- Older women with breast cancer are more likely to die from cardiovascular disease and other causes than from their cancer, a new study finds.

Researchers analyzed data from more than 60,000 women in the United States, aged 66 and older, who were followed for at least 12 years after being diagnosed with breast cancer.

By the end of the follow-up period, nearly half of the women were still alive. Those who died lived to an average age of 83 and more than two-thirds of them died from causes other than breast cancer. In fact, cardiovascular disease killed more of the women than breast cancer.

Women who were most likely to die of breast cancer included those who were diagnosed at a younger age and those with a high tumor grade or estrogen receptor-negative status.

The pattern seen among the women in the study matches the pattern for women in the general population, where cardiovascular disease is the leading killer, the researchers said.

The study appears June 21 in the journal Breast Cancer Research.

"Cancer is a big killer and is responsible for about a quarter of all deaths. However, breast cancer is not necessarily a death sentence and patients need to take care of their health to reduce their risk of dying from heart disease and other age-related diseases," study author Jennifer Patnaik, of the University of Colorado, said in a journal news release.

Michael Rosenberg: Pulling for Jimmer Fredette to succeed in NBA

Jimmer Fredette had the green light to shoot anytime at BYU, but he'll have to fit into the right system at the next level.

Landov

Jimmer Fredette is not the best player in this NBA draft, or the tallest, or the quickest, or the fastest, or the shortest. But he is the most controversial. It's not his fault. Fredette draws opinions like he drew defenders at BYU -- two come from opposite directions at the same time. He is a gunner and one of the most entertaining college players of the last decade, and this and plus there is the fact that ... he is white?

Yes. That.

The NBA is built on personalities. Even more than that, it's built on personas. We need some variety, and a short white dude from BYU who can fill it up would have a unique persona. (He would also make a great trivia question on Basketball Jeopardy: "This shoot-first guard's brother, a rapper, made him hone his game as a kid against prisoners." Jimmer! It's true. Look it up.)

So let me say, up front, that I want Jimmer (or The Jimmer, if you are so inclined) to succeed in the NBA. I want it for the same reason I wanted Allen Iverson to win and hoped Adam Morrison would not completely suck and wished Emeka Okafor would become the next Hakeem Olajuwon. I watch college ball and the NBA and I want a connection between the two.

Fredette averaged 28.9 points per game for a BYU team that averaged 81. Watching him was a pleasure. I would love to see his game translate to the NBA level.

Unfortunately, there is a disconnect between what I want and what I expect. Can Jimmer Fredette really be a key player on a contending team? He is a 6-foot-2 shooting guard who hasn't defended anybody in his life. You hear reports lately of his "surprising athleticism" in workouts. (I believe that 99 percent of the time, when a player is described as "surprisingly athletic" or "surprisingly quick," he is, not surprisingly, white.) But I'm very skeptical.

What worries me, mostly, is that his defense is not what worries me. Most rookies aren't ready to defend NBA stars -- they were almost all scorers at every level before the NBA, or thought they were, and they rested on defense. No, my concern is that I don't think Fredette can be a big-time scorer in the NBA.

Compare him, for example, to Mike Miller. Miller was the No. 5 overall pick in 2000, which was a better pick than it sounds like, because 2000 was an awful draft. I mean, historically awful. I mean, it was so bad that late in the first round, the Clippers chose a power forward who had died in 1978 and the Spurs abstained, just to show how smart they were.

The top 10 picks were Kenyon Martin, Stromile Swift, Darius Miles, Marcus Fizer, Miller, DerMarr Johnson, Chris Mihm, Jamal Crawford, Joel Przybilla and Keyon Dooling. In that group, Miller looks like Magic Johnson.

Nonetheless, Miller is the guy who would scare me away from Fredette. This is why: Miller is a pure shooter, like Fredette. He was a pretty good athlete when he was drafted and is a good guy; there is nothing about Mike Miller that makes you hesitate. But he is five inches taller than Jimmer, and he is still only a secondary player on a contending team.

Can Jimmer Fredette really turn out better than Mike Miller? I'm skeptical. Maybe he has a better handle and is more driven to be great ... I'll concede on both counts. But I'd take Miller's career over Fredette's.

And that's why we need to get Jimmer to the right team. The highest I have seen him in mock drafts is No. 7 to Sacramento, which would be a disaster on several levels. He would presumably take Tyreke Evans's job at point guard, which probably tick off Evans; Evans isn't really a point guard, but neither is Fredette. Evans would move to shooting guard. If you think Evans and temperamental center DeMarcus Cousins would be happy with shot-happy Jimmer as their shooting guard, you're nuts. Plus the team might move, and Fredette would be saddled with two savior labels -- top 10 pick, and likable guy on an unlikable team. No. Please: No.

The two best options for him, by far: Miami and New York. Miami is not realistic. I understand that. The Heat don't even have a first-round pick. But imagine Jimmer on that team. He would get a ton of open threes because opponents would be preoccupied with LeBron James and Dwyane Wade. The Heat are a terrific perimeter defensive team that could cover up Jimmer's spotty defense. Wade and James can both be primary ballhandlers, so Fredette wouldn't need to be a real point guard.

Plus, the Heat would suddenly have a guy that everybody wants to succeed. Wouldn't that soften Miami's image a bit? Wouldn't it be just a little harder to root for their team bus to break down?

The Knicks are a real possibility. They pick 17th and are rumored to want to move up. (As a rule, the Knicks are always rumored to move up. The New York media lives on those rumors.) The Knicks make sense because Mike D'Antoni believes defense is something you beat, not something you play, and the hypercompetitive, quick-shooting Fredette would thrive in D'Antoni's seven-seconds-or-less system. Of course a Knicks team that relies on Amare' Stoudemire, Carmelo Anthony and Jimmer Fredette would lose a lot of 145-125 games, but this is not my concern.

We just need a landing spot for Jimmer -- one that gives him a chance at a Stephen Curry career, or at least a J.J. Redick career, instead of a Trajan Langdon career. I want to believe in Jimmer Fredette. This doesn't mean I do.

Squash Goggle Design and Buyers Tips

?Shopping for Safety?

?

Squash goggles are a form of eye protection that should be used throughout any squash game. The squash players at the top of the game can hit a ball at up to speeds as high as 125mph - something worth protecting against. The damage that can be inflicted by a squash ball travelling at such speeds is high and very serious. Fortunately, squash goggl have some great design features and functions to keep you safe during a game. There are lots of different choices on the market and a few things you might want to think about before buying.

?

Different squash goggles have different designs, for instance, some will tie around the back of the head for a secure fit, and others are held in place like a regular pair of glasses. It's important to remember that if you already wear prescription glasses, you can have squash gogles made specifically for your visionary needs. Squash gogles which don't impair your peripheral view of the court are essential, as creating a blind spot on the court counteracts the concept of safety. Whilst an element of style maybe something you look for in a purchase, safety is the most crucial aspect of squash goggles.

?

When deciding on what sqash goggles to buy, take a look and see if the lenses are shatter-proof, and also if they offer anti-fog properties. However, anti-fog sprays are available as a low cost alternative. You should ensure that the size of the squash goggle will fit comfortably on your head, it should be noted that there are junior sizes available for the younger sportsman. A great feature to think about for a pair of prospective squash goggle would be that the lenses are scratch resistant. Squash is a physical sport and there are times when your squash gogles are going to receive bumps and scratches. A sturdy pair of scratch resistant squash goggle will ensure they don't have to be regularly replaced and that your vision is not impaired whilst wearing your squash goggl.

?

Squash goggls should become an essential part of your squash equipment. They are an inexpensive solution to a serious injury risk. The squash goggls design is centred around safety in the game, while providing all the little innovations you need, such as anti-fog, comfort and scratch resistance. Take your time to look at all the different types and designs available and invest in the correct pair of squash goggles for your safety needs.

Loving Union With the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit [Video]

In you, O Lord, do I take refuge;
let me never be put to shame!
In your righteousness deliver me and rescue me;
incline your ear to me, and save me!

Be to me a rock of refuge,
to which I may continually come;
you have given the command to save me,
for you are my rock and my fortress.

Rescue me, O my God, from the hand of the wicked,
from the grasp of the unjust and cruel man.
For you, O Lord, are my hope,
my trust, O Lord, from my youth.
Upon you I have leaned from before my birth;
you are he who took me from my mother's womb.
My praise is continually of you.

I have been as a portent to many,
but you are my strong refuge.
My mouth is filled with your praise,
and with your glory all the day.
Do not cast me off in the time of old age;
forsake me not when my strength is spent.

For my enemies speak concerning me;
those who watch for my life consult together
and say, ?God has forsaken him;
pursue and seize him,
for there is none to deliver him.?

O God, be not far from me;
O my God, make haste to help me!
May my accusers be put to shame and consumed;
with scorn and disgrace may they be covered
who seek my hurt.

But I will hope continually
and will praise you yet more and more.
My mouth will tell of your righteous acts,
of your deeds of salvation all the day,
for their number is past my knowledge.

With the mighty deeds of the Lord God I will come;
I will remind them of your righteousness, yours alone.

O God, from my youth you have taught me,
and I still proclaim your wondrous deeds.

So even to old age and gray hairs,
O God, do not forsake me,
until I proclaim your might to another generation,
your power to all those to come.
Your righteousness, O God,
reaches the high heavens.
You who have done great things,
O God, who is like you?

You who have made me see many troubles and calamities
will revive me again;
from the depths of the earth
you will bring me up again.
You will increase my greatness
and comfort me again.

I will also praise you with the harp
for your faithfulness, O my God;
I will sing praises to you with the lyre,
O Holy One of Israel.
My lips will shout for joy,
when I sing praises to you;
my soul also, which you have redeemed.

And my tongue will talk of your righteous help all the day long,
for they have been put to shame and disappointed
who sought to do me hurt.

Major offensive possible in Sudan conflict: monitors (AFP)

KHARTOUM (AFP) ? Fresh satellite images show the army amassing heavy weaponry in the capital of Sudan's embattled northern oil state, suggesting that a major offensive could occur soon, monitors said on Saturday.

"New imagery from the Satellite Sentinel Project, or SSP, confirms that the Sudan Armed Forces (northern army -- SAF) control the town of Kadugli in Sudan's tense border region of South Kordofan, and that thousands of civilians have been displaced.

"The images support reports from the ground that SAF soldiers remain locked in a tense conflict with elements of the Sudan People?s Liberation Army (of the south -- SPLA) in South Kordofan.

"The images reveal that SAF's deployment of forces is consistent with UN documents indicating that a major SAF offensive could occur soon."

The US monitoring group, which was set up by Hollywood star and rights activist George Clooney last year, said the satellites images that were taken on June 17 were the first to show thousands of people seeking shelter around the main UN compound near Kadugli.

Heavy fighting has raged across South Kordofan since June 5 between the SAF and northern troops aligned to the army of the south that Khartoum has vowed to crush using all available means, including air strikes and heavy artillery.

World leaders including US President Barack Obama and UN chief Ban Ki-moon have called for an immediate ceasefire.

Sudanese church leaders and activists say the army's campaign forms part of a government policy of "ethnic cleansing", targeting South Kordofan's indigenous Nuba peoples who fought with the SPLA during the 1983-2005 civil war.

Khartoum strongly rejects those claims, insisting it is protecting civilians.

Eyewitnesses have described scenes of terror and carnage in Kadugli, with pro-government forces executing suspected sympathisers of the southern-aligned troops during house-to-house searches, and dead bodies lying in the streets.

The conflict has so far caused more than 60,000 people to flee their homes, according to UN estimates, including 30,000 children, amid ongoing fighting that the UN humanitarian office says has "seriously compromised" the delivery of emergency aid.

Holistic Diet ? a Complete Approach

Modern health practitioners are advocating a holistic approach to one?s health. One method that they use to achieve this goal is through a holistic diet. The goal of this diet program is two-fold: the wellness of the body and the balancing of the mind. That means, the focus is not just on the person?s body but also his emotional, mental and spiritual well-being. The medical practitioner will not only give instructions and exercises on how to lose weight but will also address the genetic factors, psychological and stress levels of the individual. A holistic diet gives more emphasis on the underlying reasons why a person is overweight. It aims to uncover the causes and design a program that will help in the resolution of the physical problem. Typically, 90% of weight reducers become overweight again. Advocates of holistic diets hope to turn around this statistic.

Rooftop Solar Power Could Meet Half of New York City?s Peak Energy Needs

nyc solar map.pngImage: nycsolarmap.com Solar power has been growing in New York City, but the installed capacity pales in comparison to the city's potential. That's at least according to a new study, illustrated by the map above, that found two-thirds of the city's million-plus rooftops are suitable for solar panels?and collectively could meet half the city's energy demand during peak hours, and 14 percent of the city's total annual use. (And that's accounting for typical weather conditions.)...Read the full story on TreeHugger

Malick's Tree of Life Gets Bigger

the-tree-of-life-image-slice

By now, it?s common knowledge that writer/director Terrence Malick takes his time in the editing room. It?s a minor miracle that any of his films get released at all. He literally spends years tinkering away at the footage he?s shot, shaping and forming and re-forming the film from the ground up. This past May, his latest film The Tree of Life was finally released. It was met with mixed, yet passionate, reception, as it?s been described as everything from a religious experience to pretentious to boring. Even directors David Fincher and Christopher Nolan have weighed in on the the film?s significance. Now it appears that Malick is currently working on a six-hour cut of the Brad Pitt-starred drama. Hit the jump to see what the auteur?s cinematographer had to say about this very extended director?s cut.

the_tree_of_life_movie_poster_01During a press conference overseas, the team behind Tree of Life (sans Malick) sat down to talk about the film with Les Cahiers du Cin?ma (via The Film Stage). Here?s the exchange between the interviewer and cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki:

Does Malick think about editing when he?s filming?

We speak about it almost everytime. But most of the ideas about the editing we share on the set don?t make the final cut.

We maybe have been shot 600.000 metres (around 370 miles) of film.

The first cut was 8 hours long. Terry is working on/preparing a 6 hours long version of the movie. What I?ve seen (of this) is absolutely incredible, it?s wonderful. The longer version will have to/will likely, for the most part, relate to the children part. There were outstanding things, we?ve shot many, many things about Jack?s childhood : his friends, his evolution, his changes, his awareness of the loss of his childhood. I don?t know if I?m supposed to say all of this!

While it?s no surprise that Malick?s first cut of the flick clocked in at 8 hours, it is a bit interesting that he?s revisiting the material to put together a super-extended cut. He?s definitely got his hands full at the moment, as he?s in post-production on a romantic drama starring Ben Affleck and Rachel McAdams that he shot towards the end of last year, and he?s also possibly prepping to shoot yet another film later this year. He?s also working on a documentary-type flick called Voyage of Time made up of footage that he shot during Tree of Life. All this from a guy who?s released just five films in the last 37 years.

There?s no word on when we?d be able to see this six-hour cut, or even if it?s going to be released. It could even be possible that Lubezki is actually talking about Voyage of Time, though that?s completely guesswork. Whatever the case may be, I think we would all be alright with a little more Terrenc Malick in the world.

What can I do to prevent arthritis ? ArticleComfort.com

Even if you don?t like to hear it, it doesn?t alter facts. One of the best ways of preventing both arthritis as well as gout is exercise.

You might wonder how exercise will stop arthritis, and actually if you talk to individuals who run a lot, they?ll recommend that you buy insanely costly treadmills that come with some high tech cushioning program that will cushion your footfalls, and prevent injury to your joints.

If this is the case, physical exercise puts more strain on the joints, so how will more strain help to reduce issues.

The logic is acceptable, the reality isn?t. For example, being overweight too puts a lot of strain on the joints, but being overweight will only increase your chances of developing arthritis and/or gout.

The distinction is that with physical exercise, the added stress will strengthen the joint. Most of our joints are held in place by muscles. This means that the joint will work properly only if its supporting structure is proper. For this reason exercise is essential, because as of now there?s no other way to strengthen muscles other than exercising them.

You will find other options as well, like cutting down on particular food, or adding something to the food, but as a good preventive measure there is nothing else that has come close to physical exercise when it comes to really working. Gout is not exactly the same as arthritis, but even gout can be prevented because exercising will ensure both that all our internal organs function correctly, and that the excess uric acid will be excreted with out allowing it to form crystals that result in the trademark inflammation and pain. Even when they?re genetically prone to have higher quantities of uric acid, exercising guarantees that it is all removed from the body.

Consuming, or not consuming particular food will certainly not help in any way. With science advancing almost every day, holding on to old info is not good simply because quite a few of these beliefs have been disproved convincingly. Opting for herbal supplements is a dicey game. While conventional medicine is really effective in treating certain illnesses, the issue is that because most of these goods are sold as supplements, they are untested.

Even when the producers say that since herbal supplements don?t have side effects it is completely safe, you?ve only his word for it that it does indeed have only herbal extracts.

Some products have already been banned from the marketplace simply because they have not declared all their ingredients, but this only after years of selling it to innocent individuals who had no idea that they had been taking some thing that could have potentially dangerous side effects.

Exercise on the other hand can?t have any side effects, and will in fact only make you more healthy. The glow your skin gets after a workout can?t be duplicated by any amount of costly creams, and the tone your muscles get also cannot be replicated. It?s a recognized preventive measure. It?s just your decision whether or not you need to follow it or not.

Democrats wrestle with how to end Weiner scandal (AP)

WASHINGTON ? With a defiant Rep. Anthony Weiner resisting calls from colleagues to quit and President Barack Obama saying he'd resign if he were in Weiner's shoes, House Democrats are wrestling with how to put the embarrassing online sex scandal behind them.

Democrats met behind closed doors Tuesday for the first time since the New York congressman admitted to sexually charged online relationships with several women and lying to hide his misdeeds. Frustration among Democrats is increasing as the scandal moves into its third week.

Democrats could try to oust the seven-term congressman from the House Democratic caucus or try to strip him of his committee assignment on the Energy and Commerce panel in hopes of persuading him to quit Congress.

Going into the meeting, Rep. Carolyn McCarthy, D-N.Y., told reporters, "Hopefully, we're hearing he might resign in a couple of days." She did not elaborate.

Obama's blunt words could help Democrats trying to oust Weiner.

"I can tell you that if it was me, I would resign," Obama told NBC's "Today" show.

In a rare foray into a congressman's ethical conduct, Obama said Weiner's actions were "highly inappropriate."

"I think he's embarrassed himself. He's acknowledged that. He's embarrassed his wife and his family. Ultimately, there's going to be a decision for him and his constituents. I can tell you that, if it was me, I would resign," the president said in an interview airing Tuesday.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., told reporters Monday, "I hope that the president having spoken and some leaders in Congress speaking out that Congressman Weiner will hear this and know that it's in his best interest for him to leave Congress."

The cascade of raunchy photos and other revelations about the 46-year-old married congressman has been a distraction for Democrats seeking an edge as they look ahead to the 2012 elections. Besides Pelosi, several other Democrats have called for Weiner to quit, including party chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz.

Congress returned to work Monday and the House quickly approved without objection a two-week leave of absence for Weiner. The congressman is said to be in treatment for an undisclosed disorder at an undisclosed location, but his spokeswoman has declined to provide information on his whereabouts.

Also on Monday the House Ethics Committee began a preliminary inquiry that could bloom into a full investigation if Weiner continues to ignore calls to resign.

Weiner's vow to seek treatment and to work to repair his tattered reputation did little to ease the furor.

Republicans suggested that Pelosi was not tough enough on Weiner. Michael Steel, a press aide to House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, said in an e-mail that Weiner's intention to seek a leave of absence "puts the focus" on Pelosi.

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Va., who has called for Weiner to resign, said if Weiner does not leave, Democrats should consider taking away his committee assignment.

Egypt's EFG Hermes 1Q net profits drop 93 pct (AP)

CAIRO ? Egypt-based regional investment giant EFG Hermes says its net profits plummeted 93 percent year-on-year in the first quarter, dragged down by unrest in the Arab world.

EFG said Wednesday that net profits fell to 36 million pounds ($6.1 million) for the period ending March 31 compared to net profits of 483.6 million pounds in the same period in 2010.

Also affecting the results was a one-time gain resulting from its sale of Lebanon's Bank Audi SAL in January 2010.

Revenues from its investment banking division dropped 84 percent, reaching 168.2 million pounds.

The uprisings in Tunisia and Egypt, and later in Yemen, Bahrain and Libya, have battered the investment climate in the Arab world.

EFG's shares were down almost 0.3 percent, to 21.97 pounds, on the Egyptian Exchange by about 2:15 p.m. local time.
