Team of female scientists develop sophisticated numerical model to study larval behavior, fill ecological gap

MIAMI The behavior of marine larvae is central to fully understanding and modeling the pelagic (open ocean) stage for many coastal organisms. For the first time, a numerical study conducted by the University of Miami (UM) incorporates horizontal larval fish navigation skills into realistic 3D flow fields, creating a powerful tool that spells out how larvae use environmental cues to find their way back to the reef after being out on the open ocean. The new model uses reliable larval swimming speeds and vertical migration, known life history traits and spawning time to create realistic scenarios that can be studied in detail.

In an article entitled: "Orientation behavior in fish larvae: A missing piece to Hjort's critical period hypothesis" that appears in the latest edition of the Journal of Theoretical Biology, scientists Erica Staaterman, Claire Paris* and Judith Helgers demonstrate that despite very low swimming speeds -- approximately a few centimeters per second -- orientation behavior during early stages is critical to bringing larvae back to the juvenile habitat. The research team shows that baby reef-fish must possess, as early as possible, the ability to sense cues radiating from the habitat that help them to navigate and survive the pelagic phase.

The team used Hjort's "critical period" hypothesis, which says that fish recruitment variability is driven by the fate of the earliest larval stages, and that food and "aberrant drift" are the main factors contributing to the survivorship during this early phase. According to this hypothesis, the proportion of survivors during this "critical" larval phase is carried over throughout the entire life history of the fish's population.

"Orientation during the "critical period" appears to have remarkable demographic consequences," said UM Applied Marine Physics Professor Paris. "Larvae need to orient themselves soon after hatching to increase their chance to find any reef or to come back to their home reef. This notion of 'larval homing behavior' is a new concept, but it makes sense when compared to other essential larval developmental traits such as first feeding and swimming. If early fish larvae can sense their way home, we were certainly missing an important component in current bio-physical models that would change predictions of marine population connectivity."

"Using this model we can add to Hjorts' hypothesis that 'behavior' is a main factor contributing to the survivorship of the larvae, as well," said Staaterman, a Ph.D. student at UM. "We have discovered that recruitment of reef-fish is linked to signals perceived by the pelagic larvae; if the signals disappear or weaken, larvae can get lost. Therefore, the health of the coral reef and its cues is not only critical to the adult reef-fishes, but it is also essential to the survivorship of their pelagic larvae."

This study also shows the importance of the health of the habitat, even in complex coastal circulation with eddies and counter-currents: The stronger the cue information radiating from the surrounding habitat, the higher the survival rate of the larvae.

The flexible numerical tool that was developed through this study will allow scientists to set up hypotheses about both the nature of the cues and the larval behavior of a wide variety of marine species. This knowledge will allow us to better understand the enigmatic ecological "black box" of the pelagic larval phase, and help communities to better manage marine resources.

"These kind of studies, where the paths of millions of fish larvae are simulated in a model ocean, are really only feasible with the newest generation of numerical models," said Helgers, a computer scientist who contributed to the model algorithm which is designed to answer questions on the interaction of larvae with ocean currents. "The model we have built is fast and reliable, which allows us to perform the complex computations required to track the larvae in a high resolution model ocean."

"The outcomes of this study should serve to re-focus research on basic understanding of what larvae are capable of sensing, how they use their capabilities in the pelagic environment, and finally on the sequential importance of navigational cues needed for survival," added Paris.

Time Warner and Verizon begin selling bundled packages just to annoy regulators

Time Warner and Verizon begin selling
Verizon's special relationship with the cable houses deepened yesterday as it started to sell bundled mobile and land-line packages with Time Warner Cable, like it does with Comcast. Residents in various parts of Ohio, Kansas City and Raleigh, North Carolina can sign up and receive a $200 prepaid debit card as a reward for their custom. However, the partnership is raising regulatory concerns about Big Red's business practices, with the Justice Department weighing up if they're anti-competitive. Worse still, the FCC has yet to ratify that $3.6 billion spectrum deal, meaning that both parties could still be off to the tailors to be fitted for a federal lawsuit.

Advice for starting a business in Durham | the Northeast Central ...

?By Brittney Jenkins
NCCU Staff Writer
the Durham VOICE

The gospel music and soul food may keep customers coming back to JC?s Kitchen on Main Street, but owner Phyllis Terry recognizes the role that having a solid business plan has played in the success of her restaurant.

At JC?s Kitchen at 706 E. Main St., like other small businesses, employees often wear many hats. Ms. Penny, a cook, sometimes steps in to be the cashier. (Staff photo by Brittney Jenkins)

Being an entrepreneur is not for everyone but people in Durham who are interested should know about certain requirements and seek advice from role models in the community.

The first piece of advice given to most trying to start is: write a solid business plan.

The Office of Economic and Workforce Development of Durham provides a Starting a Business Guide for people looking to jumpstart their ideas. The guide includes tips, references and information on starting a business in Durham.

The guide recommends that business plans be simple, concise, easy to read, and easy to follow.

?Writing a business plan is efficient for everyone because if you fail to plan, you plan to fail,? says Terry.

Durham?s guide includes an outline of information to put in a business plan. Some of the sections are: executive summary, background information, description of products or services, the market plan/industry analysis and financial plan.

Writing the business plan is only the start. After all, there still is financing, advertising, location and other critical points when starting a business like registering your business for an EIN, Employee Identification Number, also known as a federal tax identification number.

?I think the first step is having the vision written down, knowing the goal and purpose and who you are trying to reach,? added Terry.

Once the business plan is on paper and the vision, product and goal is clear, another step is figuring out how to finance the business.

Self Help,a non-profit organization in Durham located at 301 West Main St., provides business loans for non-profit and small businesses. Business loans are not the only services they offer but many local businesses have started with financing from Self Help.

Getting a loan for a business is not the only way to get funding for your business. Other options are starting it with the money in your pocket.

In an article on abcnews.go.com called ?Start Your Own Business for $100 or Less? by Tory Johnson, Johnson talked about her own journey on becoming an entrepreneur and the CEO of her company Women for Hire.

?I didn?t have a lot of money and I didn?t have much time. Because my household very much relied on my income, I had three months to launch the company and generate a profit. If the venture failed, I?d have to quickly get a traditional job, which of course I didn?t want to do,? said Johnson.

Johnson also talked about networking and utilizing free and local resources that are easy to access. She even says Facebook and Twitter are good ways to market a business.

Johnson?s final advice was simply, ?Just Do It.? Johnson said, ?If you can?t get out there and sell your product or service, you don?t have a business. It doesn?t matter how fabulous your offering, Your expertise or your website. If nobody will pay you for it, there?s no business.?

Buffett rule: Five questions about Obama's plan answered

Obama's argument centers around a long-term trend: the effective tax rate paid by the highest-earning Americans has fallen sharply ? much more so than for middle-income households. A chart released by the White House shows the average tax rate paid by the top 0.1 percent of earners falling from above 50 percent in 1960 to below 30 percent by 2010.

"If you make more than $1 million a year, you should pay at least the same percentage of your income in taxes as middle-class families do," Obama said in a White House appearance on April 11.

According to the White House's own figures, however, top earners?do pay at a higher rate than middle-income earners, despite the decline in their effective tax rate.?Families in the middle of the income range pay an average federal tax rate below 20 percent in the White House chart, which includes payroll taxes for Social Security and Medicare as well as the personal income tax.

But as Obama points out, the wealthy pay at rates that can vary wildly, depending on the kind of income they earn and the loopholes they may use. If income arrives as capital gains rather than as wages, for instance, the current law applies a low 15 percent tax rate. The 400 highest-income households paid just 18 percent of their incomes in federal taxes in 2008, down from about 30 percent in 1995, according to the White House analysis of government tax data.

Obama pressured Republicans by citing Ronald Reagan as another president who essentially endorsed the Buffett rule. In 1985, Reagan urged tax reform by citing the example of a business executive paying lower taxes than his secretary. However, the White House chart suggests that in practice, Reagan's 1986 tax reform resulted in lower taxes for the wealthy.

Currently, the top 1 percent of taxpayers earn about 17 percent of all "adjusted gross income" calculated by the Internal Revenue Service, and they pay about 37 percent of all income taxes, according to the Tax Foundation, a Washington research group.

Many people are beginning to seek jobs that they can perform from home to make extra cash. Some people are even converting to full time work-from-home-positions. Working from home can provide a fruitful alternative to outside work because of the cost of fuel and babysitting. Additionally, one who works from home can set his or her desired work hours. Therefore, a large number of business-minded people are performing tasks such as writing, marketing, web designing and completing paid online surveys for cash. No education or experience is required for online surveys, which makes them a very popular way of earning cash online.

About Surveys

A survey is a series of questions that a consumer answers. The type of questions in a survey depends on the product or service it involves. For example, a survey conducted by a movie company will ask the viewer about his or her movie preferences and such. A survey given by a toothpaste company will ask the consumer about his or her tooth brushing habits.

Companies conduct surveys to find out more about their customers. They analyze the material in the surveys to better their products and services. Without the opinions of the consumers, corporations would not have much information to go on. Therefore, companies are willing to pay consumers for voicing their opinions.

How to Start Taking Surveys

Getting started taking surveys is not complicated. The individual needs to make sure that he or she applies with a reputable website. There are hundreds of survey websites, but not all of them are legitimate. Some sites may be fraudulent or contain a large amount of spam. Additionally, a good survey site will not charge the member for access to surveys. The idea is to make money taking surveys. If a survey site charges a membership fee, then it is not looking out for the consumer?s best interest.

Survey Process

In most cases, the survey taker will have to take a pre-qualification survey to determine whether he or she is fit for a specific questionnaire. For example, the company may be looking for 35-year-old single mothers to take a survey about baby food. A 25-year-old man would not qualify for this particular survey.

After qualifying to take a survey, the individual moves on to the actual survey. Surveys can last from thirty seconds to one full hour. Pay rates vary depending on the company and the length of the questionnaire. Payment for surveys ranges from approximately $1-$20. Some surveys pay more than that and some pay less.

Payment for Paid Online Surveys

Most survey companies pay by PayPal. PayPal has become a very popular form of payment. It is an online payment process in which a person or company pays someone to his or her e-mail address. The individual can then access the funds by sending them to his or her bank account or using a PayPal debit card. PayPal is a very fast and convenient service.

The length of time it takes for a person to receive payment for taking a survey depends on many factors. The survey company may want to conduct verification before they make payment. Verification takes approximately one to three days. In rare cases, verification can take an entire month. That is why choosing the right company to work with makes a world of difference.

James Cameron to create sparks with fighting robots, Robogeddon coming to Discovery Channel
Fresh off his return from the briny deep, James Cameron is set to create a television show for the Discovery Channel called Robogeddon. Similar to BattleBots and Robot Wars, the program will feature a competitive death match of sorts, where robots tear each other to shreds in pursuit of being the last machine standing. In addition to Cameron's participation, the show will also feature the stamp of Mark Burnett -- famous for such reality television titles as Survivor, Shark Tank and The Voice. It's also said that Donald Hutson, the two-time Super Heavyweight Champion of BattleBots, will be among the show's competitors. No date is set for when we'll see the sparks fly, but if you want to get in on the ground floor, might we suggest hitting your local scrapyard?

I am a mother of eight wonderful children and two new granddaughters, who I am very proud of. I am also a bi-vocational ordained evangelical minister, and a Christian Counselor. I received my B.S. degree in 2004, studying primarily in the areas of Psychology, with minors in Religion and English. I received my Masters Degree in 2009 in Psychological Counseling with an emphasis in Christian Counseling. My ministry is geared toward victims of sexual and domestic violence, including victims of childhood sexual abuse, whether currently or in the past. Since I have personally experienced the healing hand of God in overcoming many of the life issues that Christians may face, I feel qualified and compelled to discuss them in a truthful and open manner, as God?s word tells us that ?We shall know the truth and the truth shall set us free.? God has brought me through such diverse tribulations as sexual, physical, and mental abuse, being a victim of a drunk driving accident, spousal pornography addiction, adultery, divorce, remarriage, a very brief, though unjust, incarceration, and having experienced multiple miscarriages and various other trials. I have been asked to leave two Southern Baptist Churches, due to my being a female, ordained as a minister, and fired from a SBC sponsored Christian School (mostly white) for speaking out against racial prejudice in the Family of God. Through God?s merciful forgiveness of my own sins and inadequacies and God?s grace given to me to forgive those who have been a stumbling block to me, I have overcome many of these adversities. God?s word tells us that ?All things work together for good to those who love the Lord and are called according to the purposes of God." Since I have this hope, I believe that God has blessed me with the ability to confront and relate these issues to the Christian community, and that I have been called to the homeland mission field of North America. I hope to be able to use my personal experiences as a ministry of God?s grace and in the comforting of the people of God with the truth of God's mercy. I claim II Corinthians 1: 3 & 4 as my calling, which states: ?Blessed be God, the Origin of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Origin of mercies, and the God of comfort; who comforts us in all our troubles, that we may be able to comfort those who are in trouble, by the comfort we ourselves have been given by God.? As I have received the gift of God?s healing, I hope to be able to bring the peace beyond understanding to others with the message of God?s mercy and grace. My love for the Sovereign Lord of my life, Jesus Christ, along with my passion for writing has drawn me to explore these commonly experienced crisis issues from the perspective of my own experience in the hope that I may bring an empathetic and compassionate insight to God?s people. The views expressed in my writings are strictly my own insights, acquired from personal experience and diligent study of the related topics and God?s word concerning them. Though I am an ordained minister, my views should not be considered authoritative. I believe that the Christian community?s ultimate authority is the guidance of the human heart by the Holy Spirit and the Word of God. KNOW ALL MEN BY THESE PRESENTS - - that Saint Luke Evangelical Christian Ministries accepts Kimberly Marie Hartfield having demonstrated by actions and by statement of faith a love for Our Lord Jesus Christ and His Word, into the world-wide ministry of Saint Luke Evangelical Christian Ministries. ON OATH I, Rev. Dr. David M. Ford, on behalf of this ministry and all its members, do hereby select, appoint, and anoint you, Kimberly Marie Hartfield, a legally ordained independent minister of Saint Luke Evangelical Christian Ministries, and authorize you to perform all standard Christian religious services including the rites of marriage and baptism, on this day, November 17, 2003. (AP) ? Cries of panic and fervent prayers rang out Wednesday as Indonesians rushed toward high ground after two strong earthquakes raised fears of a killer tsunami.

Alerts were raised as far away as Africa and Australia but this time the big waves didn't come.

In western Indonesia, distraught women ran into the streets clinging to crying children as back-to-back tsunami warnings revived memories of the 2004 disaster that claimed 230,000 lives in nearly a dozen countries. Others screamed "God is great" as they poured from their homes or searched frantically for family members.

"God! What have we done to deserve this?" one mother screamed as residents around her piled into cars and onto the backs of motorcycles. "What sins have we committed?"

Two deadly tsunamis in the last decade ? the most recent off Japan just one year ago ? have left the world much better prepared.

Sirens sounded along coastlines and warnings spread like wildfire by mobile phone text messaging. Though often chaotic, evacuations began immediately, with streets clogged with traffic, especially in Aceh province, where 170,000 people were killed in 2004.

Patients were wheeled out of hospitals, some still lying in their beds with drips attached to their arms. And at least one hotel guest was slightly injured when he jumped out of his window.

Countries all along the Indian Ocean ? from Australia and India to as far off as Africa ? received alerts from the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii saying they should prepare for the possibility of seismically charged waves.

Hour later the tsunami warnings were lifted, and damage from the tremors was minimal ? something experts attributed to the unique nature of the fault line.

The only wave to hit was less than 30 inches (80 centimeters) high, rolling to Indonesia's emptied coastline.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the first 8.6-magnitude quake was a shallow 14 miles (22 kilometers), striking in the sea 270 miles (435 kilometers) off Aceh's coast ? making it the sixth-largest temblor in the last half-century.

Just as the region was sighing relief, an 8.2-magnitude aftershock followed, again causing only slight damage.

Experts said that's because both tremors were what are known as "strike slip" quakes, where friction and shaking along the fault line occurs horizontally, creating more of a vibration in the water.

In contrast, mega-thrust quakes ? like the one that hit off Aceh in 2004 and off Japan just over a year ago ? cause the seabed to rise or drop vertically, displacing massive amounts of water and sending towering waves racing across the ocean at jetliner speeds.

Roger Musson, a seismologist at the British geological survey, said initially he'd been "fearing the worst."

"But as soon as I discovered what type of earthquake it was ... I felt a lot better."

The tremors were felt in neighboring Malaysia, where high-rise buildings shook, and Thailand, India, Singapore and Bangladesh.

Buildings and beaches emptied out, also in Sri Lanka and the Maldives.

But it was Aceh where the real chaos broke loose.

"I'm so scared, I don't want to lose my family again," cried Aisyah Husaini, whose parents and a son were killed in the 2004 tsunami. She clung to her two children in a mosque in the provincial capital, Banda Aceh, where hundreds of people sheltered.

Sitting nearby was 52-year-old Nasir Djamil, who said he and his family weren't taking any chances ? they planned to spend the night.

"For sure, this has reawakened all those horrible nightmares," he said. "But I do feel like we learned something, that we know much better now what to do."

The World Meteorological Organization agreed, saying communication systems set up after the 2004 tsunami appeared to have worked well.

"Our records indicate that all the national meteorological services in the countries at risk by this tsunami have received the warnings in under five minutes," said Maryam Golnaraghi, the head of WMO's disaster risk reduction program.

The alert was sent out by the U.S. National Weather Service, which operates a tsunami warning station in Hawaii, she said.

Indonesia, a sprawling archipelagic nation of 240 million people, straddles a series of fault lines that makes it prone to volcanic and seismic activity.

Aceh accounted for nearly three-quarters of those killed in the giant 9.1-magnitude quake and tsunami of Dec. 26, 2004.

Aftershocks from Wednesday's quake are likely to persist for weeks or months. Subsequent earthquakes can be as strong or stronger than the initial temblor, but they mostly weaken over time.

Survive EEOC crackdown on background checks, leave policies ...

The EEOC received a record 99,947 charges in the 2011 fiscal year?the most the agency has received in its 46-year history. That?s an increase of more than 30% from just five years ago.

Given this sharp increase in charge activity, now is a good time to review your personnel policies and practices to make sure you?re taking appropriate steps to help prevent potential dis?crimination claims.

In reviewing their policies and practices, employers may want to consider the following two EEOC enforcement trends: increased scrutiny of background checks and inflexible leave policies.

Background on background checks

Several high-profile acts of employee violence and other criminal activity over the past several years have caused many employers to increase their use of employee background checks.

Background checks are useful for several reasons. They can help weed out potentially violent job applicants and identify employees who might engage in other bad acts. They can also provide some measure of defense against negligent-hiring claims.

However, employers need to be cautious to ensure that their use of background checks does not inadvertently lead to discrimination claims.

The EEOC has long taken the position that policies and practices that exclude applicants on the basis of credit history or criminal background can have a disparate impact on minorities (thus violating Title VII of the Civil Rights Act) unless the policy or practice is job-related and consistent with business necessity.

The EEOC has recently increased its scrutiny of employers that use background checks as part of its Eradicating Racism and Colorism from Employment (E-RACE) initiative.

Background-check best practices

In light of this increased EEOC scrutiny, you should carefully review your background-check policies and practices.

In particular, make sure that when an applicant is excluded from employment as a result of the background check, you can articulate why the ex??clusion is job-related and consistent with business necessity.

In addition, ensure that your background-check practices comply with the Fair Credit Reporting Act and applicable state consumer reporting laws, which govern checks. Those laws impose several notice requirements on employers that conduct background checks.

Beware inflexible leave rules

Another focus of increased EEOC scrutiny is inflexible leave policies. The EEOC has recently brought several disability discrimination lawsuits against companies that have terminated employees who were unable to return to work at the end of a maximum leave period. That can be very expensive!

Two years ago, the EEOC settled a case with Sears for $6.2 million. In that case, the EEOC claimed Sears violated the ADA by having a policy of terminating employees who were out on workers? compensation leave for more than one year. Sears refused to consider accommodations that involved returning to work in a different capacity or offering brief extensions of leave. ?

Last year, the EEOC also settled a similar disability discrimination lawsuit against SuperValu Inc. for $3.2 million.

Those settlements are a stark re??minder that an inflexible leave policy (even a generous policy that provides 12 months of leave) can lead to violations of the ADA if employers do not consider available reasonable accommodations that would allow em??ployees to return to work. ?

Legal leave policies

In light of this enforcement trend, make sure you don?t seek to enforce black-and-white policies on the maximum length of medical leaves. Rather, you should engage disabled employees in an interactive process to find reasonable accommodations.

Make case-by-case determinations about whether an extension of a leave of absence is a reasonable accommodation. Similarly, consider other available reasonable accommodations that may allow disabled employees to return to work.
