My Secret Eden: Thierry - nice place for desserts

Thierry Chocolaterie Patisserie Cafe

1059 Alberni St, Vancouver

Thierry Chocolaterie Patisserie Cafe on Urbanspoon

Food: 3.5
Service: 3
Price: Fair +

There is always room for dessert, say the girl with the extra dessert stomach. That't me in a nutshell, I love desserts and always on the lookout for new places. So when I heard about?Theirry opened by the renown Cin Cin dessert chef Thierry Busset, I was more than willing to give it a try.

I leisurely strolled the streets of?down town?after attending a seminar on a Monday afternoon, thinking that the dessert shop should be pretty empty consider the time and day, but I was wrong. The place was pretty packed at around 3pm.

The decor was very nice with these water drop lamps and modern wooden cabinets and walls. The menu was simple, you can order dessert and macaroons first or go straight to the end for drink. Overall, we both love the look and feel of this place.
For our drinks, R got a Americano, which he thought was robust and very strong. I got the Elderflower/apple soda ($3.95). It was like drinking carbonated apple juice that is sweeter than usual.?
I ordered a Passion Fruit Mousse ($5.95). The flavor was intense and real. In fact the gel on top was really sour. The raspberry macaroons on the side were quite sweet, so if you take a bite of both mousse and macaroon, it was just a perfect combination.?
R chose the next dessert: Chocolate Succe Cake ($6.95)?consisting?layer of hazelnut meringue, chocolate mousse and 70% chocolate ganache. The dark chocolate shell on the outside was pretty hard, which contrasted with the smooth/soft ganache on the inside. The whole thing is a chocolate lover's heaven, so naturally R loved it more than me. I still prefer my fruity tasting dessert.

Of course I couldn't leave the place without buying some of their famous macaroons. Half a dozen costed me about $12.95. I brought it home to share it with everyone, but we were all fairly disappointed. It was as sweet as expected, but it lacked the?flavour?to match its vibrant?colour. Also it seems they used quite a lot of dye to get the?colour.?

Overall, I think Thierry do have quality desserts, but I would skip over their macaroons if you are not a fan of sweet stuff. If you need a place to meet up with a friend over coffee, then this place is perfect. :)

New research published in the Journal of Leukocyte Biology shows that the inflammatory protein interleukin-6 plays a pivotal role in the duration of acute pancreatitis in obese mice

Bethesda, MDScientists from the Universities of Illinois and California have found that the inflammatory protein interleukin-6 (IL-6) plays a pivotal role in the duration of acute pancreatitis in animal models with this condition. Their report, in the June 2012 issue of the Journal of Leukocyte Biology, describes experiments in lean and obese mice that identify the presence of high IL-6 as one of the reasons why the disease is more devastating in obese people.

"The study helps to understand why acute pancreatitis is more prolonged in obese subjects," said Giamila Fantuzzi, Ph.D., the senior researcher of this work, from the Department of Kinesiology and Nutrition at the University of Illinois at Chicago. "Our data indicate that IL-6 participates in prolonging inflammation in obese mice with acute pancreatitis, but also show that this inflammatory mediator is not the most important factor in determining the severity of the acute response."

To make this discovery, researchers used lean and obese mice that do and do not produce IL-6. They induced acute pancreatitis in all mice and studied them at different times of the disease. Both groups of the lean mice developed mild disease and then promptly recovered. Both sets of obese mice developed more severe disease at its onset. For the obese mice that did not produce IL-6, the course of the disease was much shorter than in the obese mice that did produce IL-6. It is also important to note that obesity leads to elevated levels of IL-6 and other inflammatory proteins.

"There is an increasing awareness that obesity and inflammation are connected," said John Wherry, Ph.D., Deputy Editor of the Journal of Leukocyte Biology. "Not only does this new report demonstrate an important set of interactions between obesity, pancreatitis, and inflammation, but it also identifies the inflammatory pathway, IL-6, which could represent an important new therapeutic target in these settings."

Barry Bonds Back With Giants? Former Slugger Wants Job, Refers To Himself As Convicted Felon

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Barry Bonds is publicly referring to himself as a convicted felon these days, and he's quick to point out that conviction was never for steroid use.

He appealed his obstruction of justice conviction from April 2011 on one count of giving an evasive answer to a 2003 grand jury investigating illegal steroids distribution.

"I went through the system. And that's what it is," Bond said Monday, attending the Diamondbacks-Giants while doing charity work through Big Brothers and Sisters of the Bay Area. "And that's what I got. I went through the system. I'm in an appeal process right now. I was never convicted of steroids."

The slugger said he met recently with Giants president and CEO Larry Baer about working for the club in some capacity, and Bonds has a personal services contract the Giants have said could go into effect once his legal proceedings were in the past.

When asked if he regrets any connection to the Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative, Bonds said: "Do I have any regrets? What happened happened. It's there. It is what it is. I live with it. I'm a convicted felon for obstruction of justice, and that's who I am. I live with it."

The 47-year-old home run king, looking especially lean at about 212 pounds from his new love for cycling, also spent a stint in the broadcast booth during San Francisco's 4-2 win.

"It's always a treat when he comes around," winning pitcher Barry Zito said. "I love Barry."

While Bonds will long be remembered for his surly nature and mighty swing, he acknowledges he brought on many of his issues himself. Still, dealing with all of the court dates and speculation of his alleged use of performance-enhancing drugs did take a toll.

"I gave my life and soul to that game. That's what's heartbreaking. That's the hard part of it," he said. "My (reputation) was kind of iffy anyway. I created that guy out there for entertainment only. Whether you hated me or liked me, you were there. And I only wanted you there. I just wanted you to see the show. That was it. All I ever wanted was for people to have a good time and enjoy it. It was fun to come out and people would boo or yay or whatever. They all showed up to see whatever would happen next and it motivated me to play hard."

It's unclear when Bonds might begin work with the Giants, though he doesn't figure the timing would work this season.

He said he would expect his job to be different from the varying roles of former Giants first baseman J.T. Snow.

"I think my role is a little higher than that," he said, laughing. "I love J.T. a lot, though."

Bonds said if struggling two-time NL Cy Young Award winner Tim Lincecum sought his advice, he'd provide it.

"If Lincecum wants the answers, I'll give them to him," Bonds said.

Manager Bruce Bochy said he would welcome Bonds' input if he takes a job with the club.

"We have a great hitter here who has really accomplished so much," Bochy said.

The seven-time NL MVP is busy rehabilitating from two surgeries over the past six weeks ? one for a disk injury in his lower back sustained while running and also a procedure on his hip and quadriceps area. He is scheduled to be examined by doctors Tuesday.

"I work out every day. That never changed," he said. "I'm going to die training. That's what I love to do more than anything in the world."

Bonds hasn't played since 2007 and sees no reason to formally retire just yet ? and insists his Hall of Fame chances are far from his mind.

"That's up to the writers to worry about that stuff. I'll be at home having a good time with my life and my kids. That'll take care of itself," he said. "I don't try to predict the future or analyze how other people are thinking or how it's going to turn out. I face my opponents as they come. It would be very sad if it didn't happen. That's why I don't need to comment on it. There's really no need."

He said the legal issues he has faced in recent years will always stay with him.

"It'll never go off your mind," he said. "You don't ever forget those things. You move on. I'll never forget it."

Science & the Public: Bat killer hits endangered grays

Federal scientists confirmed the fungal epidemic has struck a second species of endangered American bats

Web edition : 1:06 pm

The news on white-nose syndrome just keeps spiraling downward. The fungal infection, which first emerged six years ago, was reported May 29 in a seventh species of North American bats ? the largely cave-dwelling grays (Myotis grisecens). The latest victims were identified while hibernating this past winter in two Tennessee counties.

Biologists observed tell-tale threadlike fungal fibers on the faces, wings and tail membranes of several bats. None of the victims were dead. Preliminary cellular diagnosis of the disease was made from specimens?sent to?the University of Georgia, and later by white-nose specialists at the U.S. Geological Survey?s National Wildlife Health Center in Madison, Wisconsin.

To date, the disease has been documented in bats in 19 states and four Canadian provinces. Scientists say their best guess is that?at least 6 million American bats have succumbed to this pandemic.

Seven of the 45 species of U.S. bats are endangered with extinction. The gray bat was added to the Endangered Species list in 1976. The bats' primary range spans from Alabama northward into Missouri and Kentucky. A few outlier communities can be found in Florida, western Virginia, Illinois, Indiana and Oklahoma. An estimated 90 percent of the species ??hovering at around?1 million animals ? depend on only 8 caves for their hibernation.

White-nose infections have killed some endangered Indiana bats, which despite their name can be found throughout the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states. Added to the Endangered Species list in 1967, a 2009 census of the species pegged the national population of Indiana bats at fewer than 400,000 animals.

?[T]hat another federally endangered bat species, the gray bat, has been confirmed with white-nose syndrome is devastating for anyone who cares about bats and the benefits they provide to people,? U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Director Dan Ashe said in a prepared statement.

Pakistan court shuts plants, angers US investor

(AP) ? David Walters saw a business opportunity where few other foreign investors would dare to tread: Pakistan's power sector. He forecast profit by importing power stations, linking them to the national grid and selling the electricity to the energy-starved country.

But the former governor of Oklahoma didn't reckon on three things that would sour his multimillion dollar investments: the inability of the government to provide the fuel, a chronically unstable grid and, in the end, the country's activist Supreme Court.

Acting on a petition by lawmakers who alleged the businesses were little more than a scam, the court declared his company's plants and all other similar projects established in the country since 2006 illegal. Judges ordered criminal investigations into those involved, saying corruption marred the bidding process and the country didn't need any more power plants ? just better management of existing ones.

Supporters say the decision was a much needed move by the only institution in Pakistan willing or able to strike a blow against rampant government graft and incompetence. Others called it a political decision by an overreaching court that has killed off any hope of foreign investment.

"Every company that will consider making an investment in Pakistan will now have a lump in their throat," said Walters, who counts his own losses in the millions and is vowing to seek international arbitration.

The chaos has highlighted the chronic mismanagement of Pakistan's power sector, which is unable to produce enough electricity to meet demand. The country suffers rolling power cuts for up to 18 hours a day. The government charges consumers less for the power than it costs to produce, but it doesn't have enough money to subsidize the producers, trapping the sector in a debt cycle.

The outages have crippled the country's industrial base, particularly textile factories, and serve as a daily reminder of the state's inability to take care of its citizens. As air conditioners are switched on this summer, record power cuts are being forecast ? along with added social unrest in a country already creaking under assault from Islamist militants.

The government, which devotes most of its attention to political survival, has done nothing to address the causes of the energy crisis since it took power four years ago.

Back in 2006, the government of Pervez Musharraf pitched what it thought was a short-term solution to the problem ? granting small power plants contracts of between three and five years, while it worked on longer-term projects like hydroelectric power.

Walters saw an opportunity and teamed up with one of the country's wealthiest businessman, Iqbal Ahmed, to exploit the demand for power. Ahmed's family company is Pakistan's biggest producer of natural gas and was close to Musharraf.

President Asif Ali Zardari continued with the so called "rental power projects" when he took office. By April, Walters Power International or its local partner had contracts to run three stations and was aiming to build one of Pakistan's largest power generation portfolios.

Under the deals, the companies received multimillion dollar payments in advance. But in many cases the government failed to provide gas to run them. With the plants not producing and the frequency of power outages increasing nationwide, the deals that led to them came under scrutiny from the media, the opposition and anti-corruption agencies.

"The government knew there was no gas. Walters knew there was no gas," said Khwaja Mohammad Asif, one of two lawmakers who petitioned the Supreme Court asking it to investigate the projects. "There is overwhelming evidence that these were scams from the word go."

Walters denied any wrongdoing and said the contracts were vetted by seven government agencies before it was signed. He said he never had any reason to doubt the government would provide gas, and said the advance and guaranteed payments were standard in such power arrangements around the world.

One of his prize plants was in Naudero in Sindh province. The $70 million plant was inaugurated by Zardari, who touted it as part of the solution to the energy crisis. It was supposed to provide power to local towns and villages and for wells vital to agriculture in the area, but it ran only to a fraction of its capacity. Hours after the Supreme Court ruling, it was shut down. Walters now says he can't get permission to recover the machinery from the site.

He said the opposition and the court were trying to score political points.

"Calling it a scam is nothing but an effort to embarrass the government by two members of parliament who managed to get the Supreme Court on their side," said Walters.

It's a similar story with the other foreign investor to take up the offer. Turkish company Karkey Karadeniz Elektrik Uretim invested $350 million in hulking floating power barges that were moored off the port city of Karachi. They started operations in April last year, but they were supplied little or no gas. The Supreme Court ruling ordered the company to repay a $180 million advance it was paid by the government. In a statement, Karky said it had started arbitration proceedings against the government and that the court ruling contained several material and factual errors.

The Supreme Court investigated the projects under so-called "suo moto" provisions, which allows it to initiate cases based on the "public interest," instead of waiting for cases appealed from lower courts to land in its docket.

It has passed similar orders on the price of sugar and established commissions to recover written-off loans, areas of economics and policy that some say should rarely be its business.

Saleem Mandviwalla, the head of Pakistan's Investment Board, said he was bewildered by the latest court order.

"This will not only effect the power business, but every business," he said. "All it has done has created more problems for Pakistan."

A recent report by the International Commission of Jurists said that the court was using "suo moto" investigations excessively, and that "when they are inappropriately applied, they may upset the balance of power and interfere with the ordinary course of justice."

But in a country where even government supporters admit that it has done nothing to curb corruption or make policy, some say that the Supreme Court is their only hope.

"All in all, they shouldn't be looking at this stuff, but if you were going to kill any policy, this would probably be it," said Feisal Naqvi, a lawyer and blogger. "The rental power policy was asinine."

Businesses in general and e-commerce in particular are getting more and more pragmatic and hard-nosed. Even a single useless word spoken and single dime spent futile affect the whole business setup. So, startups and especially small scale businesses need to pay more attention on proper business plans and effective marketing strategies.

Marketing has shifted from mass marketing to digital marketing space and the expenses incurred on marketing have also decreased from 70% to 50%. But, most of the businesses are suffering from myopic and inefficient internet marketing plans. Adding fuel to the fire, most of the internet marketing companies are grinding their axes viciously and are responsible for not burning your pockets and earning bad name for your products and services. So, business owners especially engaged in e-commerce need to keep their eyes wide open and mind quickly responsive.

Look at the following questions.

  • Does your website not enjoy the expected flux of traffic?
  • Is your sales conversion rate unsatisfactory?
  • Does your website entice insignificant activity?
  • Are customers queries about your services through media such as telephone or emails are also next to nothingness?

If your answers to erstwhile poised questions are ?yes?, then you are running the risk of failure and you might be soon left alone empty-handed when the balloon goes up. Mostly in such cases, website design, user experience and web application development are the factors that keep customers from visiting your site and making business.

What earnings reports have revealed about ads

Here are highlights of recent quarterly earnings reports from selected Internet and media companies and what they say about the state of spending on advertising:

April 12: Google Inc. says its revenue, after subtracting ad commissions, totaled $8.14 billion in the first quarter. Analysts were expecting revenue of $8.09 billion on this basis. Google's revenue was helped by a 39 percent increase in "paid clicks," but the prices of its search-driven text ads continued to decline. The so-called "cost-per-click" for these ads declined 12 percent from the same time a year earlier.

April 16: Gannett Co. reports a 25 percent drop in first-quarter net income, as advertising in its newspapers continued to decline. Broadcasting revenue rose, helped by advertising related to autos, the Super Bowl and political campaigns.

April 17: Yahoo Inc. says that after subtracting commissions paid to its advertising partners, revenue was $1.08 billion in the first quarter, up slightly from last year. It marked the first time since the third quarter of 2008 that Yahoo's quarterly net revenue has increased from the previous year.

Omnicom Group Inc., which owns marketing agencies, says its domestic revenue climbed 4 percent in the latest quarter, while international revenue increased nearly 6 percent.

April 19: Microsoft Corp. says it reduced losses in its online services division, which includes the ad-supported Bing search engine. The division's operating loss was $479 million, compared with $776 million a year ago. The division had $707 million in revenue, up 6 percent from $667 million.

The New York Times Co. says print and digital advertising revenue declined amid what CEO Arthur Sulzberger Jr. called "the uneven U.S. economic environment and uncertain global conditions." Advertising revenue fell 8 percent to $237.9 million, from $258.9 million a year ago.

April 25: The McClatchy Co. reports a slightly larger net loss due to declining advertising revenue. Meanwhile, compensation and other costs at the nation's third-largest newspaper company fell while digital advertising increased.

April 26: The Interpublic Group of Companies Inc., one of the world's largest advertising agency conglomerates, says revenue rose 2 percent to $1.51 billion, beating the $1.49 billion expected by analysts.

Time Warner Cable Inc. says advertising revenue grew 7 percent to $211 million in the quarter.

Online games company Zynga Inc. says revenue from advertising more than doubled to $28.2 million, from $13 million a year earlier.

April 27: WPP Group PLC, another owner of ad agencies, says revenue grew 4 percent after excluding acquisitions and changes in currency exchange rates.

May 1: CBS Corp. says advertising revenue grew 5 percent to $2.4 billion.

May 2: Time Warner Inc. says advertising revenue at its cable TV networks grew 6 percent, or $64 million, on stronger rates and better timing of March Madness basketball games. Ad revenue at the Time Inc. magazine business fell 5 percent, or $19 million.

Comcast Corp. says its NBCUniversal cable TV networks saw a 6 percent increase in advertising revenue. It did not break out ad revenue figures for the NBC broadcast network and stations, but says revenue grew from higher ratings and from carrying the Super Bowl, which was on Fox last year. Ad revenue at Comcast's cable-distribution division grew 5 percent.

May 3: Viacom Inc., owner of MTV, Nickelodeon and Comedy Central, says domestic advertising revenue increased 1 percent, while worldwide ad revenue was flat at $1.07 billion.

May 4: The Washington Post Co. says print advertising at its namesake newspaper fell 17 percent to $53 million. The division's online revenue, primarily from the Post's website and Slate magazine, fell 7 percent to $24 million. That reflects an 11 percent decline in display online advertising revenue in the unit and a 1 percent decline in online classified ad revenue at the Post's website.

Clear Channel Outdoor Holdings Inc. says revenue was virtually flat at $651 million.

May 8: The Walt Disney Co. says ESPN ad sales rose 14 percent, or 6 percent when excluding the timing of events such as the Rose Bowl and the impact of the NBA lockout. Disney says ESPN got a boost from higher rates. At the ABC television operations, network ad revenue rose 6 percent, but ad revenue at the eight TV stations it owns fell 8 percent

Discovery Communications Inc., operator of channels such as Animal Planet, says ad revenue rose 16 percent to $453 million.

May 9: AOL Inc. says advertising revenue grew 5 percent to $330 million, helped by higher international display advertising sales and third-party network ads. Display ads are the Internet advertisements people commonly see on Web pages, as opposed to the search ads that Google Inc. is best known for. These are more profitable for AOL than the third-party ads, so they're a more closely watched metric.

Durbin to launch "open, transparent and nonpartisan search" to replace Fitzgerald

DURBIN STATEMENT ON CHOOSING THE NEXT US ATTORNEY FOR THE NORTHERN DISTRICT OF ILLINOIS [WASHINGTON, D.C.] ? U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) released the following statement regarding the process for choosing the next U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois: ?I?m committed to conducting an open, transparent and nonpartisan search for the next U.S. Attorney for the Northern District and, over the next few weeks, I will work with Senator Kirk to establish a formal search process to fill the vacancy left by Patrick Fitzgerald?s resignation. We will announce that process once it is established.? ?I?ve spoken to Attorney General Eric Holder and he assured me that, in consultation with Patrick Fitzgerald, he will name a strong and competent Acting U.S. Attorney to serve until an eventual nominee is confirmed by the Senate. I?m completely confident that the U.S. Attorney?s office will continue its important work during this transition process.? ?The Northern District of Illinois deserves a U.S. Attorney beholden only to the law of land. We will find a successor who will continue Patrick Fitzgerald?s good work.? Traditionally, the senior Senator of the President?s party, in consultation with the junior Senator, makes recommendations to the President for a nominee for the position of U.S. Attorney. In this case, Senator Durbin will submit recommendations to President Obama after consulting with Senator Kirk. The approval of both home state Senators is required for the Senate Judiciary Committee to take up and consider any U.S. Attorney nominee. On average, it takes between 2-4 months to confirm a U.S. Attorney once that nomination is sent to the Senate. -30-

Applying for a Patent: Save Money on a Patent Search Process

The most important thing is to do a thorough search. If during your investigation you find possible infringement or prior elements of your device or mechanism for which a patent has already been issued, be truthful. It may not be as bad as it looks, but be honest and be sure to get copies of these questionable issues. It is not for you to determine this at site value but for your legal counsel to make that determination prior to the initial writing of the patent. It may not be as bad as it looks, but just be sure to get the drawings and addendums attached. Actually, those areas of question may be used to your advantage, and in some cases, used to point out the important but subtle differences in working features between your new device and the old-style one.

Got this crazy twitch in my eye?

Dehydration can cause vitamin/mineral loss, and cause cramping in muscles and involuntary muscle twitching. Once you are noticeably thirsty, you are already medically past the mark of being technically dehydrated. Get a multivitamin with complex Vitamin B?s & vitamin K (sorry but it isn?t potassium, by the way, that causes twitching in the eyes). Also make sure you are drinking enough water based liquids, and especially more so if you live in a hot, humid climate or work outside in the sun. Alcohol also depletes your balances, so drink extra if you?ve been out partying?!! (RN of 28 years)

Obama Admin defends Warrentless Cell Phone Tracking with a straight face

special to Drug War Chronicle by investigative journalist Clarence Walker, cwalkerinvestigate@gmail.com In the wake of the US Supreme Court?s January decision in United States v. Jones, in which the high court forbade the warrantless use of GPS tracking devices to surveil people?s movements, law enforcement and the Obama administration are scrambling ? not to find ways to comply with the spirit of the ruling, but to find ways around it. Police in many states have switched tactics by obtaining mobile data to zero in on someone?s prior movement and by tracking them through their cell phones, usually without a warrant. Whenever a cell phone is used, it "pings" an electronic signal to the nearest cell phone tower, allowing law enforcement to use the cell phone to find or track people. And cell phones containing GPS devices, which are increasingly common, "ping" constantly. In April, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) released anextensive study of state, federal, and local law enforcement?s surveillance practices that illustrate how police track citizens through their cell phones. The findings were staggering. Warrantless cell phone tracking "has become a powerful and widely used surveillance tool for police officials, with hundreds of departments, large and small, often using it aggressively with little or no court oversight," the report found. After poring over 5,500 pages of records in responses from over 200 local law enforcement agencies, the ACLU researchers reported that "only a tiny minority" ? 10 agencies total ? had obtained a warrant before tracking someone through his or her cell phone. "What we have learned is disturbing," said ACLU staff attorney Catherine Crump, who helped file public information requests with some 385 law enforcement agencies. "The government should have to get a warrant before tracking a cell phone. Instead, what we found was that the cops track people with no supervision, or in some cases, mostly drug cases, the cop will go to court and only show that it would be relevant to an investigation, which is a lower standard." The ACLU is calling for law enforcement agencies to desist from using cell phone tracking without a warrant, and is calling on state and federal lawmakers to pass legislation requiring a warrant before police use location tracking in non-emergency situations. A bill to address the problem is pending in Congress. Senate Bill 1212, the Geolocation Privacy and Surveillance (GPS) Act, is sponsored in the Senate by Senators Ron Wyden (D-OR) and Mark Kirk (R-IL). Companion legislation in the House, House Resolution 2168, is sponsored by Reps. Jason Chaffetz (R-UT), Peter Welch (D-VT) and Jim Sensenbrenner (R-WI.). The bills would require law enforcement agents to obtain a warrant in order to access location information. Another Senate effort, Judiciary Committee chair Senator Patrick Leahy?s (D-VT) Electronic Communications Privacy Act Amendments Act, Senate Bill 2011, offers a partial repair of the problem. It includes a warrant requirement for real-time tracking, but not for historical location information. The Obama administration disagrees that any action is needed. At a State of the Mobile Net conference held in May, Justice Department Deputy Assistant Attorney Jason Weinstein argued, "[t]he need for such warrantless cell phone tracking is important so it won?t cripple the government and law enforcement." The administration?s lawyers insist that when a person turns on a cell phone, the information from the phone is transmitted through a third-party, such as the wireless carrier, and the user thus has no "expectation of privacy." Warrantless cell phone tracking "should be illegal," said Washington, DC, appellate attorney Stephan Leckar, who successfully represented DC nightclub owner Antoine Jones in the case cited above. In that case, the Supreme Court reversed Jones? conviction and sentence of life without parole in a cocaine trafficking case after they found substantial evidence that the FBI placed a GPS device on Jones vehicle for 28 days without a search warrant. When police monitored Jones vehicle without a warrant, the court said, "This violated his Fourth Amendment right against unreasonable search and seizure." According to Leckar, the "third-party" doctrine is a means for law enforcement to get around the Fourth Amendment. "As the law reads," he said, the ?third-party? doctrine doesn?t violate the Fourth Amendment. To change this, people will have to petition Congress to change that doctrine."

SugarHouse Casino Hit With Its First Fines ? CBS Philly

(Credit: G. Widman/GPTMC)

By Tony Romeo

HARRISBURG, Pa. (CBS) ? Philadelphia?s SugarHouse Casino has been hit with the first fines since it opened in September 2010.

The Gaming Control Board has hit SugarHouse with two fines totaling $80,000, $70,000 of which is for seven incidents of gaming involving youngsters from the ages of 17 to 20, which occurred between February of last year and March of this year.

Gaming board spokesman Doug Harbach says stopping underage gaming is a tough challenge for casinos.

?The casinos will card tens of thousands of individuals during the course of a year. And some underagers will find a way, though, to get through that system. We do fine the casino for that, because they made a mistake. But, at the same time, you?re going to have these individuals who are going to try to continually get in and gamble.?

SugarHouse was fined another ten grand for incidents involving two people who gambled even though they had placed themselves on the gaming board?s self-exclusion list.

Researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health have found evidence of a role for neighborhood immunity in determining risk of dengue infection. While it is established that immunity can be an important factor in the large-scale distribution of disease, this study demonstrates that local variation at spatial scales of just a few hundred meters can significantly alter the risk of infection, even in a highly mobile and dense urban population with significant immunity. The study is published in May 28 edition of the journal PNAS.

Dengue is a mosquito-borne disease that infects nearly 50 million people worldwide each year, resulting in more than 19,000 deaths. There are four serotypes of dengue virus (DENV1) circulating in Bangkok, Thailand, where the study was conducted. Infection with dengue provides lifelong immunity to the infecting serotype and there is evidence infection temporarily protects from infection by other serotypes. When susceptibility to other serotypes returns there is an increased risk for severe disease. For the study, the research team used the household location of 1,912 confirmed dengue cases in Bangkok that were admitted to a local children's hospital between 1995 and 2000. The available data enabled the researchers to pair dengue serotype infections with specific households.

Observations indicated that immunological memory of dengue serotypes occurs at the neighborhood level in this large urban setting. The researchers developed methods that have broad application to studying the spatiotemporal structure of disease risk where pathogen serotype or genetic information is known.

"We observe patterns of spatiotemporal dependence consistent with the expected impacts of lifelong and short-term immunity, and immune enhancement of disease at distances of under one kilometer," said Henrik Salje, lead author of the study and doctoral candidate in the Bloomberg School's Department of Epidemiology.

"By providing insight into the potential spatial scales that immunity in a population is correlated and distances over which the disease is dispersed, these findings can help us further understand how dengue is being maintained in endemic populations," said the study's senior author, Derek Cummings, PhD, assistant professor with the Bloomberg School's departments of Epidemiology and International Health.
