Cross-Section Bullets Are Beautiful for Something That Could Kill You

When it isn't being fired at or around you, ammunition can be kind of beautiful. We've already seen the striking beauty of exploding bullets trapped in plexiglass, but photographer Sabine Pearlman found a different, but equally awesome bullet-photography approach: cutting them in half.

Her photo series AMMO, conisists of shots of the innards of over 900 different types of ammunition, showing not only how carefully engineered and unique every different kind of bullet is, but also just how damn pretty they are up close.

Of course, there are more themes at play here than just "pretty bullets." The work's official description puts it this way:

Pearlman?s photographs blur our preconceptions by humanizing the tools of the shooter, showing us their simplicity and aesthetic balance, their serene arrangement of part. Yet, Pearlman?s work also acts to disarm the shooter. Cloven in two and isolated from their context, they are rendered harmless. The viewer is forced to contemplate them as abstractions. composed of shapes and angles, flecks of color and texture, devoid of use.

But even with all that said, I just can't get over how some of the explosive material looks a whole hell of a lot like Cocoa Pebbles.

You can catch more of Sabine's work over on her Facebook page, or check out her portfolio over at her website.

Scherzer remains unbeaten, improving to 12-0

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) ? Max Scherzer is getting as good at deflecting attention from his accomplishments as he is at shutting down opposing hitters.

The Detroit right-hander became the first pitcher to win 12 consecutive decisions to begin a season in 27 years on Friday night, riding a pair of home runs by Miguel Cabrera and a mammoth shot by Prince Fielder to beat the Tampa Bay Rays 6-3 and take over the major league lead in victories.

"It's really nice to be 12-0," said Scherzer, who allowed three runs, four hits, walked one and struck out nine in seven innings to become the first pitcher in Tigers history to win his first 12 decisions.

"I'm pitching well, but the reason I'm 12-0 is because of my offense," he added. "You got to see firsthand today the best player in the game hitting two home runs on three pitches and going 4 for 4. And Prince hits a bomb. It's the offense that set me up."

Scherzer became the first in the majors to begin a season with at least 12 straight victories since Roger Clemens did it on the way to starting 14-0 with the Boston Red Sox in 1986. He's 2-0 with a 2.57 ERA and 18 strikeouts in two wins over Tampa Bay this season.

"He's just good. He's got a little of that whiffle ball look from the side, where the ball is jumping all over the place," Rays manager Joe Maddon said. "Then he gets the velocity when he wants it. There's a reason why he's 12-0. He's very good."

It helps to have Cabrera in the middle of the lineup.

The 2012 AL MVP went 4 for 4 and drove in three runs, boosting his major league-leading batting average to .377 with 24 homers and 81 RBIs, also tops in the big leagues. He hit a two-run homer in the first inning off Alex Colome (1-1) to extend his hitting streak to a season-best 13 games, then added a solo shot off the rookie for a 3-0 lead in the fourth.

Cabrera also singled in the sixth, giving him three of Detroit's four hits off Colome. Fielder doubled in the fourth, tagged up and hustled to third base on Victor Martinez's fly ball to right and eventually scored on a wild pitch to make it 4-0 before the Rays gradually climbed back into the game.

Ben Zobrist and Wil Myers hit solo homers for Tampa Bay. Luke Scott's RBI double trimmed Scherzer's lead to 4-3 in the seventh.

"All I thought about is winning today. My personal record is more a reflection of the team," Scherzer said. "I don't get caught up in the win-loss record because it's kind of fluky. Yesterday Doug (Fister) goes seven innings, one run and gets a no-decision. I got six and (allow) three and get a win, so that's why it's a fluky stat."

Cabrera doubled off Kyle Farnsworth in the eighth for his fourth hit. Fielder gave the Detroit bullpen some breathing room when he followed with his first homer since June 4, a towering two-run shot off Cesar Ramos that struck one of the catwalks that support the roof at Tropicana Field.

The Rays estimated Cabrera's home runs traveled 388 and 432 feet. Fielder's drive, which bounced off the catwalk and rolled back toward the infield, was estimated at 414 feet.

Cabrera, who leads the majors in hits and RBIs and is second behind Baltimore's Chris Davis in home runs, was asked how far Fielder's homer might have gone if it hadn't hit something.

"Miami," Cabrera said. "It was very far. It was impressive."

Al Alburquerque and Drew Smyly worked a scoreless eighth for the Tigers. Joaquin Benoit finished a combined five-hitter, earning his fifth save.

Scherzer, who's fanned at least six in each of his 16 starts this season, retired 11 in a row before Zobrist's first-pitch drive to right with two outs in the fourth. The closest the Rays had come to getting a hit up until then was Evan Longoria's second-inning grounder over the mound that Omar Infante ran down behind second base before making an off-balance throw to first for the out.

Longoria was removed from the game following that inning. The Rays later announced he irritated plantar fasciitis in his right foot, which has bothered him for the past month.

Maddon said Longoria, who has 17 homers and 47 RBIs, will not play Saturday and is doubtful for Sunday.

"A little bit tender in the foot area. We have to wait for it to calm down (Saturday) to make a better evaluation," the Tampa Bay manager said. "Of course I'm concerned, but I don't know the level yet until I get more information."

Notes: Reigning AL Cy Young winner David Price will rejoin Tampa Bay's rotation Tuesday night at Houston. The left-hander went on the disabled list for the first time in his career May 16 with a strained left triceps. He made two minor league rehab starts with Class A Charlotte and said he felt good after a bullpen session Friday. The Rays have gone 21-20 while he's been on the DL. ... The Tigers recalled reliever Bruce Rondon from Triple-A Toledo. To make room on the roster, reliever Evan Reed was optioned to Toledo. Detroit manager Jim Leyland said Rondon was not "brought back as a closer." Instead, Benoit will get most save opportunities. ... Rays RHP Alex Cobb, who was struck in the right ear by a ball hit by Kansas City's Eric Hosmer on June 15, played catch during batting practice. ... Tigers RHP Anibal Sanchez (right shoulder strain) will make a 60-pitch rehab start Monday, probably for Class A Lakeland . . . Leyland plans to rest RF Torii Hunter on Saturday night ... Leyland, who will manage the AL All-Star team, said he will not use any pitcher who starts a game on the preceding Sunday.

Canada's Island Sports News, Stryker-Indigo Media and SONAHHR form strategic alliance

Canada's Island Sports News, Stryker-Indigo Media and SONAHHR form strategic alliance

Stryker-Indigo Media & Island Sports News: NEW YORK, VICTORIA (June 29, 2013) Stryker-Indigo Media Group in New York and Canada's Island Sports News (www.islandsportsnews.net) announced today they have formed a strategic alliance. Under the terms of the agreement all parties will work together in conjunction with Stryker-Indigo's Boxscore World Sportwire division (www.boxscorenews.com), and its partners the Society of North American Hockey Historians and Researchers (SONAHHR) (www.sonahhr.com) as well as its hockey organization, the Society of North American Historians and Researchers (SONAHR) (www.sonahrsports.com), for the purpose of competing against major Canadian sports networks and to expand sports reporting across Canada.

The media alliance is designed to reshape the Canadian sporting news landscape. The agreement allows Island Sports writers an opportunity to be featured internationally across Stryker-Indigo's Boxscore World Sportswire platforms. It also allows Island Sports the opportunity to access the works of Stryker-Indigo/Boxscore writers. At present, sixty-percent of Stryker-Indigo/Boxscore's writers are Canadian. According to Island Sports News CEO, Scott Harrigan, "What this agreement gives us is access to high quality Canadian sports writers, something that we believe is necessary to expand our Canadian sports reporting and our online national news presence." The strategic alliance also allows Island Sports advertisers access to an international platform, through Stryker-Indigo/Boxscore, in order to market and sell their products.

In addition, Island Sports News gains immediate access to the Society of North American Hockey Historians and Researchers hockey content archives, a collection featuring hundreds of Canadian-themed historic articles written by SONAHHR historians and journalists.

The partnering agreement between Island Sports News and Stryker-Indigo/Boxscore is yet the latest strategic move by the Stryker-Indigo Media Group in the past 12-months. The agreement is seen as part of a global strategy by the corporation to grow its list of international partners and to create a worldwide network of online sporting news, radio, video, and live streaming outlets designed to compete globally against much larger media companies and sporting platforms. It also allows the company an opportunity to continue to increase its brand and product recognition worldwide and to develop an international web structure of sports sites that can be accessed daily by millions of potential readers, consumers and advertisers.

At the same time, the alliance with Island Sports creates regional and national Canadian outlets for Stryker-Indigo/Boxscore World Sportswire writers and advertisers. As Stryker-Indigo Vice President, Darril Fosty, explains it, "We are assembling a world-wide sports news network to rival the biggest news organizations on the Internet. There are thousands of websites covering individual sports, few cover general sporting news. Boxscore, along with Island Sports, are two that cover general news and have established news structures and networks. We have a clear vision in terms of our marketing strategies and long term goals, with the number of writers and photographers already assembled within the two organizations, the combination is approaching numbers that only the very largest news outlets in the world can exceed."

This is the second partnership announcement between a Canadian sports media company, SONAHHR/SONAHHR, and Stryker-Indigo/Boxscore. Last September, the groups announced a partnering agreement with Rouge Radio Canada (www.rougeradio.com). Rouge Radio, headquartered in Edmonton, Alberta produces a weekly podcast covering the three major leagues of Canadian Football: Professional (CFL), University (CIS), and Junior (CJFL). Rouge also provides coverage of other amateur leagues across Canada through their online show created and produced by volunteers across the country of Canada.

Officials hope to introduce Canadian sports fans to the SONAHHR organizations and to make SONAHHR/SONAHR the leading hockey and sports historical societies in Canada. They also believe Canadians will be surprised at the quality of the writing and the heavy emphasis placed on Canadian history and will therefore be attracted to the organization, its preservation efforts, as well as its messaging.

China media warns Philippines of 'counterstrike' in South China Sea

BEIJING (Reuters) - China's state media warned on Saturday that a "counterstrike" against the Philippines was inevitable if it continues to provoke Beijing in the South China Sea, potentially Asia's biggest military troublespot.

The warning comes as ministers from both countries attend an Association of Southeast Asian Nations meeting in Brunei, starting Saturday, which hopes to reach a legally binding code of conduct to manage maritime conduct in disputed areas.

At stake are potentially massive offshore oil reserves. The seas also lie on shipping lanes and fishing grounds.

Both China and the Philippines have been locked in a decades-old territorial squabble over the South China Sea, with tensions flaring after the Philippines moved new soldiers and supplies last week to a disputed coral reef, prompting Beijing to condemn Manila's "illegal occupation".

The overseas edition of the People's Daily, the official newspaper of the Chinese Communist Party, said in a front-page commentary that the Philippines had committed "seven sins" in the South China Sea.

These include the "illegal occupation" of the Spratly Islands, inviting foreign capital to engage in oil and gas development in the disputed waters and promoting the "internationalization" of the waters, said the commentary.

The Philippines has called on the United States to act as a "patron", while ASEAN has become an "accomplice," said the commentary, which does not amount to official policy but can reflect the government's thinking.

"The Philippines, knowing that it's weak, believes that 'a crying child will have milk to drink'," the People's Daily said, accusing Manila of resorting to many "unscrupulous" tricks in the disputed waters.

Beijing's assertion of sovereignty over a vast stretch of the South China Sea has set it directly against Vietnam and the Philippines, while Brunei, Taiwan and Malaysia also lay claim to other parts of the sea.

The 10-member ASEAN hopes to reach a legally binding Code of Conduct to manage maritime conduct in disputed areas. For now a watered-down "Declaration of Conduct" is in place.

On Thursday, China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi warned that countries with territorial claims in the South China Sea that look for help from third parties will find their efforts "futile", adding that the path of confrontation would be "doomed".

Last week, China vowed to protect its sovereignty over the Second Thomas Shoal, known in China as the Ren'ai reef. The Philippines is accusing China of encroachment after three Chinese ships, including a naval frigate, converged just five nautical miles (nine km) from an old transport ship that Manila ran aground on a reef in 1999 to mark its territory.

Last year, China and the Philippines were locked in a tense two-month standoff at the Scarborough Shoal, which is only about 124 nautical miles off the Philippine coast. Chinese ships now control the shoal, often chasing away Filipino fishermen.

WHITE HOUSE NOTEBOOK: Obama to US media: 'Behave'

PRETORIA, South Africa (AP) ? One element of President Barack Obama's Africa policy is to encourage a free press, although he offered repeated reminders for U.S. reporters traveling with him on the continent to be on their best behavior.

"Americans, behave yourselves," he needled as a contingent of U.S. and South African media was pulled from a quick photo-op Saturday with President Jacob Zuma.

Obama spoke just before their news conference and may have been trying to suggest his press corps keep its questions tight.

Both U.S. and South African reporters asked multi-part questions. Obama didn't try to cut anyone off, but instead said the U.S. press corps must be happy the news conference was taking place in a wood-paneled chamber inside Pretoria's grand Union Buildings.

"This is much more elegant than the White House press room," Obama said, referring to the more cramped media quarters in the West Wing. "It's a big improvement."

He kept up the theme of a long-winded U.S. press at the start of his meeting with African Union Commission Chairwoman Dlamini-Zuma.

"I might take some questions, except earlier in the press conference you guys asked 4-in-1 questions," a grinning Obama teased.

At his earlier stop in Senegal, Obama apologized to host President Macky Sall on behalf the American media.

"Sometimes my press ? I notice yours just ask one question," Obama said. "We try to fit in three or four or five questions in there."

Minutes before that comment, Obama had praised democratic progress in Senegal, specifically mentioning "a strong press" as part of that movement. However, the first Senegalese reporter to be called on lobbed a softball, simply asking Sall to describe the visit and any new prospects it posed for Africa.

___

Zuma's dinner in honor of Obama's visit to Pretoria began with a moment of silence for ailing former President Nelson Mandela. Then came a longer, unintended and much more awkward silence.

Zuma came to the podium to deliver a toast but said his notes were not there. He asked the audience, "Just bear with me for a minute."

But the minute grew into 2 1/2, initially only broken by the sound of waiters popping champagne corks in preparation. Zuma cleared his throat and chuckled nervously in the quiet. "What is here are the remarks of President Barack Obama," Zuma said with an extended laugh from the audience

The seven-piece South African Navy Band decided to fill it by striking up "The Girl from Ipanema," and finally an aide delivered Zuma's remarks.

Obama took his turn at the podium and said his staff felt pretty good by the mix-up.

"This is not the first time that a president has come to the podium without notes that were supposed to be there," Obama said. "And they are gratefully relieved that does not only happen to them."

___

Questioned about foreign policy, Obama said more than the security issues that "take up a lot of my time," he gets great satisfaction from listening to regular people talk about building their businesses.

A priority is the war that's drawing to a close in Afghanistan, with U.S. combat troops scheduled to return home by the end of next year.

Another is keeping the U.S. public safe. "I can't deviate from that too much," Obama said before also mentioning the need to focus on turmoil across the Middle East.

But "as much as the security issues in my foreign policy take up a lot of my time, I get a lot more pleasure from listening to a small farmer say that she went from one hectare to 16 hectares and has doubled her income," Obama said. "That's a lot more satisfying and that's the future."

The president apparently was still feeling good after the stop in Senegal. On Friday, he toured an exhibit showcasing the Senegalese agricultural sector with a focus on nutrition and fortified foods and chatted up several of the farmers who were there. The programs get help from Feed the Future, a public-private partnership begun by Obama that he touted in Senegal, including to reporters aboard Air Force One.

___

Obama's trip has been quite a family affair.

He's traveling with his wife, Michelle, their daughters Malia and Sasha, his mother-in-law, Marian Robinson, and a niece, Leslie Robinson. Other relatives are with him in spirit.

He spoke Saturday about his late mother, anthropologist Stanley Ann Dunham, and what he said she always used to tell him.

"You can measure how well a country does by how well it treats its women," he said, quoting her.

On Thursday in Senegal, he quipped about how he had disappointed his maternal grandmother by becoming a politician, not a judge as she had hoped.

___

Obama was looking forward to visiting Robben Island for a special reason: the opportunity to take his daughters with him.

The tiny island off the coast of Cape Town is where many opponents of South Africa's former system of white-minority rule were sent to prison.

Mandela spent 18 of his 27 years behind bars on the island. He was elected president a few years after his release.

Obama has visited the island previously, but called it a "great privilege and a great honor" to be able to bring Malia, who turns 15 next Thursday, and Sasha, 12, to teach them the history of the island and South Africa and how those lessons apply to their own lives growing up in America. The family was scheduled to ride the ferry over on Sunday.

The Obama girls could have visited Robben Island in 2011 when they accompanied their mother on her visit to South Africa, but the trip was scrubbed at the last minute due to rough seas.

___

Michelle Obama says she definitely would take more risks if she could go back and relive her teenage years.

She avoided getting too specific, though, saying simply that she'd try more things and travel more.

"I wouldn't be as afraid as I was at that age to fail," she said in Johannesburg during a Google+ Hangout chat involving scores of young people in Africa and several cities across the U.S., including New York City, Los Angeles and Houston. Singer-songwriters John Legend and Victoria Justice also participated.

After some of the students seated on stage with the first lady were asked to name their dream jobs, the question was then put to her.

Mrs. Obama didn't identify her dream job, but said that back then she could never have envisioned participating in such a forum. She often has said she never saw herself becoming first lady, either, and used her example to try to inspire the audience. She told them to keep their dreams big and embrace failure.

"Don't take yourself out of the game before you even start, because there's no telling what life has in store for you," Mrs. Obama said.

Target cuts ties with Deen; drugmaker distances

NEW YORK (AP) ? Paula Deen's multimillion-dollar merchandise and media empire continues to unravel following revelations that she used racial slurs in the past.

Target Corp., Home Depot Inc. and diabetes drug maker Novo Nordisk on Thursday became the latest companies to distance themselves from the Southern celebrity chef.

Home Depot, which sold Paula Deen-branded cookware and kitchen products only online, said it pulled the merchandise off its website on Wednesday. And Target said that it will phase out its Paula Deen-branded cookware and other items in stores and on its website.

"Once the merchandise is sold out, we will not be replenishing inventory," said Molly Snyder, a Target spokeswoman.

Meanwhile, Novo Nordisk said it and Deen have "mutually agreed to suspend our patient education activities for now." Deen, who specializes in Southern comfort food, had been promoting the company's drug Victoza since last year when she announced she had Type 2 diabetes.

These are the latest blows dealt to Deen since comments she made in a court deposition became public. Last week, the Food Network said that it would not renew her contract. On Monday, pork producer Smithfield Foods dropped her as a spokeswoman. Then, on Wednesday, Wal-Mart Stores Inc., the world's biggest retailer, said it too was cutting ties with Deen following a tearful "Today" show interview in which she said she's not a racist.

On the same day, Caesars Entertainment announced that Paula Deen's name is being stripped from four buffet restaurants owned by the company. Caesars said that its decision to rebrand its restaurants in Joliet, Ill.; Tunica, Miss.; Cherokee, N.C.; and Elizabeth, Ind., was a mutual one with Deen.

The stakes are high for Deen, who Forbes magazine ranked as the fourth highest-earning celebrity chef last year, bringing in $17 million. She's behind Gordon Ramsay, Rachel Ray and Wolfgang Puck, according to Forbes.

Deen's empire, which spans from TV shows to furniture and cookware, generates total annual revenue of nearly $100 million, estimates Burt Flickinger III, president of retail consultancy Strategic Resource Group.

But Flickinger says that the controversy has cost her as much as half of that business. He also estimates that she could lose up to 80 percent by next year as suppliers extricate themselves from their agreements.

"The accelerating domino effect is commercially disastrous for Paula Deen's empire," he said.

It's a dramatic fall from a woman who overcame her humble Southern roots and personal hardships to build a merchandising and media empire.

Deen, who grew up in Albany, Ga., was grappling with a failed marriage, the death of her parents and a prolonged battle with agoraphobia when she started her home-based catering business called The Bag Lady in June 1989, according to her company website.

Then a mother of two teenage boys, Jamie and Bobby, and on the verge of homelessness, she used her last $200 to start the catering business. She describes the business as delivering "lunch-and-love-in-a-bag." Five years later, she opened her first restaurant called The Lady and Sons in Savannah, Ga. Her first cookbook, "The Lady and Sons Savannah Country Cookbook," came out in 1998.

Soon after, she had her first TV appearance on QVC. But it was when "Paula's Home Cooking," began airing on the Food Network in 2002 that she started to hit stardom, according to her site. Deen now has two shows airing on the Food Network: In addition to "Paula's Home Cooking," there's "Paula's Best Dishes," which made its debut in 2008.

Deen's empire has continued to grow over the years as her brand has blossomed.

In addition to her The Lady and Sons restaurant, Deen owns with her brother, Bubba, a seafood restaurant in Savannah called Uncle Bubba's Oyster House. Deen is the author of 14 cookbooks that have sold more than 8 million copies and her bimonthly magazine "Cooking with Paula Deen" has a circulation of nearly 1 million, according to her website. And Deen's product lines span from a full line of cookware to assorted food items to furniture.

Not every company Deen does business with has severed ties with the celebrity chef. Among other stores that sell her products, Kohl's Corp. declined to comment, while Macy's Inc. and Sears Holdings Corp. said they're evaluating the situation. QVC, meanwhile, said it's reviewing its deal with Deen.

And book-buyers are so far standing by Deen. As of Thursday afternoon, "Paula Deen's New Testament: 250 Recipes, All Lightened Up," remained No. 1 on Amazon.com. The book is scheduled for October. Another Deen book, "Paula Deen's Southern Cooking Bible," is now at No. 5, up from No. 13 earlier in the day. Several other Deen books were out of stock.

Samsung Galaxy S4 Active review: a top-tier phone in a water-resistant package

DNP Samsung Galaxy S4 Active review a toptier phone in a waterresistant package

After Samsung's latest product push in London, we have nothing short of a Galaxy S 4 franchise on our hands. While the company unveiled its expected Mini version along with a photography-focused variant, it also took a step in the rugged-device direction by announcing the Galaxy S4 Active. With IP67 water and dust protection, the phone promises to see you through 30 minutes of aquatic activity at a time. Ruggedness aside, though, this device is quite similar to the GS4, albeit in a slightly heftier -- and arguably more attractive -- package. We spent some quality time with Galaxy S4 Active on AT&T, which retails for the same $199.99 as the original S 4. So is this a better pick? You know where to find out.

Insightera raises $6.5M to compete in red-hot digital marketing ...

The triple crown of marketing is getting the right content to the right person at the right time.

Insightera has raised $6.5 million to help marketers achieve this goal. The startup provides a business-to-business marketing platform that personalizes content in real time. It collects data on a visitor?s industry, location, and digital behavior, and automatically presents targeted, customized content. The goal is to boost conversion rates and accelerate customer acquisition.

CEO Mickey Alon told VentureBeat that most of the sales process happens before actual contact is made. Before meeting with a company, most people will check out its website for background information. This is a chance to make a strong first impression.

?Prospects make initial decisions, educating themselves and learning about your offerings from your website, while still comparing you to the competition,? Alon said. ?The best marketing is done when it?s most relevant. The control is moving to the buyer?s side and this requires a new playbook for marketers.?

Insightera applies data analytics and machine learning to automate the personalization process. It integrates with any CMS and requires no coding. Businesses gain greater insight into potential clients that are visiting their site and the platform helps them make the most of the opportunities.

Advancements in the areas of big data and machine learning have made it possible for businesses to ramp up their marketing efforts using technology, which leads to better sales and improved returns-on-investments. Accordingly, marketing automation is a hot space right now. Digital marketing firm ExactTarget was just acquired by Salesforce for $2.5 billion, and Oracle bought cloud marketing company Eloqua for $871 million in December 2012. Marketing automation company Marketo went public in May and raised $79 million. ?

Insightera?s biggest competitor Demandbase recently closed $15 million to push for growth. It works with large companies such as Adobe, HP, Dell, and Informatica. Insightera?s customers include smaller names like Hortonworks, Landa, Prophix, Cellbrite, Powtoon, and LiveU. Lightspeed Venture Partners and Opus Capital led this Series A round, which will support customer acquisition and product development.

Insightera is headquartered in San Mateo with a team in Israel. It has 25 employees.

Gay rights clash: Obama, African host are at odds

DAKAR, Senegal (AP) ? Laying bare a clash of cultures, President Barack Obama on Thursday urged African leaders to extend equal rights to gays and lesbians but was bluntly rebuked by Senegal's president, who said his country "still isn't ready" to decriminalize homosexuality.

Obama opened his weeklong trip to Africa one day after the U.S. Supreme Court expanded federal benefits for married gay couples. In his first in-person comments on the ruling, Obama said the court's decision marked a "proud day for America." He pressed for similar recognition for gays in Africa, wading into a sensitive area in a region where dozens of countries outlaw homosexuality and a few punish violations with death.

"When it comes to how the state treats people, how the law treats people, I believe that everybody has to be treated equally," Obama said during a news conference with Senegalese President Macky Sall at the grand presidential palace in Dakar.

But Sall gave no ground. Senegal is "very tolerant," he assured Obama, but is "still not ready to decriminalize homosexuality." Sall said countries make decisions on complex issues in their own time, noting that Senegal has outlawed capital punishment while other countries have not ? a pointed jab at the U.S., where the death penalty is legal in many states.

Obama's trip, which also includes stops in South Africa and Tanzania, marks the most extensive visit to Africa by the first black U.S. president since he took office. Many Africans have expressed disappointment over Obama's lack of direct engagement with affairs on their continent ? particularly given that his father was Kenyan and he has many relatives living in Africa ? yet he was still enthusiastically welcomed.

Thousands of people gathered on the roadways near the presidential palace as Obama's motorcade sped through the coastal city, many in the crowds wearing white to symbolize peace. Some waved homemade signs welcoming Obama, while those gathered near the palace entrance sang and played drums, the rhythmic beats audible from inside the gates.

At Goree Island, the former slave trading post Obama visited later Thursday, local residents waited under scorching sun for hours to catch a glimpse of the president. They sang a song about his return to his ancestral homeland and broke into jubilant cheers as Obama and first lady Michelle Obama walked over to shake hands.

Looming over the festive atmosphere were concerns over former South African leader Nelson Mandela. Obama is due to arrive in South Africa on Friday, though Mandela's precarious condition adds some uncertainty to the agenda.

Obama spoke reverently about the impact that Mandela's struggle against apartheid had on his own activism, as well as about the 94-year-old's influence in Africa and around the world.

"If and when he passes from this place, one thing I think we'll all know is that his legacy is one that will linger on throughout the ages," said Obama, who has sometimes been linked to Mandela given their shared status as their nations' first black presidents.

Mandela's democratic influence in Africa is at the core of Obama's trip. The three countries he will visit were selected as a signal of U.S. support for African nations that have embraced democracy in a region where the legacy of corruption and authoritarianism have been difficult to overcome.

Sall, for example, won the presidency in Senegal last year by ousting an incumbent president who attempted to change the constitution to make it easier for him to be re-elected and for his son to succeed him.

Africa's democratic movements have not been accompanied in most places by equal rights for gays and lesbians. A report Monday by Amnesty International said 38 African countries criminalize homosexuality. In four of those ? Mauritania, northern Nigeria, southern Somalia and Sudan ? the punishment is death.

Discrimination against gays is the norm. In Uganda, evictions of homosexuals by landlords occur regularly, says the Amnesty report. Vigilante groups in several countries have posted the names of homosexuals online or denounced them on the radio, forcing them to go into hiding to avoid mob violence. In Senegal, suspected homosexuals who were buried in Muslim cemeteries were disinterred in several towns and villages, and their corpses were dragged through the streets.

On another subject, Obama was pressed in his news conference about the status of former government contractor Edward Snowden, who has acknowledged leaking highly classified documents detailing sweeping U.S. government surveillance programs. The Chinese government let Snowden leave Hong Kong, where he had been hiding, to travel to Russia, where he is now believed to be holed up in the transit zone at Moscow's airport.

Obama dismissed the notion of deploying U.S. military resources to detain Snowden, saying "I'm not going to be scrambling jets to get a 29-year-old hacker."

On still another topic, the president had harsh words for the Supreme Court on its ruling this week that overturned key elements of the Voting Rights Act. Obama declared the decision "a mistake."

"I might not be here as president had it not been for those who courageously helped to pass the Voting Rights Act," Obama said.

The president is being accompanied throughout his trip by wife, daughters Malia and Sasha, and mother-in-law Marian Robinson. Following the president's meetings with Sall, the family boarded a ferry bound for Goree Island, which by some accounts was the center of the Atlantic slave trade.

The Obamas were given a tour of the salmon-colored House of Slaves where Africans were held before being sold into slavery. The president then peered out into the vast Atlantic through the Door of No Return, where shackled men, women and children left Africa, inching across a plank to the hull of a waiting ship.

"Obviously, for an African-American, an African-American president, to be able to visit this site, I think, gives me even greater motivation in terms of human rights around the world," Obama said after his tour.

The president's stop on Goree Island was the first of two visits on the trip highlighting racial change in Africa. The second is scheduled for Sunday at South Africa's Robben Island, where Mandela spent 18 of his 27 years in prison.

NoteSuite for iPad: Meet Evernote's New, Subscription-Free Competition

NoteSuite for iPad: Meet Evernote's New, Subscription-Free Competition After finding success with note-taking/to-do app Projectbook last year, Theory.io has decided to overhaul their signature productivity app and take it a step further. Now, hoping to go head-to-head with big dogs like Evernote, the developers are officially re-releasing the app as NoteSuite?the potential answer to all your disorganized digital life woes.

What does it do?

Just like its first incarnation, NoteSuite still you take notes and make to-do lists, but that's only a very small portion of the new beast. You can also annotate essentially any type of content (web pages, articles, PDFs, etc.), clip web pages, record audio, and search through various file types as one. Your data will sync across your various devices (which would be limited to Macs and iPads at this point).

Why do we like it?

One of the biggest differences between this and Evernote is that you're not going to have to pay any sort of subscription fee, and you still get virtually all the perks. And the annotation function on the app is fantastic. Nothing is safe from your highlighting, annotating, signing, typing fingers?you can write and draw on practically any document by converting it to a PDF. The fact that search can work across files that haven't been converted or organized is another huge bonus. And if you were already a ProjectBook user, you can nab the update totally free. Of course, the fact that there's no iPhone version yet is a pretty big mark in the "con" column?but the app is young, hopefully a more mobile-friendly edition is soon to come.

The Best: No subscription fee

The Worst: No iPhone version

Microsoft Adds Auto Scaling To Windows Azure

4578.WindowsAzureLogoAt its Build developer conference today, Microsoft announced that it is adding auto scaling for web apps to its Azure cloud-computing platform. This will allow developers to dynamically scale their cloud server capacity on Azure automatically as needed. Users can, of course, set a maximum and minimum number of servers to run at any given time. Enabling this feature just takes a few clicks in the Azure management console, and in addition to setting the number of servers to use, developers can also set a target CPU load for every one of these servers. Once a web app needs more CPU capacity — or if the storage queue gets too long — it can then spin up a new server. Besides making apps more responsive, one of the main reasons to use auto scaling is, of course, to save money. There is, after all, no reason to pay for servers that aren’t actually being used. Azure will give users a general idea of how much they can save when they turn this feature on for their accounts. Autoscale for Windows Azure is in preview now and will be available for free for a limited time. It’s worth noting that Amazon Web Services has long offered auto scaling for its EC2 cloud computing platform, too, so Microsoft, which was relatively late to cloud computing, is mostly playing catch-up here.

Try To Resist the Urge to Set This 2000-Log Pyre Ablaze

Building a tower out of Lincoln Logs is one thing. Building a real life, 30-foot high funeral pyre out of actual firewood is a little bit more complicated. With a bit of finesse and a lot of patience, artist Tadashi Kawamata managed to pull off the latter. No smoking in the vicinity, please.

Built as a temporary installation for the Swiss Kunstmuseum Thurgau, the tower?named Scheiterturm or Funeral Tower?is made of over 2,000 carefully stacked pieces of firewood. Each stick was laid by hand, and it took a crew of indentured servants students to lay it all down precisely. It's a feat of engineering.

Kawamat's tower isn't permanent though; it's life is set to end after three years. Unfortunately it won't be burned like the pyre it is, but the bits and pieces that are left will actually be sold as firewood. But until then, is anyone up for a game of Jenga? [Designboom]

Bombing in southern Pakistan kills 2

QUETTA, Pakistan (AP) ? A senior police official says a bomb has killed at least two people in a village in an area of southern Pakistan frequently hit by violence.

Fayyaz Sunmbol, the deputy inspector general of police in Quetta, says the blast Thursday morning in the village of Kuchlak also wounded five people.

The village is about 22 kilometers (13 miles) from Quetta, which is the capital of Baluchistan province.

Sunmbol says authorities are investigating whether it was a roadside bomb or a suicide bomber.

Baluchistan has been beset by violence from multiple groups. Baluch separatists often attack Pakistani military and government targets while Sunni Muslim extremist groups have repeatedly killed Shiite Muslims living in the region.

Many members of the Afghan Taliban also make their base in the province.

96% Stories We Tell

All Critics (78) | Top Critics (35) | Fresh (75) | Rotten (3)

Everyone has a different story. I found myself holding my breath listening to them talk. The story twists like a thriller.

Stories We Tell is not just very moving; it is an exploration of truth and fiction that will stay with you long after repeated viewings.

Part of the movie's pleasure is how comfortable the "storytellers" are with their director; you get a sense of a complicated but tight-knit family, going along with Sarah's project because they love her.

Never sentimental, never cold and never completely sure of anything, Polley comes across as a woman caught in wonder.

After you see it, you'll be practically exploding with questions - and with awe.

The films greatest achievement is in how deeply mesmerising one woman's story can be, regardless of whether she's famous or not.

Honestly, it's one of the best things you'll see this year.

Polley's fearless personal journey is a huge achievement, a genuine revelation - but the less detail you know beforehand, the better. Go in cold, come out warmed.

Sarah Polley is often referred to in Canada as a 'national treasure'. She's far more than that. She's a treasure to the world - period. And so, finally, is her film.

An absorbing exercise not only in documentary excavation but in narrative construction.

Sarah Polley's exploration of her tangled family history is a complex and thoroughly fascinating inquiry into the nature of truth and memory -- and, inevitably, into Polley herself.

This is simply a gorgeously realised and warmly compiled family album, which lingers with us not because its subjects are so unusual and alien, but because they feel so close to home. What a success.

Sarah Polley's personal "documentary" suffers from one additional emotional beat too many. Otherwise, it's mesmerizing.

Polley interviews her family and acquaintances with remarkable candor and intimacy, perhaps as a method of catharsis, but it never feels like a vanity project or a simple airing of dirty laundry.

The great conceit of Polley's theories of perspective and truth is that she, as director, ultimately controlled everyone's memories because she arranged them on film.

As with her other films, when Sarah Polley takes it upon herself to tell us a story, you can bet it's a tale well-told and one that you'll want to hear.

What Stories We Tell does so brilliantly is both tell the story and tell about how we tell our stories. The truth may not be out there.

This is a warm, brave and thought-provoking piece of autobiography.

Stories We Tell shows us that the truth and the way its told are two very different things. Polley's wonderful documentary honors both by preferring neither.
