Egypt says clock ticking on sit-in standoff

CAIRO (AP) ? Egypt's highest security body warned Sunday that the clock is ticking for a peaceful end to the standoff over sit-ins by supporters of ousted President Mohammed Morsi, suggesting that authorities will break up the protests unless mediation efforts produce results soon.

More than a month after the military overthrew Morsi, thousands of the Islamist leader's supporters remain camped out in two main crossroads in Cairo demanding his reinstatement. Egypt's military-backed interim leadership has issued a string of warnings for them to disperse or security forces will move in, setting the stage for a potential showdown.

Also Sunday, authorities announced that a court case accusing the spiritual leader of the Muslim Brotherhood and his powerful deputy of inciting violence will start Aug. 25. Morsi hails from the Brotherhood.

A top U.S. official visiting Cairo urged all sides to find a peaceful resolution to the standoff to avoid a repeat of violence that has killed more than 250 people ? at least 130 of whom pro-Morsi protesters shot dead by security forces ? since the July 3 military coup.

While diplomats raced to find a compromise, the Egyptian interim government signaled that its patience with the pro-Morsi sit-ins was running out.

The National Defense Council, which is led by the interim president and includes top Cabinet ministers, said the timeframe for any negotiated resolution should be "defined and limited." The council also said any negotiated resolution would not shield from legal proceedings what it called "law-breakers" and others who incite against the state.

The group called on the protesters to abandon the sit-ins and join the political road map announced the day of Morsi's ouster.

With the Islamist-backed constitution adopted last year suspended and the legislature dominated by Morsi's supporters dissolved, the road map provides for a new or an amended constitution to be put to a national referendum later this year and presidential and parliamentary elections early in 2014.

In a move that underlined the government's resolve in dealing with the protests ? now in their second month ? Egyptian authorities denied Yemen's Nobel Peace Prize winner Tawakkul Karman entry into Egypt after she landed at Cairo airport on Sunday.

Karman, the first Arab woman to win the Nobel Peace prize, has stated her opposition to Egypt's military coup and said she had intended to join the pro-Morsi sit-in protests. She won the prize for her role in protests in Yemen in 2011 that forced longtime dictator Ali Abdullah Saleh from office.

Airport officials did not say why she was denied entry, only that her name had been placed by various security agencies on an airport stop list. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief the media.

The decision to bar Karman suggests authorities wanted to deny the pro-Morsi camp the publicity she would have generated. Morsi supporters strongly condemned Karman's barring, claiming it was evidence of the "resurrection" of the police state under autocrat Hosni Mubarak, toppled in a 2011 popular uprising.

Meanwhile, U.S. Deputy Secretary of State William Burns extended his visit to Cairo by two days so he could have further talks with Egyptian leaders on Sunday and Monday. He met Defense Minister Gen. Abdel-Fatah el-Sissi, who led the coup, and the country's prime minister on Sunday.

The State Department said Burns discussed the importance of avoiding violence and fostering an inclusive process "that helps Egypt's ongoing transition succeed" ? another clear sign Washington has moved on from Morsi's presidency.

Burns also met for a second time this weekend with an anti-coup delegation that included two Muslim Brotherhood figures. He requested the meetings and urged them to avoid violence, said Nevine Malak, who attended both meetings with Burns as part of the anti-coup delegation.

Malak described Burns' position in the meetings as "neutral" and said delegates told him that the government needs to foster trust for national unity talks to take place. She said this includes reigning in the use of force against pro-Morsi protesters, improving prison conditions for top Islamist political figures detained and ceasing arrests of Islamists, she said.

"The current climate does not build confidence nor lay the groundwork for talks or real reconciliation," Malak told The Associated Press. The delegation insisted that any solutions must be based on the Islamist-drafted constitution, she said.

Other top diplomats in Cairo are the foreign ministers of the United Arab Emirates, which had been at odds with Morsi's government, and Qatar, which maintains close ties to the Brotherhood. European Union special envoy Bernardino Leon was also in Cairo attending the meetings with Burns.

The UAE's diplomat met with Egypt's president and vice president, but Qatar's foreign minister had not held any meetings with government officials by late Sunday, presidency officials said. Burns met separately with the two Arab Gulf ministers while in Cairo, an Egyptian official said.

At the core of discussions is the political future of the Muslim Brotherhood and its Islamist allies.

Morsi has been held at undisclosed locations since July 3. He faces accusations of comprising with the militant Palestinian Hamas group to escape prison in 2011.

Egypt's state news agency said on Sunday that Brotherhood leader Mohammed Badie and his deputy Khairat el-Shater are to stand trial Aug. 25 for complicity and incitement in the killing of eight demonstrators outside the group's Cairo headquarters.

Badie is at still large, while el-Shater is in custody.

The killings took place during the first day of the mass street protests calling for Morsi's ouster. The agency also said that senior Brotherhood figure Rashad Bayoumi will face trial on the same charges. Three others face murder charges in the same case.

Morsi's palace aides Rifaah el-Tahtawi and Asaad el-Sheikha meanwhile faced questions over allegations they illegally held and tortured anti-Morsi protesters. Both aides are in detention.

Ike hoop star to college coach

His playing days behind him.

But, just tipping off another chapter in his exciting roundball career.

All everything star out of Eisenhower High, hooping on nothing but, high notes in his b-ball days at Central Washington University. Two years ago helping to lead a 26 - 4 Wildcats team to a regular season league championship and tournament title. An outstanding point guard, and as every coach who Drew's ever played for will tell you, so intelligent on the court.....and off. A conference academic all star, .....Central thrilled to name Drew its new assistant basketball coach.

Drew Harris "For a very long time I wanted to do coaching and make it a career. All my coaches I've had in the past thought I'd be a great coach. That was a little more motivation to push through it. Stick with it. Make it a career. So, like one or two seasons here, and, then you're off to be a head coach. We'll see."

It'll be a while for the one time star from Ike....that's Drew...number 31 back in his outstanding Cadet days. so court savvy...but, still so much to learn under CWU head coach Greg Sparling as Drew has absorbed from so many tutors before including former Ike Coach Pat Fitterer.

Drew Harris "Man, old school Remember that stuff? Ya, that was a while back. Seem like a long time ago? Ya. Haven't seen that footage for a long time."

Already a wildcat player's favorite...new assistant coach Drew Harris is in Las Vegas this week recruiting, which he told me he loves.....selling the University to potential student-athletes with his own personal resume of success in the gym and in the classroom.

Drew Harris "I really do like Central Washington University a lot. Not just basketball, but, the whole school, the campus. The community of Ellensburg been great to me. So, I plan on being there a while.

Obamacare = 198% Increase in Georgia Health Insurance Rates

A recent trend in the naming of legislation is to include the purported benefits in the title, hence, the ?Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act??aka Obamacare. Unfortunately, experience has shown that many legislation titles tend to be diametrically opposed to reality, as in the ?paperwork reduction act.?

Consequently, it came as no surprise that Ralph Hudgens, Georgia?s Insurance Commissioner, has asked for a 30-day delay in approving plans submitted by seven insurance companies. In his request to Kathleen Sebelius, Secretary of the US Department of Health and Human Services, Hudgens stated, ?In complete contradiction to every promise made by the President with regard to the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (?PPACA?), insurance companies in Georgia have filed rate plans increasing health insurance rates up to 198 percent for some individuals.

Georgia consumers cannot afford these massive rate increases. For their protection, I am requesting that you grant an emergency 30 day delay of the July 30, 2013 deadline for our department to approve these increases. In addition, I am requesting that your Department show cause why these massive requested rate increases ate not justified under PPACA. I am asking that you answer this emergency request by close of business, July 30, 2013.?

Georgia Senate President Pro Tem David Shafer also voiced concerns about the Obamacare-instigated rate increases. ?Notwithstanding the President?s many assurances to the contrary, I have always suspected that Obamacare would lead to higher health insurance rates,? Shafer said. ?But the rate increases pending before the Georgia Insurance Department are absolutely staggering in magnitude.?

Shafer isn?t a Johnny-come-lately to health insurance issues. Previously, he served as Deputy State Insurance Commissioner and Vice Chair of the Senate Insurance and Labor Committee.

According to ACA proponents (mostly Democrats), Hudgens and Shafer are wrong about the legislation creating massive increases in premium costs. As proof, they cite a Washington Post headline: ?Maryland issues insurance rates that are among the lowest in the U.S.? What the headline fails to address is the fact that in spite of the comparatively lower rates (compared to other states) health insurance premiums in Maryland would increase up to 25%, compared to 2013 rates.

That increase was noted in a Baltimore Sun article, which stated: ?Marylanders who buy health insurance on a state exchange under health reform could see their premiums jump as much as 25 percent under rates approved by state regulators, but those increases are less than insurers sought.

Maryland Insurance Commissioner Therese M. Goldsmith approved premium increases Friday for nine insurance companies who applied to sell plans to individuals through a state exchange, called Maryland Health Connection, established under health reform.

The rates were significantly lower than what insurance companies had requested, but still higher than the 6 percent to 7 percent annual premium increase that is typical across the country. Insurers said they were seeking the increases to cover the uncertainty of new costs associated with health care reform.?

(Maryland having one of the lowest insurance rates in the nation is a perfect example of ?The Doctrine of Associated Irrelevance? in action. For more information about the doctrine, click here.)

When you cut to the chase, you find that claimed health insurance premium rates aren?t necessarily what individuals will pay. Federal tax subsidies will help offset costs for some individuals. Maryland officials estimate that approximately 75% of the people buying health insurance through the state exchange will receive ?federal assistance? in one form or another. If you?re confused as to the source of the dollars used for ?federal assistance?, consult your income tax return, or (if your stomach is naturally strong) the current national debt.

In a number of states, insurance premiums are claimed to be significantly lower than predicted by the Congressional Budget Office, which raises questions regarding the massive increases noted by Georgia?s Insurance Commissioner. Without question, actuarial assessments, state regulations, and enrollment levels vary from state to state and influence ultimate rates. That influence has obviously not been beneficial to residents of Georgia.

The Cleveland DUI Checkpoint Facebook Page is Pretty Popular

Posted by Vince Grzegorek on Sat, Aug 3, 2013 at 10:45 AM

If you're looking for a one-stop shop for alerts about DUI checkpoints being run in and around Cleveland, join over 15,000 of your closest friends over at the Cleveland DUI Checkpoint Facebook Page, which has amassed that healthy total of followers in just about two weeks.

Save the outrage about the page and general alerts about where cops will be camped out looking for drunk drivers for another outlet. This isn't about assisting tipsy travelers in avoiding the law ? though, there's certainly some who use public notices of checkpoints for just that purpose. As the Facebook page's admin notes:

We believe that knowledge breeds responsibility. If people are reminded of the existence of Checkpoints, they are far more likely to call a cab or designate a driver. Indeed, it's far safer for the person who has been drinking to never get behind the wheel of a car because they know about the many Checkpoints out there, than to drive drunk for miles, endangering lives & causing the types of accidents your discussing of the way to a DWI checkpoint. Indeed, MADD has studied this issue & determined that the deterrent effect of social media warnings exceed the value of the Checkpoints themselves, reducing alcohol related injuries & deaths by 20%

Stay safe out there.

Cars banned as Rome moves to protect Coliseum - World News

Claudio Lavanga, NBC News

Pedestrians swarm around the Coliseum in Rome Saturday after cars were banned from part of the Via dei Fori Imperiali.

By Claudio Lavanga, Correspondent, NBC News

ROME -- The Coliseum in Rome was arguably the most beautiful traffic circle in the world. For decades, thousands of cars and vespas zipped around the ancient amphitheater every day. But from Saturday, all that is history.

Exhaust fumes slowly blackened the amphitheater?s once shiny marble, and experts worried the tremors caused by traffic could threaten the fragile monument.?

Part of Via dei Fori Imperiali -- the spectacular cobblestone avenue that leads to the Coliseum -- was closed to traffic apart from public transport Saturday and turned into the ?most stunningly beautiful boulevard in the world.?

Romans and tourists will finally be able stand in front of the most famous symbol of ancient Rome without fearing they will be run over by impatient motorists -- though some nearby roads are still open.

?Visitors will walk where Julius and Augustus Caesar walked, in the shadows of the Campidoglio Hill and magnificent Coliseum,? Ignazio Marino, the newly elected mayor of Rome, said. ?In this location of truly stunning beauty, once more we witness history in the making.?

In a way, Marino has made history of his own.

The pedestrianization of Via dei Fori Imperiali and the Coliseum has been a talking point for decades, but the idea never took off due to the absence of alternative routes for the 1,200 motorists an hour that used it during peak times.

However, Marino turned his election pledge into reality just seven weeks after he took office in June.

?The project came about and has developed thanks to the participation of the men and women of Rome, as a measure which shall enhance quality of life and kindle a new-found love of the city,? Marino boasts on the official project website.

But not all ?men and women of Rome? think the pedestrianization will ?enhance the quality? of their life.

Hundreds people who live on or around roads that will take the bulk of the diverted traffic oppose the project and blame Marino for throwing them to the lions.

On nearby Via Merulana, an avenue already plagued by heavy traffic, smog and noise pollution, locals shook their heads at the sight of police reducing parking spaces to make room for the expected increase in traffic.

A hundred yards away, city council workers drew an extra lane, turning the already bustling road into a kind of inner-city highway.

Fearful that the fast-moving traffic, lack of parking spaces and the general ensuing chaos would drive clients away, angry shopkeepers and others formed a pressure group to stop, or at least modify, the project.

?This can only end badly for us,? Michele de Angelis, a local newsagent, said. ?With fast-moving traffic, nobody is going to be able to stop by, even to buy a newspaper. And traffic will be so bad soon people will simply decide to avoid the area.?

Despite the residents? fears, Marino plans to press on. He plans to kick out the mobile food carts, illegal vendors and costume-clad wannabe gladiators who turned the amphitheater into a tourist trap.

And next, he dreams of closing down surrounding areas to traffic, including the bustling Piazza Venezia.

Marino also hopes to get money from the European Union to start digging in around the forum to turn it into the ?biggest archeological area in the world.?

He may have been mayor of Rome for only seven weeks, but some see a hint of the emperors of old in his ambition and drive.

Google to bring 'find my device' feature to Android

OK, Google: Where the heck did I leave my phone?

On Friday Google announced that it will offer a new service to help users keep track of their Android devices from afar. The service, called Android Device Manager, is similar to the "Find My iPhone" service outed by Apple in 2011, and enables Android phone and tablet owners to remotely find and manage their lost devices. Users will be able to view the current location of their devices on a map; lock their devices remotely; or, if they think a device has been stolen, activate a noisy alarm in order to ward off thieves, or erase all memory on their device.

All of this can be done by logging into the Android Device Manager website on any laptop, desktop or other mobile device.

Google?s Benjamin Poiesz, an Android product manager, explained the purpose of Android Device Manager in a post at the official Android blog:

Android Device Manager can help you keep your data from ending up in the wrong hands. If your phone can?t be recovered, or has been stolen, you can quickly and securely erase all of the data on your device.

The feature will become available later this month and will be able to track all devices running Android 2.2 or newer; a companion app will also be available for download in the Google Play Store. You can read more about the Android Device Manager on the Google blog right here.

'Horror Story' has 'a lot of humor' this season

    TV

    Image: American Horror Story panel

Frederick M. Brown / Getty Images

From left, executive producer Tim Minear and stars Jessica Lange, Sarah Paulson, Kathy Bates and Angela Bassett at the TCA press tour.

"American Horror Story: Coven" won?t feature Uncle Arthur or Aunt Clara when it returns to FX in October. However, the supernatural-themed series (set to focus on mothers and daughters and witches that migrate from Salem to New Orleans) will be a bit lighter in its tone than season one's "Murder House" and season two's "Asylum."

?It?s definitely a drama,? Sarah Paulson, a returning cast member, shared with TV critics at the summer TCA press tour Friday. ?But there?s a certain lightness to the show. Last season, we couldn?t even sit in the asylum set for very long. We wanted to go back to our trailers and nobody ever does that. These sets (for ?Coven?) are beautiful. I?m walking around my character?s kitchen saying, ?I wish I had this cutting board.? ?

Paulson?s set to play Jessica Lange?s daughter, Cordelia, in "Coven." Lange will portray a witch named Fiona.

"There is a lot of humor and we are embracing a kind of velocity and fun with the series," previewed executive producer Tim Minear.

Though the usually dark drama may be lighter in tone this year, the screams aren't going away.

?You won?t feel like the walls are closing in on you, but you will get scared,? said Minnear.

"Coven" features a female-heavy cast, including Oscar-winner Kathy Bates ("Misery") and Oscar-nominee Angela Bassett ("What?s Love Got To Do With It"), who are playing real-life characters Delphine LaLaurie, a Louisiana socialite/serial killer, and Marie Laveau, a practitioner of voodoo.

?This is a character that?s very different from Harry,? said Bates, the former "Harry?s Law" star, or her murderous character. ?And I?m thrilled to be able to play it!?

?There are some voodoo-ians who?ve offered to show me a few things,? said Bassett.

Lange and Paulson aren?t the only cast members from previous seasons set to return.?

?Evan Peters is back and he will be involved with at least one of the witches in our coven,? said Minear, who added that Peters won?t be playing characters similar to those he portrayed in "Murder House" and "Asylum," but rather ?something new.??

While Paulson?s character has a husband, Minear said that the cast is mostly women.

?All of these women (Lange, Paulson, Bates and Bassett) are playing iconic characters,? said Minear. ?Not all of them are witches, but some of them are. This cast is off-the-hook amazing.??

Sure, FX can be a ?boy?s network,? Minear mused, but ?we have a ?Murders? Row? of actresses, who are very friendly ? friendly until we start doing what we do!??

Verizon offers 500MB 'Share Everything' plan

Verizon offers 500MB 'Share Everything' plan

Verizon has quietly introduced a new 500MB tier to its "Share Everything" plan. The new price structure undercuts Verizon's previous low-end offering - 1GB per month for $50. It helps the company compete with rival AT&T, which offers a 300MB per month for $30, reports Engadget.

Of course, $40 isn't what you pay; Verizon charges you another $40 per smartphone, so you'll be paying $80 per month bare minimum ($120 assuming you actually share with another smartphone user). AT&T similarly tacks on a $40 per smartphone charge. 500MB isn't a pretty small data cap, too: you'll need to remind yourself to hop on wi-fi hotspots at every opportunity (or just not use a data unless you really need it).

But if your wallet is thin, it may be a palatable alternative than doing without altogether.

Facebook Tries to Salvage Home With a Haircut

Facebook Home, the social network's much-hyped but little-used uber-skin for Android phones, is getting a haircut in the hopes that people will be more willing to try out a pared-down version.

Facebook introduced Home in April as a pre-loaded feature on the HTC First, as well as making it available for download on HTC's One, One X, and One X+, as well as Google's Nexus 4 and Samsung's Galaxy S III, Galaxy S4, and Galaxy Note II.

But few people wound up buying the HTC First and it turns out that not too many folks loaded Home on the other Android smartphones for which it was available, either. Shortly after its release, consumer sentiment about Home was notably underwhelming and now Facebook has all but admitted that the software package was a failure.

Facebook has stripped down the full, interface-encompassing Home package to just one element, the Cover Feed utility that provides a mobile-friendly take on the site's News Feed and sits on top of a phone's lock screen.

In speaking with CNET, a Facebook spokesperson did not admit that Home was a dud, but indicated that the company had reason to believe that Cover Feed has a better chance of being adopted as a standalone app.

"Cover Feed has been a popular element of the Home experience, and making it available from the Facebook Android app makes it accessible for more people," the tech site quoted the spokesperson as saying.

The new app, which became available this week, isn't limited to the select phones that can run the full Facebook Home package. Installing Cover Feed over your lock screen is now an option in the standard Facebook mobile app for Android.

It's not clear what the deal breaker was for so many Android phone owners with regards to the full Facebook Home package. Many have pointed to Facebook's customized, much-maligned Android app launcher as the culprit. Chat Heads, a messaging app included in Home, hasn't been panned as widely but clearly not too many people are using it, either.

And this isn't the first time Facebook has tinkered with Home in an attempt to make it more palatable. Last month, the social network rolled out an update for Facebook Home that now lets you drag apps into folders for a more organized and personalized Home screen.

Facebook's mobile strategy has taken some interesting twists and turns in recent months. On the one hand, the social networking giant has had a good deal more success in reaching users on their mobile devices than many predicted ahead of Facebook's IPO last May. But monetization of all that mobile traffic remains a bone of contention for some investors. And attempts to market a full-blown "Facebook phone," whether through a multi-featured software package like Home or by including a special Facebook button on a handset, have repeatedly fallen flat with consumers.

ASIA MARKETS: Asian Shares Mostly Rise; Weaker Yen Boosts Japan

    By Mia Lamar

Asian stocks traded broadly higher Friday, paced by a record-setting session on Wall Street.

Investors in Asia were inspired by Thursday's rally in U.S. stocks, which pushed the S&P 500 index (SPX) over the 1,700 mark for the first time and the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJI) to its own record high. Attention now turns to the closely-watched monthly U.S. jobs report, slated for release later Friday.

U.S. data has taken on heightened significance as investors prepare for any indication that the Federal Reserve will start winding down its $85-billion-a-month bond buying program. Economists polled by Dow Jones expect July nonfarm payrolls to increase by a median 175,000 compared with 195,000 added in June. The July unemployment rate is forecast to edge down to 7.5% from 7.6% in June.

"Numbers along those lines would probably keep the Fed on track for tapering at the September meeting, with one more employment report scheduled before then," said Jim O'Sullivan, chief U.S. economist for High Frequency Economics. The firm expects a 190,000 increase in payrolls.

Australia's S&P/ASX 200 closed 1.1% higher at 5116.80, its highest level since late May. Heavily-weighted bank shares bounced back from Thursday's losses after a report on possible new bank taxes was revised, easing some profit concerns. Westpac Banking Corp. (WBK) climbed 1.9% and Australia and New Zealand Banking Group (ANZBY) jumped 1.8%.

The Australian dollar (AUDUSD) continued to tumble Friday, hitting a fresh three-year low of $0.8889 as the U.S. dollar held firm and investors anticipated further interest rate cuts from the Reserve Bank of Australia.

In Tokyo, the Nikkei Stock Average climbed 3.3% to 14,466.16 after the U.S. dollar surged against the yen overnight. The greenback is expected to trade even higher in the event of a strong U.S. jobs report.

Monetary easing in Japan remains a major theme, and compared with dollar-yen levels reached as recently as early July, "there is still plenty of runway for [U.S. dollar] longs," said Patrick Bennett, a foreign exchange strategist at Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce in Hong Kong.

The dollar (USDJPY) was recently at Yen99.66, compared with Yen99.56 late Thursday in New York.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index rose 0.5% to 22,190.97 following the U.S. rally. Better-than-expected earnings from tycoon Li Ka-Shing's Cheung Kong (CHEUY) property firm and Hutchison Whampoa (HUWHY) conglomerate added strength. Hutchison Whampoa shares closed 4.5% higher; Cheung Kong rose 1.7%.

China's Shanghai Composite Index ended flat at 2029.42. Analysts said investors are awaiting fresh cues on the direction of the country's reform plans before building sizable positions.

The Future of Ecommerce With Web 3.0 | SiliconANGLE

The internet continues to evolve and as such, new retail business strategies are constantly being developed that take advantage of internet technology. In the first two evolutionary phases of the internet, most retail strategies chased technology; however, as the internet has firmly established itself as an integral part of retail business marketing and sales success, a much more proactive approach is being taken by ecommerce business strategists.

Developers who once waited for trends are now creating internet technologies instead. The enormous customer base created by social media has been realized and now the next evolutionary phase of internet, Web 3.0, is just on the horizon and is already creating exciting new internet retail strategies and technologies that will push ecommerce to great new levels.

Ecommerce and the Web: The Beginning

    ?

Since its first arrival, retail business has been seeking out every opportunity to capitalize on the power and potential of the internet. In its earliest form, the internet was no more than a means to bring static photo and pages of readable text to those who surfed the web. While this was little more than an on-line catalog per se, it was the first step in reaching out to curious new web browsers with a hit and miss chance of capturing a new customer along the way. Ecommerce was born in what was later labeled Web 1.0 or the ?readable? web.

The internet was quick to evolve and it was not long before the technology to interact via World Wide Web arrived. Social networking hit the scene and completely re-wrote the book on how people looked at and used the internet. No longer just a large library of static informational pages of text and photos, the internet was now dynamic and quickly became a part of people?s everyday lives. Web 2.0 brought us the ?writable? internet and with more and more people engaging with the social media trend, marketing technology took advantage of great opportunity such as targeted advertising technologies that monitored the web search requests.

This brought users relevant and even localized product advertisement. Ecommerce was truly developing, but still had not really come into its own as, from a marketing perspective, it was still chasing technology, but that is going to change all too soon.

    Web 3.0: The Future

    ?

Today, internet marketers are no longer waiting to adapt to the next great breakthrough the internet offers them, instead they are taking a proactive approach in creating the next internet evolution, Web 3.0, the Transcendent Web!

From an ecommerce perspective, the aim of Web 3.0 is to capitalize on the expansive social web network. Through new and enhanced methods of interpreting internet user?s habits, it?s possible to learn more of the specifics interests of the shopper (inside and outside of their current behavior,) and bring them a very personalized ecommerce shopping experience. Unlike today?s targeted advertising which may, for example, detect that a user performed an internet search for wedding dresses, which in turn results in advertisement after advertisement of non-specific wedding dresses.

In a Web 3.0 scenario targeted advertisements may result in non-traditional wedding dresses for plus size, middle aged women, better fitting the profile of an individual and making these advertisements far more useful and likely for a sales conversion. Another example might be searching for a movie to watch.

Where the last generation of movie advertisement might bring listings of local cinemas, a Web 3.0 era search might result in horror movies only playing after 10 pm at two specific cinemas, all based on historical information that has been captured and analyzed through the collection social networking and internet browsing data.

Even sentence structure and behavioral data patterns of an individual that can be compared to others and yield insight.

For this revolution in functionality to take place, the web in general will need to grow more accustomed to non-conventional data streams and the sharing of data across multiple applications. Most services attempt to collect information in a bubble, offering some value in return for the exchange of data, yet they are entirely dependent on user submissions and often reliant on if the user has to log into a service before visiting them.

    Web 3.0: Predictions

    .
Where I?d like to see 3.0 go is an internet that can come to terms with the value that shared data brings, without harming their sense of privacy. This is idealistic, as privacy is surely important, and the value and security must be proven before the pitchforks will be put down. Does the convenience of an entire home page (not landing page) of clothing tailored for me outweigh the loss I suffer for them know my gender and build?

Am I losing something if it takes me half the time to find a movie showing, but that movie theatre knows I only see late screenings? The public will have to decide the answer to this question, but the brave marketers who get there first have so much to gain.

Realistically, the first steps will be about realizing the lines of communication we already have in place. The Semantic Web, a collaborative, international movement, will have a large role to play in building Web 3.0. Lead by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C,) the idea is to better structure the internet at large. Standardization is a large part of that, but one less invasive way of understanding your consumers is to better know where they?ve been.

Visitors to a brand have to come from somewhere, and it?s not that current marketers don?t know where they come from, there?s just no easy way for your system to know, realistically, tell that site apart from the web at large. If standardized language can let brands know, seamlessly, what kinds of site they came from (male clothing store, vintage record seller, home improvement outlet,) the process of serving them topical content can become more feasible, without worrying about customer profiles and logins.

Of course, this isn?t to discount the unbridled potential of social profiles. Through the integration of social profiles, the Semantic Web, the technology that will allow the storing of vast amounts of data and the use of artificial intelligence to interpret and filter data, Web 3.0 will be the next great revelation to ecommerce. Web 3.0 is still very much in its infancy stage but it is coming so get prepared!

    97% The Act Of Killing

    All Critics (75) | Top Critics (24) | Fresh (73) | Rotten (2)

A horrifying yet mesmerizing work, "The Act of Killing" instructively meanders at times as in a Werner Herzog film.

Better characters could hardly have been invented.

What Oppenheimer is after is a parallel story, a glimpse into the minds of men who can recount mass killings and think "Those were the days."

"The Act of Killing" works on so many levels -- psychodrama, horror movie, Orwellian nightmare, Poe story -- that sifting through your reactions could take days.

I can't be more direct. "The Act of Killing" is one of the most extraordinary films you'll ever encounter, not to mention one of the craziest filmmaking concepts anywhere, and that includes the whole Bollywood thing.

Directors Joshua Oppenheimer and Christine Cynn have created something extraordinary in The Act of Killing, the much-talked-about documentary about torture and murder during the Indonesian dictatorship of the '60s and '70s.

This riveting documentary about political mass murder in Indonesia incorporates the killers' own movie fantasies about their massacres and deepens our understanding of the fascist brain.

It's a tough watch, but it's not like anything you've ever seen.

Anwar Congo may be the scariest person you'll see on screen this year.

If director Joshua Oppenheimer occasionally loses his way in his own narrative, where this picture demands attention is in its chilling portrait of indoctrination and evil.

It's a gut-wrenching and emotionally exhausting look at impunity that resonates far beyond its obscure central conflict.

A cynically exploitative film made in the name of human rights, which it has about as much to do with as the Punked show on MTV.

Presenting a terrifying view of a hidden holocaust and a moral apocalypse in which the most basic humanities have become twisted beyond recognition, The Act of Killing is a towering achievement in filmmaking, documentary or otherwise.

The magnitude of this achievement, this depiction of a diseased and corrupt society that is in so many ways similar to our own, cannot be understated.
