Question by Yay Ah!: Generally speaking, do most 401k plans allow the participant to invest in individual stocks?
And by individual stocks, I don?t mean the company?s stock. I?m talking about non-employer stocks traded on an exchange.

In addition, do most 401k plans allow the participant invest in any mutual fund of his/her choice? Or do most 401k plans offer only a limited mutual fund selection?

*I know plans vary. But, this is just a general question.

Answer by Sean Roberts
Adam,
A 401K is like a shopping cart in a supermarket. You can buy any type of investment from a stable stock such as Exxon to a speculative venture capital stock, to a mutual fund, to a corporate bond, to a municipal bond, or anything else. I would advise you to diversify your portfolio as much as possible. You are not obligated to buy stock in your employer?s company.

A 401K is handled by a third party investment firm. Your company only knows how much you have contributed to your 401K, but not what you bought with it.

Greek stocks soar on pro-bailout party's poll gain

(AP) ? Greek stock markets rebounded strongly on Monday from a 22-year low on hopes a pro-bailout party will win crucial national elections next month, which would avoid a catastrophic rift with international creditors and keep the struggling country within the euro currency union.

The main stock index in Athens soared to close up 6.9 percent, with the battered bank sector chalking up solid gains.

Four polls published Sunday reversed previous trends to indicate that conservative New Democracy could come first in the June 17 vote, slightly ahead of the anti-austerity radical left Syriza party. Although the conservatives would still fall short of a governing majority, the surveys suggested they could form a coalition government with socialist PASOK, which have also pledged to stick to Greece's austerity commitments.

Banks also received a boost Monday: The country's four largest lenders received promised support of ?18 billion ($22.62 billion) to compensate for losses suffered in a massive debt restructuring deal earlier this year. The announcement was made by Greece's Financial Stability Fund after the Athens bourse closed.

Debt-crippled Greece is being kept afloat by huge international rescue loans, granted on condition of harsh cutbacks and reforms that slashed living standards.

The austerity, however, also caused huge popular resentment toward New Democracy and PASOK, the two parties that accepted the terms. Voters expressed that anger clearly in May 6 elections, giving a boost to anti-bailout parties. But the election proved inconclusive, with none of the parties able to form a coalition government, leaving Greece to hold another ballot next month.

Greece's bailout creditors ? the other countries in the 17-nation eurozone and the International Monetary Fund ? insist that if the country reneges on its austerity commitments, the rescue loans will stop.

That would unleash chaos. The government would be unable to pay hospital workers, police and teachers, pensions would dry up, and a potential panic run on bank deposits would destroy the tottering financial system. Eventually, the country could be forced to abandon the eurozone, reverting to a vastly devalued form of its old drachma currency.

Fears of such an outcome have battered Greek financial markets for weeks, pushing the Athens General Index to close at a 22-year low of 485.18 points on Friday. The latest polls, however, helped it claw back some of those losses, rising to 518.49 points.

"This is clearly due to the polls," said Sergios Melahrinos, analyst at Solidus Securities.

He noted that if the two pro-bailout parties manage to win the election and have Greece honor its austerity commitments, banks would gain access to rescue money needed to avoid collapse. Under the country's latest international bailout, domestic banks that took huge losses from a bond swap that more than halved Greece's privately-held debt will receive billions of euros to boost their capitalization. If a new government in Athens unilaterally tears up the bailout deal ? as Syriza has threatened to do ? the recapitalization would fall through.

"A potential win by the parties that back their recapitalization would be extremely good for lenders."

But Melahrinos warned that the market would remain vulnerable to the ups and downs in the polls in the leadup to the elections. "New polls that show a reversal would obviously change the market picture."

Sunday's surveys gave New Democracy a lead over Syriza ranging from 0.5 to 5.7 percent, with PASOK coming third. The polls also estimated that the two pro-bailout parties would gain a combined 159 to 165 seats in the 300-member parliament, up from 149 after the May 6 vote.

One survey in To Vima newspaper found that 65 percent want Greece to remain in the eurozone even if it has to implement the bailout agreement as it stands, while 24 percent said they would prefer to exit the euro rather than implement austerity policies.

Since the beginning of 2010, Greeks have suffered repeated income cuts and tax hikes, while unemployment has hit record levels with more than one in five workers jobless after tens of thousands of businesses closed. The country is in a fifth year of deep recession, and continues to import about twice as much as it exports.

Report: U.S is trying to convince Russia to remove Syrian President Bashar Alassad and to keep his government

May 27, 2012 ? Middle East Post

pb-120326-obama-medvedev-ps.photoblog900

New York Times reported today that U.S President Obama is making an effort to remove Bashar Alassad while his government stays in its place for a period. The suggested plan is similar to the model that was used in Yemen where former Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh left the chair command and his deputy took control.

The U.S suggested plans includes reaching an agreement with the opposition in Syria that would allow elections later and put an end for the Syrian President Bashar control of the country. The plan?s success depends on Russia?s cooperation and agreement on it since the latter has blocked any UN Security Council action against Al-Assad until now.

Russia refused any military action against Syria and considers it a main ally in the region. Not only that, but the Russian leadership have stated several times that it will not allow an end for the Syrian President that is similar to what happened to former Libyan President Muammar Qaddafi.

In the G8 meeting President Obama suggested the plan to Russian Prime Minister Medvedev that did not seem to refuse it. However, a Russian agreement on such a plan is not easy to get especially that Syria is Moscow?s main Middle East ally and is used for the Russian naval bases.

Texas gunman died in Indiana standoff

VALPARAISO, Indiana ? A coroner reportedly said Saturday that a 48-year-old Texas man allegedly took hostages in a northwestern Indiana realty office and held police at bay for several hours before shooting himself twice in the head.

Porter County Coroner Chuck Harris said Roy L. Ferguson, of Fulshear, Texas, suffered three gunshot wounds before dying, likely from two different weapons, on Friday.

The coroner said Ferguson died at 6:30 p.m., two hours after the end of the nearly seven-hour standoff at Prudential Executive Group Real Estate office in Valparaiso, about 40 miles southeast of Chicago.

?The likelihood of all three gunshot wounds coming from the same weapon is not good,? Harris said.

He said that wouldn?t be confirmed until an autopsy is performed. It had not yet been scheduled because of Memorial Day weekend.

Valparaiso Police spokesman Sgt. Michael Grennes said Saturday that Ferguson had only one firearm ? a handgun. Grennes also said the SWAT officers who rushed inside the office after hearing gunshots at 4:30 p.m. did not fire on Ferguson, but officers exchanged gunfire with Ferguson when the standoff started.

Asked Saturday if police had shot Ferguson, Grennes said, ?It?s under investigation.?

The Times of Munster posted a video report on its website showing police officers crawling through a window of a Valparaiso house owned and rented out by Ferguson to execute a search warrant. The newspaper said Ferguson moved to Texas about four years ago after his wife died.

Meanwhile, police received a 911 call around 10 a.m. Friday reporting a man with a gun had entered the brokerage office, Grennes said. There were fewer than 10 people in the building when the incident began, he said.

One of them was accountant Carolyn Biesen. She was in her office when she heard a commotion near the front desk. Biesen walked out, saw a man standing over her injured co-worker on the ground and yelled at him to leave.

?That?s when he pulled his gun out ? and pointed it in the air,? she told The Associated Press late Friday, several hours after she and several other people were taken hostage.

Biesen, 51, retreated back into her office, locked herself in, shoved a file cabinet in front of the door and called 911. Curled up under her desk, she heard two gunshots, then several more in rapid succession.

Police said later that Ferguson was looking for someone he believed owed him money when he went into the Prudential Executive Group Real Estate office in Valparaiso on Friday morning.

Valparaiso Police Chief Michael Brickner said officers believe Ferguson shot himself twice in the head before SWAT members broke windows and stormed inside less than two hours after the last two hostages had been released unharmed.

An ambulance rushed Ferguson to a hospital, where he died, police said. No hostages reported being shot, though Grennes said one person who was struck in the head was treated and released from a hospital.

Mack Elliott, an agent at the brokerage, wasn?t in the office Friday but said he spoke with agents who were present. He believes the incident stemmed from a dispute over a real estate transaction.

Let Me Share With You About English Language Software

Speaking and writing will never be the same. In English writing, you will find rules that must be followed in order to write properly. Surprisingly, expert English speakers are sometimes not fluent or perfect when they put their words in writing. The spoken words would be loss in transition when it is translated from oral to written. Thus, if expert English speakers are having problems in writing in English, what more would it be when it comes to those who are still trying to learn English.

Such problem may be a bit troubling, but that doesn?t mean you?ll find no solutions for it. Indeed, an English class may help one become better in English, and not just in writing, however, many would say that it is difficult to take a class. Many people who do not prefer taking classes do not want the inconvenience and the expensive costs of taking English classes. Now the question is where do they turn to? The answer would be English language software or tools. You?ll find many different software a person can use, but most of the time, these applications vary based on a person?s skill levels. These learning tools can be designed for those who have little English skills to those who needs to do a little polishing on their skills.

These applications may also be directed for certain writing fields. For instance, you will find applications for business writing, creative writing, formal writing, medical transcription and even legal writing. English software can also be used as a way to help a person become better in English speaking, however, this would depend on what tool is being used. Based on language professionals, a person would only become superior in English if he or she becomes better first in English writing. Hence, most English language learning applications today are mostly about English writing.

In regards to the benefits of using such tools, there are definitely plenty of them. Nevertheless, these tools have two prominent pros. First and foremost, these applications have intensive materials regarding the English grammar. This means one will be able to understand the proper subject-verb agreement, tenses, sentence construction and many other important points in the English grammar. These tools can become handy in order to improve the writer?s English writing skills.

The second advantage of the applications is that they have good dictionary functions. The dictionary they have is not similar to a regular dictionary that provides meaning and definition only. Some functions may include but not limited to idioms, common word usage, linguistic morphology, subtle changes and origins of the word. The dictionary these tools have may also provide jargons and definitions of these jargons. A dictionary function is perfect when it comes to English writing because it becomes a big use, especially in proofreading or spell checking the finished work.

The New Math of Renewable Energy: $50 = $100

By David Kreutzer, Ph.D. ~

Suppose you could produce $50 of electricity but it cost you $100 to do so. Would that make any sense? It would if you work at the White House.

In a speech at a wind-turbine blade manufacturer in Iowa, President Obama called for extending two sets of subsidies that turn energy economics upside down and force higher costs on consumers and taxpayers.

The first extension is for the production tax credit (PTC), which is set to expire at the end of the year. It provides wind-energy producers with a subsidy of about 40 percent of the wholesale cost of electricity. So, when a wind-energy producer sells $50 worth of electricity, Uncle Sam adds another $20 for a total revenue of $70 to the producer.

The second extension is for the Advanced Energy Manufacturing Credit?originally funded in President Obama?s ?stimulus? bill. This 30 percent credit cuts the cost of $100 worth of equipment to just $70.

So there you have it. Fifty dollars of actual revenue is bumped up to $70 with the PTC and $100 of costs are cut to $70 after the special tax credit. That is, $50 = $100 after taxpayers make up the difference.

When wind-energy advocates claim that wind power is on the verge of being competitive, they mean that after the PTC and the manufacturing credit, wind is almost, maybe someday soon, or maybe later (and only if you ignore transmission costs and fickleness of supply problems) on par with conventional power. What a deal.

Perhaps not all of the costs of the wind farm will qualify for the manufacturing credit, but don?t despair. There is more. Many states and regions have renewable power mandates that force consumers to buy renewable electricity?regardless of costs. So there is almost no limit to how expensive renewable electricity can be and still generate a profit for the supplier.

And even that?s not all. Many renewable energy projects and manufacturers receive federal loan guarantees that cut millions of dollars off their costs. In green-energy math, $50 may be greater than $100.

No matter how slick the financial shell games may be?subsidies on top of subsidies on top of mandates?overpriced electricity cannot boost the economy. It may seem like a boost if you are the one getting the subsidy?at least for a while. The workers at the Iowa plant better hope their presidential green-energy photo op works out better for them than it did for Solyndra?s employees.
