Cars banned as Rome moves to protect Coliseum - World News

Claudio Lavanga, NBC News

Pedestrians swarm around the Coliseum in Rome Saturday after cars were banned from part of the Via dei Fori Imperiali.

By Claudio Lavanga, Correspondent, NBC News

ROME -- The Coliseum in Rome was arguably the most beautiful traffic circle in the world. For decades, thousands of cars and vespas zipped around the ancient amphitheater every day. But from Saturday, all that is history.

Exhaust fumes slowly blackened the amphitheater?s once shiny marble, and experts worried the tremors caused by traffic could threaten the fragile monument.?

Part of Via dei Fori Imperiali -- the spectacular cobblestone avenue that leads to the Coliseum -- was closed to traffic apart from public transport Saturday and turned into the ?most stunningly beautiful boulevard in the world.?

Romans and tourists will finally be able stand in front of the most famous symbol of ancient Rome without fearing they will be run over by impatient motorists -- though some nearby roads are still open.

?Visitors will walk where Julius and Augustus Caesar walked, in the shadows of the Campidoglio Hill and magnificent Coliseum,? Ignazio Marino, the newly elected mayor of Rome, said. ?In this location of truly stunning beauty, once more we witness history in the making.?

In a way, Marino has made history of his own.

The pedestrianization of Via dei Fori Imperiali and the Coliseum has been a talking point for decades, but the idea never took off due to the absence of alternative routes for the 1,200 motorists an hour that used it during peak times.

However, Marino turned his election pledge into reality just seven weeks after he took office in June.

?The project came about and has developed thanks to the participation of the men and women of Rome, as a measure which shall enhance quality of life and kindle a new-found love of the city,? Marino boasts on the official project website.

But not all ?men and women of Rome? think the pedestrianization will ?enhance the quality? of their life.

Hundreds people who live on or around roads that will take the bulk of the diverted traffic oppose the project and blame Marino for throwing them to the lions.

On nearby Via Merulana, an avenue already plagued by heavy traffic, smog and noise pollution, locals shook their heads at the sight of police reducing parking spaces to make room for the expected increase in traffic.

A hundred yards away, city council workers drew an extra lane, turning the already bustling road into a kind of inner-city highway.

Fearful that the fast-moving traffic, lack of parking spaces and the general ensuing chaos would drive clients away, angry shopkeepers and others formed a pressure group to stop, or at least modify, the project.

?This can only end badly for us,? Michele de Angelis, a local newsagent, said. ?With fast-moving traffic, nobody is going to be able to stop by, even to buy a newspaper. And traffic will be so bad soon people will simply decide to avoid the area.?

Despite the residents? fears, Marino plans to press on. He plans to kick out the mobile food carts, illegal vendors and costume-clad wannabe gladiators who turned the amphitheater into a tourist trap.

And next, he dreams of closing down surrounding areas to traffic, including the bustling Piazza Venezia.

Marino also hopes to get money from the European Union to start digging in around the forum to turn it into the ?biggest archeological area in the world.?

He may have been mayor of Rome for only seven weeks, but some see a hint of the emperors of old in his ambition and drive.

Google to bring 'find my device' feature to Android

OK, Google: Where the heck did I leave my phone?

On Friday Google announced that it will offer a new service to help users keep track of their Android devices from afar. The service, called Android Device Manager, is similar to the "Find My iPhone" service outed by Apple in 2011, and enables Android phone and tablet owners to remotely find and manage their lost devices. Users will be able to view the current location of their devices on a map; lock their devices remotely; or, if they think a device has been stolen, activate a noisy alarm in order to ward off thieves, or erase all memory on their device.

All of this can be done by logging into the Android Device Manager website on any laptop, desktop or other mobile device.

Google?s Benjamin Poiesz, an Android product manager, explained the purpose of Android Device Manager in a post at the official Android blog:

Android Device Manager can help you keep your data from ending up in the wrong hands. If your phone can?t be recovered, or has been stolen, you can quickly and securely erase all of the data on your device.

The feature will become available later this month and will be able to track all devices running Android 2.2 or newer; a companion app will also be available for download in the Google Play Store. You can read more about the Android Device Manager on the Google blog right here.

'Horror Story' has 'a lot of humor' this season

    TV

From left, executive producer Tim Minear and stars Jessica Lange, Sarah Paulson, Kathy Bates and Angela Bassett at the TCA press tour.

"American Horror Story: Coven" won?t feature Uncle Arthur or Aunt Clara when it returns to FX in October. However, the supernatural-themed series (set to focus on mothers and daughters and witches that migrate from Salem to New Orleans) will be a bit lighter in its tone than season one's "Murder House" and season two's "Asylum."

?It?s definitely a drama,? Sarah Paulson, a returning cast member, shared with TV critics at the summer TCA press tour Friday. ?But there?s a certain lightness to the show. Last season, we couldn?t even sit in the asylum set for very long. We wanted to go back to our trailers and nobody ever does that. These sets (for ?Coven?) are beautiful. I?m walking around my character?s kitchen saying, ?I wish I had this cutting board.? ?

Paulson?s set to play Jessica Lange?s daughter, Cordelia, in "Coven." Lange will portray a witch named Fiona.

"There is a lot of humor and we are embracing a kind of velocity and fun with the series," previewed executive producer Tim Minear.

Though the usually dark drama may be lighter in tone this year, the screams aren't going away.

?You won?t feel like the walls are closing in on you, but you will get scared,? said Minnear.

"Coven" features a female-heavy cast, including Oscar-winner Kathy Bates ("Misery") and Oscar-nominee Angela Bassett ("What?s Love Got To Do With It"), who are playing real-life characters Delphine LaLaurie, a Louisiana socialite/serial killer, and Marie Laveau, a practitioner of voodoo.

?This is a character that?s very different from Harry,? said Bates, the former "Harry?s Law" star, or her murderous character. ?And I?m thrilled to be able to play it!?

?There are some voodoo-ians who?ve offered to show me a few things,? said Bassett.

Lange and Paulson aren?t the only cast members from previous seasons set to return.?

?Evan Peters is back and he will be involved with at least one of the witches in our coven,? said Minear, who added that Peters won?t be playing characters similar to those he portrayed in "Murder House" and "Asylum," but rather ?something new.??

While Paulson?s character has a husband, Minear said that the cast is mostly women.

?All of these women (Lange, Paulson, Bates and Bassett) are playing iconic characters,? said Minear. ?Not all of them are witches, but some of them are. This cast is off-the-hook amazing.??

Sure, FX can be a ?boy?s network,? Minear mused, but ?we have a ?Murders? Row? of actresses, who are very friendly ? friendly until we start doing what we do!??

Verizon offers 500MB 'Share Everything' plan

Verizon offers 500MB 'Share Everything' plan

Verizon has quietly introduced a new 500MB tier to its "Share Everything" plan. The new price structure undercuts Verizon's previous low-end offering - 1GB per month for $50. It helps the company compete with rival AT&T, which offers a 300MB per month for $30, reports Engadget.

Of course, $40 isn't what you pay; Verizon charges you another $40 per smartphone, so you'll be paying $80 per month bare minimum ($120 assuming you actually share with another smartphone user). AT&T similarly tacks on a $40 per smartphone charge. 500MB isn't a pretty small data cap, too: you'll need to remind yourself to hop on wi-fi hotspots at every opportunity (or just not use a data unless you really need it).

But if your wallet is thin, it may be a palatable alternative than doing without altogether.
