Couple Leaves 6-Day-Old Baby, Toddler Home Alone to Go Drinking

Two more Georgia parents have been accused of leaving their small children home alone while they went out drinking, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.

According to authorities, Sean Wayne Grussing and Courtney Rene Tench left their 6-day-old baby and 22-month old boy home alone when they went to a friend's house to drink. Both Grussing and Tench have been charged with two misdemeanor counts of contributing to the deprivation of a minor. Tench, who's 18, has also been charged with underage drinking.

At around 11:45 p.m. on Thursday, a resident of the couple's mobile home park reported seeing a toddler in the street, crying and calling out for his mother. Kennesaw police responded to the call and picked up the 22-month-old boy.

Police noticed that the front door of a nearby trailer was open. Inside they found the couple's newborn crying in a car seat, authorities say.

Grussing and Tench "staggered" into the home soon after, smelling of booze. While Grussing told the officers that they had only been gone for two minutes, Tench said it was five. "She changed her answer to 10 minutes, 15 minutes, 20 minutes, and between 1 to 2 hours," the police report states.

Blood alcohol tests showed that Grussing had a BAC of .223 percent, while Tench's registered at .198 percent. Now both parents are facing two misdemeanor counts of contributing to the deprivation of a minor. Under Georgia's criminal code, a person who's acts or failure to act causes a child to be deprived of food, care, shelter, or any other necessity may be charged with contributing to the deprivation of a minor.

If Sean Wayne Grussing and Courtney Rene Tench are convicted they could each face either a fine of $1,000 or up to 12 months in prison. If they couldn't afford a babysitter, it's doubtful that they could afford that fine.
