Former Yahoo CEO has advice for old company (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? Terry Semel has a message for Yahoo. If you want to regain your mojo, "think twice about rehiring Carol Bartz," Semel said Monday at TheGrill, TheWrap's second annual media leadership conference.

Semel was chairman and CEO of Yahoo from 2001 to 2007.

He made it clear that he did not approve of Bartz' tenure at the Internet portal. In particular, Semel questioned her fondness for four-letter words.

"It's very unusual to have someone cursing all the time," Semel told the crowd at Beverly Hills' SLS Hotel.

Indeed, Bartz' penchant for profanity continued even after she was fired as the company's CEO earlier this month.

Though he didn't get into details, Semel felt that Yahoo still has what it takes to become a Wall Street favorite again -- provided it gets the right leadership.

"I know it's a company that in the right hands could continue to be a very successful company," Semel said.

Select the Color for Your Cork Flooring

Number Of Times Read: 1????

Valid RSS feed?? Category Rss Feed - http://www.electrictext.com/rss.php?rss=74

White cork flooring symbolizes simplicity with sophistication. This feature made me decide to choose white as the color for our house. Certainly, white radiates brightness and freshness. This is a common knowledge to most of us. But using cork for floor cover might be new to some people. Cork is usually associated with wine bottles. For updates, corks have other relevant personal and commercial applications. Cork flooring would be a good example.

For a clearer picture, let's tackle about cork in general. Suberin is the main component of cork as the scientific Quercus suber suggests. It is a waxy type of substance making cork hydrophobic. It means being impermeable and resistant to water. This condition prevents the entry of water and minimizes the occurrence of decomposition. Less or zero decomposition means fewer bacteria, viruses, molds and other unwanted foreign materials resulting to a cleaner and safer environment in our home.

My decision for white cork flooring is not solely because of its appearance. There are other important factors to consider. This includes the cost, maintenance, durability, noise insulation, and comfort. And corks possess excellent features to answer these requirements.

The price is very reasonable and the maintenance cost is minimal. It could be replaced easily because it is covered with polyurethane coating. If white cork flooring starts to deteriorate, it can be replaced or fixed easily.

There are many types of flooring that are available in the market. It could either be soft, hard, resilient, wood, or chemically seamless. Being impermeable, cork flooring is categorized under the resilient type of floor cover. It could tolerate heavy weight and foot traffic. Its resiliency against pressure is so high as compared with other flooring where marks can be seen permanently when pressure is applied on it.

White cork flooring is noise resistant too. As compared with other types of floorings namely tiles, wood, and vinyl; cork is noiseless because it does not heighten sound but rather reduces it. This is important for our baby who needs uninterrupted rest and sleep.

White cork flooring supports the environmental protection advocacies. The process involved in cork production does not sacrifice the life of the mother tree. It does not require cutting down of the whole tree. Instead, corks are produced from the bark of a cork oak tree. This is renewable for almost a decade. If I were you, I would make the right choice now.

SpongeBob study: Do fast-paced cartoons impair kids' thinking?

SpongeBob study: A study published Monday found that 4-year-olds performed worse on tests requiring focus and self-control after watching just nine minutes of 'SpongeBob SquarePants.'

Mom and Dad warned that television would rot your brain, and a new study suggests it's true ? at least from certain frenetic-style cartoons.

Kids who watched just nine minutes of the fast-paced children's cartoon "SpongeBob SquarePants" did worse afterward at tasks requiring focus and self-control than did kids who watched a slow-paced cartoon and kids who entertained themselves by coloring.

The study was small, and scientists weren't sure how long the brain-drain effect persists. But the research highlights the importance not just of how much TV a child watches, but of what kind, said Dimitri Christakis of the Seattle Children's Research Institute at the University of Washington. Christakis was not involved in the study, but penned an accompanying editorial appearing today (Sept. 12) in the journal Pediatrics.

"It's not ? all television that creates deficits in attention," Christakis told LiveScience. "It's the pacing of the program, what we call the 'formal features,' that actually matter."

Kids and cartoons

Earlier observation studies returned mixed results on the effect of television on child development, but there have been enough red flags to concern researchers. For example, in a study published in 2009 in the Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine, Christakis found that television time decreases the verbal back-and-forth between parents and young kids, potentially stifling children's language and social development. [11 Facts Parents Should Know About Their Baby's Brain]

The new study, led by University of Virginia psychologist Angeline Lillard, sought to find out whether the type of TV that children watch makes a difference. The researchers recruited 60 4-year-olds (via their parents) and assigned them to one of three conditions. In the first, the children simply colored for nine minutes. In the second, they watched nine minutes of "a very popular fantastical cartoon about an animated sponge that lives under the sea." The third group of children watched nine minutes of "a realistic Public Broadcasting Service cartoon about a typical U.S. preschool-age boy."

Lillard was not available for an interview to confirm the shows used, but the descriptions match the cartoon "SpongeBob SquarePants" and the PBS show "Caillou."

The shows were chosen for their very different pacing. "SpongeBob" underwent a complete scene change every 11 seconds, with lots of frenetic movement in between, the researchers reported. The PBS show was slower, with a scene change every 34 seconds or so.

Children's shows have become faster-paced over the years even as children watch more television, Christakis said. In the 1970s, children started watching TV at age 4. Today the average age for beginning to watch television is 4 months. The Kaiser Family Foundation estimates that two-thirds of infants and toddlers spend an average of two hours a day watching TV or another screen. The concern is that overstimulation from hyperactive shows will tax the brain, leading to trouble focusing later.

Testing self-control

After the kids finished watching television or coloring, the researchers had them complete a variety of tasks to measure executive control, or the mental ability to focus, avoid distraction and control oneself. Kids did a directions-following test involving moving disks from one peg to another, played a "Simon Says"-like game in which they were asked to touch their head, toes or other parts, and practiced repeating sequences of numbers backwards.

The researchers also gave the kids the famed "marshmallow test," a common challenge for children's self-control. The researchers put out either marshmallows or Goldfish crackers (depending on which the child preferred) and left the room. Before they left, they told the kids that they could ring a bell and eat two marshmallows or crackers immediately. But if they waited instead for the experimenters got back, they could have 10 marshmallows or crackers.

This test of willpower has been shown to predict how much self-control kids will have as adults. That's important, because self-control and delaying gratification are considered keys to everything from maintaining good health to building a successful career.

The effect of the boob tube

The researchers tallied and placed the kids' scores on a standardized scale to compare how well each group did. They found that "SpongeBob" watchers scored consistently more poorly across the board. For example, the average standardized score for a child who watched the PBS program on the marshmallow test was around 0.2. For a child who'd watched the frenetic cartoon, it was close to minus 0.5.

Kids who watched the slow-paced cartoon performed on the same level as kids who spent their time coloring, indicating that it wasn't the act of TV watching that was causing the deficit, but the type of TV being watched.

"It would be wrong for people to overgeneralize this and say 'SpongeBob' is a bad show and 'Caillou' is a good show," Christakis said. "It's not about the specific shows. It's about the features of those shows."

A show like "Sesame Street" is more naturally paced, according to Christakis. Theoretically, that would mean that "Sesame Street" isn't so likely to tax kids' brains, but that theory hasn't been tested. A 1977 study published in the journal Educational Technology Research and Development compared the cognitive effects of fast-paced versus slow-paced "Sesame Street" episodes and found no difference between the two. But a 2004 study in the journal Perceptual & Motor Skills noted that "Sesame Street" itself has picked up the pace since the 1970s, and no one has studied modern episodes.

The researchers aren't yet sure how long the struggles with executive function persist or how children younger and older than in this study sample are affected, but Christakis said observational research suggests that long-term media exposure can have long-term impacts. More and larger studies are needed to answer those questions, he said, but the current research should strike a cautionary chord for parents.

"At minimum, I think parents should take home from this study that I would not encourage them to watch 'SpongeBob' just before their kindergarten assessments," Christakis said.

Planet search finds lots of little guys

Prospects for abundant Earthlike worlds keep improving

Web edition : Tuesday, September 13th, 2011

Planet hunters have unlocked a treasure chest of alien worlds to reveal more than 50 newly discovered planets, including at least 16 not much bigger than Earth and one small, sparkling nugget: a 3.6-Earth-mass planet, parked just inside its star?s life-friendly zone.

?We can say that most of the stars have planets, and most of them have low-mass planets,? says astronomer Francesco Pepe, a member of the Geneva Observatory?s HARPS team that presented their new finds September 12 during the Extreme Solar Systems conference in Moran, Wyoming. HARPS finds distant worlds by focusing on wobbly stars that are being pulled in different directions by orbiting bodies. The update brings the team?s eight-year discovery total to more than 150 planets.

An accompanying study that will appear in an upcoming issue of Astronomy & Astrophysics presents the team?s long-awaited characterization of its planetary population ? and suggests that more than 50 percent of sunlike stars sport a planet. The little guys among them ? with masses between Earth?s and Neptune?s ? occur primarily in planetary systems. The latest planet dump suggests that roughly 70 to 80 percent of low-mass planets might live in multiplanet neighborhoods, Pepe says.

?The handwriting is more than on the wall now. We can see that most stars have planetary systems, probably like our own,? says astronomer Debra Fischer of Yale University. ?This paper is a home-run hit for the Geneva team.?

The new collection suggests that lighter planets are more common in extrasolar systems than heavier Jupiter-like ones. Though the discovery of Earth-sized planets remains in the future, when such planets do come out of the darkness astronomers predict they will be yet more common.

It?s likely that results from HARPS and NASA?s Kepler space telescope will inform some of the terms in the Drake Equation, Fischer notes, referring to SETI Institute astronomer Frank Drake, whose 1961 equation predicts how many detectable extraterrestrial civilizations exist in the Milky Way. Among other things, the equation considers the fraction of sunlike stars in the galaxy that host planets, and the fraction of those planets that are Earthlike.

While surveys haven?t detected any Earth-massed planets yet, they?re getting close. HARPS previously bagged a planet with 1.8 Earth-masses; and the newly discovered planet HD 85512b, which lives in the habitable zone around its star in the constellation Vela, is only 3.6 Earth-masses. As instruments become more precise and planet-finding missions like Kepler continue to stare at stars, finding Earth-like planets in life-friendly orbits looms.

?The floodgates are about to open,? Fischer says. ?Between what Kepler is doing and these Doppler surveys, we?re really on the threshold of seeing a whole population of planets in this so-called habitable zone.?

Within a decade, astronomers hope to aim telescopes like the planned European Extremely Large Telescope at target exoplanets to sniff out the presence of oxygen or other biomarkers in their atmospheres from across intragalactic space. Right now, there are no instruments capable of doing this ? but there will be. ?The main science goal is not detecting exoplanets, but characterizing them,? says Markus Kissler-Patig of the European Southern Observatory, noting that the next few years present a ?fantastic opportunity? for amassing a catalog of target planets.

Obama welcomes Libyan ambassador (AP)

WASHINGTON ? President Barack Obama has formally received Libya's ambassador to the U.S. and accepted his credentials to represent the country and its new rebel government. The ambassador, Ali Aujali, was also the envoy under Moammar Gadhafi until he broke with the regime and called for Gadhafi to resign.

The White House says Obama accepted Aujali's credentials in the Oval Office Friday along with those of other recently arrived ambassadors. The traditional ceremony marks the formal beginning of an ambassador's service in Washington.

National Security Council spokesman Tommy Vietor says the U.S. congratulates the Libyan people and the rebel government will find an ally in the U.S. as it undertakes a transition to democracy.

Libyan fighters said they clashed Friday with Gadhafi loyalists in one of the old the regime's last holdouts.

Home Woodworking Projects Helped Make My House My Dream ...

By admin. Filed in Dream Home? | ??

Home woodworking projects have always been an activity I?ve enjoyed, but I could only find them in books and magazines I bought at the hardware store. These books are either out of date or they have too few projects available that I end up spending more money on woodworker projects than I want to. I have also found that these books and magazines have few DIY woodworking plans that I want to use so I end up buying more of these expensive books than I need.

When I found this Internet website I noticed that there are many home woodworker projects I could use to improve my home. My wife and I just had our first baby, and I was able to use the baby crib plan to for Kenny?s crib. I also made a few wooden toys when I had a little spare time. My wife, Susan loves the new redwood deck I put in with some friends last summer. We also made two picnic benches that we use when we have barbecues in our yard. Our guests are always so surprised that I built the deck because it looks so professional. I am proud of my dining room hutch because I made it to match my dining table that I built as well.

After a day of woodworking I love relaxing in my hammock that I built. Relaxing in it is so much more enjoyable because I know that something I made can be so comfortable. I like the sounds of nature when I?m lying in my hammock in my yard.

My wife and a few of my neighbors feel like the woodworking projects I do at home have allowed me to turn my yard into a more nature friendly yard full of bird houses and feeders. With the success from my home woodworking projects I was able to build a more comfortable lifestyle for my family at a fraction of the cost. These DIY projects helped me realize that I have turned my house into my dream home.

The woodworking projects I found at http://HOMEWOODOWRKINGPROJECTS.COM were exactly what i needed to create many pieces of beautiful furniture that my family will love for many years to come.

The Missouri Value-Added Loan Guarantee program has expanded ...

The Missouri Value-Added Loan Guarantee program has expanded to include qualifying state agribusinesses. Click to hear KMZU?s Chelsea Wade talk with Missouri Agricultural and Small Business Development Authority Spokesperson Tony Stafford.

Tony Stafford

Press Release from the Missouri Department of Agriculture:

(JEFFERSON CITY, Mo.) ? The Missouri Value-Added Loan Guarantee Program has been expanded to offer loan guarantees to qualifying Missouri agribusinesses, allowing businesses like feed and agricultural supply stores, veterinary clinics, food processors and equipment manufacturers to participate alongside Missouri?s agricultural producers. The expanded scope became effective August 28, 2011, creating an opportunity for those businesses to receive a loan guarantee up to $125,000.

?This is an important change for our producers and agribusinesses as they look for ways to add value to Missouri?s agricultural commodities and expand opportunities for their operations,? said Director of Agriculture Dr. Jon Hagler. ?This program provides a guarantee for Missouri?s farmers and agribusiness owners as they seek loans from commercial lenders, paving the way for them to grow their farms and farm-oriented operations.?

The Missouri Agricultural and Small Business Development Authority (MASBDA) administers the program to foster the expansion of existing and creation of new enterprises that will aid rural economic development. Through the program, MASBDA may provide a 50 percent first-loss guarantee on loans up to $250,000 from a commercial lender.

A qualifying agribusiness includes businesses whose primary customers are producers of agricultural goods and products, and businesses who support the agriculture industry by providing goods and services used for producing or processing agricultural products.

Loans by local lenders, which may be guaranteed by the Value-Added Loan Guarantee Program, may now be used to:

1. Finance agricultural property, including land, buildings, structures, improvements and equipment used for the purpose of processing, manufacturing, marketing, exporting or adding value to an agricultural product

2. Finance the expansion, acquisition, construction, improvement or rehabilitation of a qualifying agribusiness

3. Purchase stock in a start-up cooperative that processes an agricultural product. Loan proceeds may not be used for producing livestock or agricultural crops except for grapes to be processed into wine.

Borrowers qualifying for the Value-Added Loan Guarantee Program may also qualify for the Missouri Linked Deposit Program, administered by the Missouri State Treasurer?s Office, which provides funds at reduced interest rates to lenders which are then shared with agricultural borrowers.

For more information about the loan guarantee, dual eligibility and other agricultural finance programs, visit mda.mo.gov or call MASBDA at (573) 751-2129.

Entrepreneurship and Human Resources | News for You from ...

Through many years of working with entrepreneurs, the thing most likely to bring success to a sudden stop is the lack of attention to the area of human resources. Despite the fact that people costs of the growing business are the biggest single expense, very little attention is paid to this area until the entrepreneurial train hits the buffers.

Whilst I can see why this happens, it is still an inexcusable error by the would-be entrepreneur. When the business first starts there are usually only a small number of people involved and they are usually highly committed to the new venture and interact on a daily, and often hourly, basis. However, as the business grows so does the number of people. Moreover, newer employees are more likely to join because they want the job rather than because they have the evangelistic zeal of the entrepreneur. Add to that the increasing difficulty of communicating with a larger group and human resources is now a time-bomb waiting to explode in the entrepreneur?s face.

Unfortunately, by the time the entrepreneur is aware of the problem, the cost in money and time of correcting this big hole in the master plan will be far more than had it been included in the beginning. Entrepreneurs understand clearly the need for a business plan, a marketing plan and a financial plan and yet most do not have a good human resource plan.

Some of my experiences of this have been truly astounding. In 2009 as part of a consultancy to implement good human resource practices in a 150 person company in Turkey I facilitated the first formal managers meeting with a clear agenda for forty years. Until then all communications had been carried out either in the dining room or when people passed each other in the factory. As a consequence miss-communication was costing the company more money than the size of their bank loan.

In a second company in Turkey, although there was a wonderful organisation chart in a desk drawer, in reality everyone reported to the chief executive resulting in him wasting most of his day with silly little queries.

Worst of all was a business in the UK that only admitted that they had a human resource problem the day that they received a formal notification of proceedings through an industrial tribunal for bad human resource practices. This was not because they were a bad employer but because they did not give human resources the correct attention.

So, in order to try and keep others from a similar fate, here are my top tips for managing human resources.

  1. Make sure that, parallel to your business plan,  you produce a human resource plan to support it.
  2. Before you employ anyone make sure you have a documented job description and person description. The first of these will tell you what you want the person to do and the second will tell you what type of person you require.
  3. Always consider whether you really need the person long term or whether there are other ways of getting the work done. Too many companies deal with a crisis by hiring and then when the crisis is over they find themselves paying for someone with nothing to do.
  4. When hiring, if you don?t get the right person first time around, go around the loop again. Don?t take second best.
  5. When drawing up an organisation chart make sure that titles also have responsibilities associated with them. A person cannot be called a manager if they do not have the responsibility and accountability to manage those beneath them.
  6. When hiring people, make sure that you pick people that believe in your product or service. That remains true from the top to the bottom of the organisation. A telephonist that does not believe in the product or service is capable of damaging your business.
  7. Make sure that you hire people that are smarter than you. If you hire people less smart than you then they will do the same. Soon the company will be full of the least able people!
  8. Make sure that you employ people that want to be developed. One organisation in the UK, called Talent, believes that we are all like icebergs with most of our potential not showing. This company will offer any job to the first person that walks in the door provided they commit to a development programme.
  9. Once you have your employees make sure you have policies and practices to manage, develop and appraise them. Getting the right person is a hard job so it is worth putting in the effort to keep them.
  10. Remember that people are a key resource and not an ego trip. Businesses are measured in terms of profitability, not in terms of the number of employees. One business I know has had a workforce that has fluctuated constantly between 2 and 25 employees. Strangely the profitability, or lack of it, has never altered!
  11. This last tip is here for a very good reason. It is to remind you no subject has exactly ten top tips! Don?t think that following these tips will solve all of your problems but they will give you a good start.

Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who cut short a presidential campaign trip to South Carolina to return to help oversee firefighting efforts in Texas, speaks during a news conference Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2011, in Austin, Texas. Perry marveled at the destruction and pointed out that more than 100,000 acres in the drought-stricken state had burned over the past week, and that more than 3.5 million acres _ an area roughly the size of Connecticut _ had burned since December. (AP Photo/Austin American-Statesman, Ricardo B. Brazziell) MAGS OUT; NO SALES; TV OUT; INTERNET OUT; AP MEMBERS ONLY

(AP) ? Call it a leadership test in real time.

Gov. Rick Perry left the presidential campaign trail this week to dash back to Texas, where wildfires have devoured more than 1,000 homes in barely seven days.

"Not paying attention to politics right now" is how the conservative Republican explained it after he ditched a high-profile campaign appearance in early-voting South Carolina to tend to his duties as governor. His attendance at a debate Wednesday night in California ? it would be his first on the national stage ? is now in question.

Perry spokesman Mark Miner said the candidate plans to attend the debate and that some of the campaign's key staff is already in California, where they have announced that the governor won't deviate from planned public appearances or private fundraising efforts. But Perry himself has been less committal.

"I'm substantially more concerned about making sure Texans are being taken care of," he said Tuesday after viewing by helicopter a fire-ravaged neighborhood west of Austin.

His message was clear: governing first, politics second.

The wildfires come just weeks after Perry entered the GOP presidential race and shot to the top of national polls taking an early measure of the Republican field.

It didn't take long for Perry to be subjected to the scrutiny a presidential campaign brings. He has faced criticism for his record as Texas governor and his positions on some issues. His down-home, Texas-style demeanor hasn't always played well on a national stage.

Now, Perry ? whose job includes coordinating his state's wildfire response ? has the chance to try to boost his image and set himself apart from his GOP presidential rivals by showing off his leadership and management skills as Republicans nationwide weigh whether he has what it takes to be president. Not one of his opponents is a sitting governor.

"It gives Perry an opportunity to demonstrate leadership, to demonstrate decisiveness and at the same time empathy and caring," said Todd Harris, a Republican consultant who has worked on a number of GOP presidential campaigns. "You can't do anything that looks, sounds or smells even remotely political. If it looks like you are taking advantage of a disaster and trying to use it for political purposes, it will backfire."

Perry also could end up looking weak and ineffective should the fires continue to rage without interruption or if the state's response is perceived to be slow or subpar. Just ask former President George W. Bush, whose sluggish response to Hurricane Katrina shaped his second term and forever tarnished his reputation.

"It's always an advantage for a candidate to be acting rather than talking," said Frank Donatelli, chairman of GOPAC, an organization that trains Republicans to run for elective office. "If you take control of the situation and then don't deliver, that's a bad thing."

And Perry could open himself up to charges of hypocrisy.

He has said he will request federal disaster relief for this round of wildfires ? although he bashes the federal government and Washington every chance he gets, even as flames envelop parts of his state. And while he was seeking federal money, he took a swipe at the Defense Department, suggesting that bureaucratic red tape was holding up bulldozers and other equipment from nearby Fort Hood that could be used to fight the fires around central Texas.

"It's more difficult than it should be to get those types of assets freed up by the federal government," Perry said. "When you've got people hurting, when you've got lives that are in danger in particular, I really don't care who the asset belongs to. If it's sitting in some yard somewhere and not helping be part of the solution, that's a problem."

Perry overlooked the fact that Fort Hood is battling its own wildfires. Tyler Broadway, a spokesman for the post, said bulldozers cutting firebreaks around the blaze were part of an effort that had fires there only 60 percent contained by Tuesday night.

Fires have blackened 3.5 million acres, an area roughly the size of Connecticut, across the state since December.

President Barack Obama rejected Texas' request in April for federal aid due to wildfires, but then declared 45 fire-ravaged counties a major disaster in July, after Perry wrote to the White House to appeal the previous decision. The Agriculture Department has also declared all of Texas a natural disaster area due to a relentless drought, making farmers eligible for low-interest emergency loans.

As fire raged back home on Sunday, Perry abruptly left a campaign trip to South Carolina to head to Bastrop, a quaint community about 25 miles from Austin where a wildfire that spanned more than 16 miles was raging out of control. When he arrived, Perry got an earful from evacuated residents who demanded to know why more state planes weren't being used to pour water on the flames.

"Where are the planes?" several gathered in the municipal building's lobby shouted.

Clearly taken aback, Perry mumbled, "The planes are flying."

"We don't seem them!" some in the crowd shot back.

But the heckling was short-lived. The same crowd applauded a few minutes later when Perry responded to a question about Wednesday's debate in Simi Valley, Calif., saying he was "not paying attention to politics right now."

Despite aides' assurances he definitely will debate, Perry left open the possibility that he still may skip it. Asked if he would have time to prepare even if he does attend, Perry said, "We'll deal with that when it comes up."

Democratic US Rep. Baldwin joins Wis. Senate race (AP)

MADISON, Wis. ? U.S. Rep. Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin entered the race Tuesday for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by retiring Democrat Herb Kohl, becoming the first Democrat to officially jump in to what will be an important race for her party to win in order to maintain majority control.

One of the most liberal members of Congress, Baldwin had been saying since Kohl announced his retirement in May that she was seriously considering a Senate bid. Her congressional district includes the city of Madison, a liberal Democratic stronghold, and some surrounding rural areas.

Baldwin, 49, made her announcement in an email and video announcement to supporters early Tuesday. If elected, she would become the first openly gay member of the Senate.

Baldwin, the first woman who Wisconsin voters sent to Congress, was also the first person elected to Congress after announcing they were gay. She was first elected in 1998.

The Wisconsin seat is one of at least eight open spots that will help determine the balance of power in the Senate, where Republicans need to pick up just four seats to take control.

In her message to supporters, Baldwin tried to move herself to the political center by positioning herself as the best candidate for middle-class voters feeling squeezed in the tough economy.

"It's time politicians looked out for seniors, working families and the middle class ? instead of protecting the profits of big oil and Wall Street," she said.

Baldwin also used her video message to mention her opposition to the war in Iraq and her support for ending the war in Afghanistan, as well as to hint at the obstacles her candidacy will face as she seeks to win her first statewide election.

"I'm used to facing challenges head on," she said. "When I first ran for Congress in 1998, people counted me out. But we worked hard, campaigned across south-central Wisconsin, and we won."

Republicans are sure to go after Baldwin's liberal voting record, hoping to sway independent and moderate voters their way in a state that has swung between handing President Barack Obama a 14-point win in 2008 and kicking Democrats out of power in the Statehouse in 2010.

Former Republican U.S. Rep. Mark Neumann entered the Senate race last week. Neumann said at the time that he was focusing his campaign on Baldwin, who he presumed would capture the Democratic nomination.

But there promises to be a spirited contest on the GOP side, with longtime Gov. Tommy Thompson making serious moves toward his first run for office since 1998. Other Republicans indicating they plan to run include Assembly Speaker Jeff Fitzgerald, a top ally of polarizing Gov. Scott Walker; state Sen. Frank Lasee, a lawmaker who once advocated arming teachers to protect their classrooms; and former state Sen. Ted Kanavas, a lower-profile candidate who's been quietly building support.

On the Democratic side, U.S. Rep. Ron Kind of La Crosse is considering running, as is former two-term U.S. Rep. Steve Kagen of Appleton. Former Sen. Russ Feingold, who lost re-election last year to Republican Ron Johnson, has said he wouldn't run for any office in 2012.

The majority of Individuals Take The Energy They Make use of For ...

Taking some of our energy sources for granted is actually routine for some of us. We switch on the lights and also electrical appliances without giving a thought to the supply of the power. In the same manner, we don?t really know where the gas comes from that we use to run our vehicles and we don?t fully understand precisely how a car operates. Our most important concern, usually, is why it costs so much, and where can we find a cheaper source? We don?t usually worry about whether or not we?re about to run out of fossil fuels in the foreseeable future.

The majority of men and women think that only radicals talk about renewable energy. A standard fossil fuel source is coal, natural gas, and also oil, all of which are exhaustible resources. What is termed alternative energy is something apart from those, for example solar, wind, biomass, or wave and tidal energy. Alternative energy is normally renewable, kind to the environment, and certainly not well accepted in the mainstream. We have a world that is certainly filled with people, who use energy, food, water, minerals, and wood every day. As we depend heavily on fossil fuels, increased energy intake causes increased pollution as well as the depletion involving our natural resources.

Future generations are going to be significantly affected by the harm we?re currently inflicting on the atmosphere. Non-renewable energy sources that we have been using, not only generate carbon dioxide, however they are also running out. Carbon dioxide, generally regarded as being a greenhouse gas, causes global warming any time it traps the sun?s heat and prevents it from leaving the earth?s atmosphere. For this reason, it is necessary that we locate renewable sources of energy.

There are a number of countries outside of the United States who offer incentives to private businesses who use replenishable energy. At the present, only 14% of worldwide energy usage is derived from renewable sources. Alternative energy has many stimulating possibilities and might even be able to provide all the energy that the people of the earth require. Among the most popular alternate energy sources are sunshine, wind, rain, and geothermal heat. Wind energy is produced by wind turbines which produce a low-maintenance, pollution-free energy that necessitates a fairly substantial upfront cost. Sunlight can be transformed into electricity and also heat through the use of solar energy technology. Homes, greenhouses, along with other buildings may be heated efficiently with solar energy.

A renewable source that comes from plant along with animal waste material is biomass energy. It is rather effective as it uses available methane gas and other waste materials that are normally thrown out. Biomass fuels, like ethanol, may be used as an alternative to fuel. Hydropower is using the energy created by water precisely as it falls in elevation. Since the early on age of electrical power, dams have been constructed to take advantage of hydroelectric power. This technology has yet to be totally created.

Snowboarder Rice goes big on 'The Art of Flight' (AP)

SNOWMASS VILLAGE, Colo. ? Extreme snowboarder Travis Rice isn't interested in making mere "ski porn" films ? the downhill documentaries known for showing trick after breathtaking trick over a soundtrack of thrashing guitars.

For Rice and director Curt Morgan, one-upping traditional snow sports movies with their latest film, "The Art of Flight," meant using the latest cutting-edge equipment, including a high-definition camera that shoots 1,050 frames a second.

It also meant taking bigger risks ? such as going to mountains no one's ever touched and doing tricks no one's ever tried. At least three snowboarders were hospitalized while filming "The Art of Flight."

And it meant telling good stories ? like when snowboarders had to dive into icy waters high in the Andes of South America to reach their helicopter before it ran out of fuel to fly them out. `"Really scary, we almost died' ? that sort of thing," Morgan said.

"The Art of Flight" premieres Wednesday at New York's Beacon Theatre, then screens in selected cities, including Seattle, Denver, Minneapolis, Montreal and Boston, before concluding the tour Nov. 3 at San Francisco's Palace of Fine Arts.

The film stars Rice, 28, who is among the sport's top riders. Morgan, 29, once rode professionally with Rice but gave it up after breaking his back three times.

Morgan eventually founded Jackson, Wyo.-based Brain Farm Digital Cinema, which made "The Art of Flight" and also produced Rice's "That's It, That's All." That 2008 film broadened the snowboarding film experience by melding big-air tricks with nature and wildlife photography from the far-off places Rice and friends traveled.

"What's really cool about Brain Farm is their films hit more of the mainstream," said Waide Hoyt of Standard Films, an industry pioneer. "They bring people who may not watch snowboard movies or purchase them to check them out."

"That's the whole challenge here," Morgan said. "You have a core audience that's really small. We're trying to find a way for our stories to transcend to the mainstream. We're trying to push the boundaries and still hold on to the core."

Morgan won't discuss it, but the production budget for "The Art of Flight," heavily supported by Red Bull and other sponsors, is said to be around $2 million ? huge for snowboarding flicks typically shown at festivals or limited screenings.

A big chunk of that budget went for helicopters, sometimes two at a time, with one dropping riders off on narrow ridges and another shooting the action with a high-definition Cineflex camera system.

"People are trying to do something gnarlier to outdo the next person. In turn, you create more challenges and sketchy situations. We've set ourselves up for some painful days," Morgan said.

The new movie includes some of the backstory of those situations, like braving high winds and the prospect of no rescue in the forbidding Darwin Range of southernmost Chile, where a helicopter pilot once told Morgan the devil lives.

"If you get stuck out there, you're pretty much done for," Morgan said.

Part of what made it tricky was the helicopter only carried about 120 minutes' worth of fuel, and it took about 80 minutes round-trip to get to where Morgan wanted to shoot the riders taking on a narrow chute. The movie trailer shows snowboarders tossing their boards across an icy gap and plunging into chilly water so they could get back to their helicopter before it ran out of fuel.

Besides Chile, the movie features backcountry footage from Alaska, British Columbia and Wyoming. The team also spent part of last May shooting at Colorado's Snowmass ski area after it closed for the season.

All told, Morgan's crew shot more than 2,600 hours of footage for the movie and eight, one-hour episodes of a planned television show on how Morgan and Rice make their movies. Brain Farm is negotiating with networks.

Any snowboard movie faces the risk of avalanches and bad weather. And it can take weeks to get the right mix of fresh snow, sunlight and calm winds that won't ground helicopters or toss riders who are launching 50 to 60 feet into the air.

"Any day you get a shot is a good day," Rice said. "You chip away at an hour-long project five seconds at a time."

Then there are the injuries.

In January, Scotty Lago, the 2010 Winter Olympics halfpipe bronze medalist, broke his jaw after slamming it against his knee on a landing in the Wyoming backcountry. And Mark Landvik required knee surgery after a bad landing off a backside 360. At Snowmass in May, Canadian Sebastien Toutant broke his ankle while warming up.

But it wasn't all pain and suffering at the Snowmass shoot. Canadian up-and-comer Mark McMorris successfully landed a rare triple cork, essentially a twisted triple flip. The next day, Landvik, still out of action while recovering from the knee surgery, marched around in a fake mullet and cutoff jeans to lighten the mood. Others launched into slow-motion snow fights and impromptu rapping with a Shake Weight.

Meanwhile, Morgan's crew manned five video cameras, including a Phantom, which shoots so many frames per second that it can turn four seconds of real-time action into four minutes of slow-motion on a movie screen.

At one point, Lago and others joined Rice riding on custom-built terrain features created by Aspen Skiing Co. staff based on crude sketches by Morgan's team. The custom features included a tight cluster of shapely, 20-foot-high mounds the riders nicknamed "Gumdrop Land" or "Volcano Land" ? at least those were the G-rated nicknames.

Where did the idea for that come from?

"Beer," Morgan said, adding that Rice originally wanted to jump over ice sculptures, a snow Brontosaurus, and a full-on snow girl.

"It's very much a fantasy snowboarding movie," Rice said.

But it's not ski porn.

"There's story," Morgan said. "Porn is just action set to music."

Sweden earmarks $630,000 to protect its Jews (AP)

STOCKHOLM ? Sweden has earmarked 4 million kronor ($630,000) to boost security for the country's small Jewish minority.

The move comes after criticism at home and internationally that Sweden needs to do more to protect Jews from anti-Semitic hate crimes.

Integration Minister Erik Ullenhag says if no extra security measures are taken "there is a risk that people don't dare visit synagogues in Sweden."

Sweden saw a surge in reported hate crimes against Jews ? including harassment, violence and vandalism ? in the wake of Israel's invasion of Gaza in 2009. Many Swedish Jews say they've experienced growing hostility in recent years, especially in the southern city of Malmo, which has a fast-growing Muslim population.

An estimated 20,000 Jews live in Sweden.

Handicap Greyhound ? Use this to win the first secret Turn

Track after a few trips to the dog, you find yourself, along with all the other punters and winced as chief dogs in the first round. You might as well close your eyes, like my friend, Benny ago. Do not open again until the dogs are around the corner and into the back straight.

The reason for the first round is so concerned is because of what is happening there, in as many races. Dogs hit the other dogs. The dogs go in the direction of the train and cut off other dogs. Dogs mustand extracting many other dogs. And "grueling.

But a few clever handicap have learned to exploit the situation first corner and you can too. All it takes is a few minutes with the program and common sense. What you seek is what the game is played and what impact running style every dog will have his first round performance.

I look at the initial velocity first dogs. The first installment of course, is not only dog ??that out of the boxfirst. It is also the first dog to get it in front of others. What I am looking for is a dog, any dog in the first round can beat almost every time he runs into the extent it is today.

Then I have other dogs you are looking for signs that the curves are in difficulties. If I find that most of them performed a similar style, that have in the first round of conflict, you look very well in the race. I wonder if it seems likely that the initial velocitylast dog on the finish line first.

If a fader is not big and look good form and his class, I bet to win it and play with him in quinielas with other dogs, the candidates look to me. Often the dog wins top speed in contrast Quiniela pretty good and it pays well.

This is particularly useful if the amount is a favorite by another dog in the race, even if you do not have the class that the dog has initial velocity. Often there is a young dog, has hisalso decide in a race of inferior quality or M and the audience, he can not lose. Then fly the first round, or by another dog hit on the turn and that's all she wrote.

Reminder: What is Venture Capital? | Matthew Roszak

We talk a lot about venture capital on this blog; how to attract it for your business, how to increase yields from business you invest in, etc. But to those who might be new to this blog and/or the idea of venture capital this article is designed to get your mind wrapped around just what exactly venture capital means. In a nutshell venture capital is money that has been invested into a start up company that can not get money the traditional way such as getting a loan from a bank or a company that might potentially be failing and plans to restructure using the raised money. The idea of venture capital is one of high risk for high reward.

By:?BMA Editorial Team A

Business needs money to grow and thrive but their business plan is not always understood by traditional banking who is not keen on risk and has criteria that isn?t generally conducive to building a better business. That?s where venture capital can help. But what is venture capital?

Venture capital keeps business booming! It is a way that new business can get start up capital and begin to thrive and it?s a way that established business could expand. That?s because venture capitalists are looking for new and innovative ventures that have the potential to have huge yields. They are not interested as much in businesses that are already flourishing they are interested in expansions that have a risk attached to them and to restructuring. Think of them sort of like a risk junkie that needs a fix.

Venture capital is money that a venture capitalist puts forward to a business venture in return for having a stake in the company. Venture capital is not a loan. Venture capitalists invest in hopes that there will be a big yield in the future that will make them a whole lot of money. That means whatever the future profits are the venture capitalist will share in it.

There is no question that venture capital is risky but it is also the main source of funding for start up companies that have few other sources they can rely on. It?s a well known fact that those with ideas have no money and those with money are often lacking ideas so venture capital is a great way to marry up the two in a way that benefits both parties.

When venture capitalists look for venture capital investments they look for a company that is small and new with a very promising future. In this way they can bring very little cash to the table and have the chance of making millions if all goes well. Although venture capitalists take big risks the gains can also be enormous.

Venture capitalists have their own team that spends their time watching what?s happening in the business front. They watch for companies that are struggling and very vulnerable but have extreme growth potential. Other capitalists will enlist the services of a private equity firm, or something similar, which has the job of matching up entrepreneur with venture capitalist.

Having an idea and a business plan is what entrepreneurs do. They are also a breed of individuals that are willing to take risk, and they are willing to lose everything, because they are confident their idea is sound and will make them money. Thankfully the venture capitalists couldn?t be bothered to come up with their own idea of what to do with their money instead leaving the ideas to you while they become the investor.

Now that you know what venture capital it, do you think it is right for your new business? Do seriously consider it, because venture capital is a way to catapult your business into an entirely different dimension?
