Supersymmetry Fails Test, Forcing Physics to Seek New Ideas

With the Large Hadron Collider unable to find the particles that the theory says must exist, the field of particle physics is back to its "nightmare scenario"

From Simons Science News

?

As a young theorist in Moscow in 1982, Mikhail Shifman became enthralled with an elegant new theory called supersymmetry that attempted to incorporate the known elementary particles into a more complete inventory of the universe.

?My papers from that time really radiate enthusiasm,? said Shifman, now a 63-year-old professor at the University of Minnesota. Over the decades, he and thousands of other physicists developed the supersymmetry hypothesis, confident that experiments would confirm it. ?But nature apparently doesn?t want it,? he said. ?At least not in its original simple form.?

With the world?s largest supercollider unable to find any of the particles the theory says must exist, Shifman is joining a growing chorus of researchers urging their peers to change course.

In an essay posted last month on the physics website arXiv.org, Shifman called on his colleagues to abandon the path of ?developing contrived baroque-like aesthetically unappealing modifications? of supersymmetry to get around the fact that more straightforward versions of the theory have failed experimental tests. The time has come, he wrote, to ?start thinking and developing new ideas.?

But there is little to build on. So far, no hints of "new physics" beyond the Standard Model ? the accepted set of equations describing the known elementary particles ? have shown up in experiments at the Large Hadron Collider, operated by the European research laboratory CERN outside Geneva, or anywhere else. (The recently discovered Higgs boson was predicted by the Standard Model.) The latest round of proton-smashing experiments, presented earlier this month at the Hadron Collider Physics conference in Kyoto, Japan, ruled out another broad class of supersymmetry models, as well as other theories of ?new physics,? by finding nothing unexpected in the rates of several particle decays.

?Of course, it is disappointing,? Shifman said. ?We?re not gods. We?re not prophets. In the absence of some guidance from experimental data, how do you guess something about nature??

Younger particle physicists now face a tough choice: follow the decades-long trail their mentors blazed, adopting ever more contrived versions of supersymmetry, or strike out on their own, without guidance from any intriguing new data.

"It's a difficult question that most of us are trying not to answer yet," said Adam Falkowski, a theoretical particle physicist from the University of Paris-South in Orsay, France, who is currently working at CERN. In a blog post about the recent experimental results, Falkowski joked that it was time to start applying for jobs in neuroscience.

?There?s no way you can really call it encouraging,? said Stephen Martin, a high-energy particle physicist at Northern Illinois University who works on supersymmetry, or SUSY for short. ?I?m certainly not someone who believes SUSY has to be right; I just can?t think of anything better.?

Supersymmetry has dominated the particle physics landscape for decades, to the exclusion of all but a few alternative theories of physics beyond the Standard Model.

?It's hard to overstate just how much particle physicists of the past 20 to 30 years have invested in SUSY as a hypothesis, so the failure of the idea is going to have major implications for the field,? said Peter Woit, a particle theorist and mathematician at Columbia University.

The theory is alluring for three primary reasons: It predicts the existence of particles that could constitute "dark matter," an invisible substance that permeates the outskirts of galaxies. It unifies three of the fundamental forces at high energies. And ? by far the biggest motivation for studying supersymmetry ? it solves a conundrum in physics known as the hierarchy problem.

Syrian internet goes down, gets cut off from the world

The civil war-torn nation of Syria has seemingly disappeared from the internet. In a sign that the regime of President Bashar al-Assad is trying to limit the flow of information and possibly increase its violent crackdown on opposition forces, all 84 blocks of IP addresses used by the nation have gone offline. The blackout was first reported by Renesys this morning at around 5:26am ET and the #SyriaBlackout hashtag has started picking up steam on Twitter as others have noticed. While it's unclear exactly what has happened and investigations are on going, and a nationwide outage is highly suspicious. The Associated Press is reporting that rebels are laying blame for the blackout at the feet of the government and that cellphone service has also been severed. We'll update as more information rolls in, but we wouldn't expect good news.

Update: Akamai has provided more confirmation of the outage. As you can see in the image above, at some point this morning the amount of data coming out of Syria simply dropped to zero.

U.N. chief recommends "offensive military operation" in Mali

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Wednesday recommended that the Security Council approve an African Union peace enforcement mission be deployed to combat Islamist extremists in northern Mali, but did not offer financial support from the world body.

Diplomats and U.N. officials say that peace enforcement missions allow the use of lethal force in serious combat situations, while peacekeeping operations are intended to support and monitor an already existing ceasefire.

The last U.N.-led peace enforcement mission approved by the 15-nation Security Council was in Somalia in the early 1990s when 18 U.S. troops were killed in the "Black Hawk Down" incident, an event that led to U.S. withdrawal of combat troops from U.N.-commanded peacekeeping operations.

Ban's cautiously worded recommendation made clear that the world body is still wary of getting back into the peace-enforcement business. He said that the council should ensure that political, human rights, training and operational benchmarks be met before any military offensive commences.

As planning for the mission continues, Ban said the 15-nation council could "authorize member states of the African Union to establish AFISMA for an initial period of one year, comprising 3,300 (international) personnel to take all necessary measures to assist the Malian authorities."

AFISMA is the proposed acronym for the U.N.-mandated African force in Mali.

"Fundamental questions on how the force would be led, sustained, trained, equipped and financed remain unanswered," Ban said. "Plans for both the international force and the Malian security and defense forces need to be developed further."

One Security Council diplomat was furious at Ban's recommendation against granting the AU request for U.N. funding for the operation, which U.N. diplomats estimate will cost $300 million to $500 million.

"I think it's quite insulting to a number of countries, in particular to some AU countries," a Security Council diplomat said on condition of anonymity.

Another diplomat said the council was under no obligation to follow Ban's recommendations, although he added that it might be hard to secure a majority in favor of overriding them in order to provide U.N. funding to an AU operation in Mali.

Ban suggested that the funding for the initial military combat operations could be through "voluntary or bilateral contributions" - which diplomats said meant European Union member states would be asked to cover costs.

"TARGETED MILITARY OPERATIONS"

The fall of Mali's north to Islamists, including AQIM, al Qaeda's North African wing, has carved out a safe haven for militants and international organized crime, U.N. officials say, stirring fears of attacks in West Africa and in Europe.

African leaders are seeking a U.N. mandate to send a mainly West African force to rebuild Mali's army and back operations to win back the occupied desert zones.

Ban expressed reservations about the United Nations' capacity to take on "terrorists and affiliated groups."

"Targeted military operations may be required to dislodge them from northern Mali, in which case member states may decide to directly support the military activity needed to combat these groups," Ban said.

He added that once major combat operations the council could consider authorizing an actual U.N. peacekeeping mission.

Council diplomats said that could take the form of special forces units from individual U.N. member states.

Diplomats say they want to adopt a resolution authorizing the mission before the end of the year.

African officials estimate there are 2,500-3,000 core fighters amongst the Islamists coming from Africa, Europe and Asia. The U.S. estimates the hard-core contingent of Islamists much lower at between 800 and 1,200. The conflict has forced 400,000 Malians to flee their homes.

Regional powerhouse Algeria says it prefers a negotiated solution.

U.N. diplomats and officials say the Algerians are concerned that a military offensive against the Islamists in northern Mali could push them across the border into Algeria, though Algiers has indicated its cautious support for the undertaking.

Last week former Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi, the U.N. envoy to the troubled Sahel region, which includes Mali, ruled out imminent action, saying it would not be possible before September or October next year.

The European Union is planning to send 200 troops to Mali to help with training. But like the United States and former colonial power France, which is the keenest of Western nations for military action, Brussels has ruled out a combat role.

West Africa regional bloc ECOWAS agreed this month to commit the 3,300 troops for the international force. The troops would mostly come from Nigeria, Niger and Burkina Faso, but other West African countries and two or three non-African states may also contribute, said Ivory Coast President Alassane Outtara.

Once viewed as an example of progress towards democracy in Africa, Mali fell into chaos after a coup in March that toppled the president and left a power vacuum that was quickly exploited by rebels to take over the north.

Social Media Marketing: 4 Warning Signs That You're Wasting Money

wasting money with social mediaOnly a few years ago, it seemed that the internet had reached a level of stability and acceptance by most.? While HTML and other internet technologies continued to improve, usage pattern seemed to be fairly reliable.? This changed with the advent of social media, and social media marketing now represents a huge opportunity for business if done right.

Those who want to reach an online audience must use social media as part of their efforts.? However, social media marketing must be used in an effective manner.? Not knowing how to effectively use social media seems to be the biggest complaint of most business owners.? Their number one complaint:? ?It?s a waste of money.?? Well, here are four clear signs that your social media campaign is wasting money.

Sign #1 ? The number of social media account followers remains constant or low.

The main benefit of social media is its ability to exponentially expose your brand and message to the masses in a short period of time.? Attention breeds more attention, and those who use social media marketing effectively will want to see their number of followers grow at a steady pace.? Slow growth is perfectly acceptable if you?re a small local business, but no growth is a sign that a campaign is failing.? If the campaign is unable to grow each day, it is time to reconsider one?s activities.

Sign #2 ? The level of social engagement and interaction fails to increase

The purpose of social media is to provide users with a two-way means of communication.? Social media is not a one way broadcast platform to merely shout your business message out to the world (although, many use it incorrectly this way).? If the level of fan/follower engagement is stagnant or is dropping, this can be a sign that your marketing efforts are failing to reach out to the right audience.? Fortunately, there are number of techniques that can be used to target the right audience and increase follower engagement, but it is first necessary to analyze the current level of engagement and examine where the campaign is hitting the mark and missing the mark.

Sign #3 ? Not building an email list through your social media marketing efforts.

It is important to remember that you don?t control social media platforms.? Some call them unstable.? Those platforms we use in social media today could be gone tomorrow (or at least change).? Because of this, it is important to constantly work on growing your email list.? You control the email list regardless if the platform changes or goes away.? Fan/Followers are great first step, but it is important to contact them through multiple channels, such as email.? If the number of fans/followers is growing but you?re not building a solid email database behind the scenes, this would be a sign that you?re wasting money on your social media efforts.

Sign #4 ? Not change in company revenue and profits.

Never forget that the purpose of running a social media campaign is to make money in the end.? Now, where the confusion lies with most business owners is that they?re used to running or paying for some direct form of advertising and seeing an immediate increase in interest or purchase activity. This is not the way social media works.? Social media marketing used effectively expands the reach of your brand, introduces you to an audience that may not be ready for your products or services today but may in the future and allows this audience to build up a level of trust with who you are as a company.? In the end though, you must take account to whether your campaign if producing revenue.? Last I checked, profits are still the ultimate goal.? If the campaign is effective at engaging users, reaching new followers and collecting email addresses but still fails to make a profit, something is definitely wrong and it?s time to consider a change to the strategy.

Conclusion

A huge mistake business owners make in starting to market their business on social media is they think they can just hire their teenage child, a young college kid or perhaps a stay at home parent who doesn?t have anything to do while the kids are in school to run their social campaign.? They put no thought into what you want the campaign to do.

You know why?? They don?t want to deal with it.? They don?t want the hassle and they feel pressured to do it but won?t take the time to really understand how social media can explode their business if done properly.

If that?s you don?t worry, no one is going to know that you?re reading this but you :) .? Seriously though, if you feel that you?ve been wasting money in social media or you have been that business owner who has said to themselves, ?I don?t want to deal with it but I know it?s important? then we may be able to help.? Complete the form below for a no hassle, no obligation consultation that will enlighten you to the mistakes you may be making and how you can start making money with social media.? Platforms may continue to change but selling through social media is not a fad.? It?s a change to the fiber of our business culture.? Embrace it and profit from it.? We can help.? Fill out the form below now and we?ll be in touch.

Texas records raise question about warning before train crash

SAN ANGELO, Texas (Reuters) - The Texas railroad crossing where four U.S. military veterans were killed this month during a parade was designed to give 30 seconds warning but gave only 20, according to state records and federal investigators.

Sixteen other people were injured when a train slammed into a parade float in Midland, Texas, on November 15 at the start of a weekend of festivities to honor veterans wounded in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.

Four of those wounded have sued Union Pacific, the operator of the train, and Smith Industries, the company which owns the truck that pulled the trailer the veterans were riding on for the parade.

The Texas Department of Transportation released on Wednesday records from 1992 that said the intersection known as Garfield in the southern part of the oil town had been designed to give at least 30 seconds of warning and possibly more.

Investigators with the National Transportation Safety Board said the warning bells began sounding and lights flashed at the intersection 20 seconds before the train arrived at more than 60 miles per hour (97 km per hour).

The parade float, one of two, was an open trailer hauled by a semi-truck donated from Midland-based Smith Industries. The float had been pulling 12 war-wounded veterans and their wives.

The cab made it across the intersection but the train hit the open float.

Two attorneys specializing in train crash lawsuits, Kevin Glasheen of Lubbock and Bob Pottroff of Manhattan, Kansas, are representing the four victims of the train crash, two veterans and their wives.

"Ten seconds, even five seconds, would've made a difference," Glasheen said.

The lawsuit says that Union Pacific failed to provide a safe crossing or a proper warning of an approaching train. It also says the truck driver employed by Smith Industries who drove the cab pulling the float failed to exercise reasonable care for his passengers.

Union Pacific said on Thursday the records released by the state of Texas are outdated.

"Documents from 20 and 30 years ago do not reflect current conditions at the Garfield crossing," said spokeswoman Raquel Espinoza.

She said preliminary findings of a federal government investigation showed that the signal system met federal requirements.

Union Pacific has blamed the driver of the truck pulling the float for the accident. The government investigation continues.

Dems slam GOP immigration bill as two-faced ? MSNBC

Updated 3:01 p.m.

After being walloped by Latino voters in the election, the Republican Party?s first?conciliatory?immigration bill?may result in the same?Congressional gridlock that has stalled?previous attempts at reform. Moreover, it is directed at a small sliver U.S. immigrants, calling into question the seriousness of the GOP.

The House will vote on the Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM)?Jobs Act later this week, a?bill that?would give visas to foreigners with high-tech degrees from American universities, while eliminating a program that offers visas to poorer immigrants through a lottery to underrepresented countries.

An earlier version of bill was defeated in the House in September after 80% of Democrats voted against it. At the time,?the House?s Hispanic Caucus, Congressional Black Caucus and Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus all came out against it.

However, this version of the bill is expected to include?a family-friendly provision that would allow the families of legal immigrants, those with green cards, to wait for their own visas within the United States, thus reuniting spouses and children. The AP put the impact at 322,000 husbands, wives, and children who are currently waiting to join a family member in the United States.

Yet, House Democrats say the bill is an effort to appear more pro-immigration, particularly as few expect it to pass in the Senate. ?It is not very much to sweeten the pot for Democrats,? one Democratic House staffer told MSNBC.com.

The bill ?is more about politics and optics for the Republicans than about anything substantive,? Rep. Luis Gutierrez, the chair of the Immigration Task Force of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus told MSNBC.com. ?Republicans are more interested in killing the Diversity Visa program, which goes mostly to immigrants from Africa, than in creating a program for science and tech graduates.?

The STEM bill offers 55,000 visas to high-tech graduates of American universities and their families. It would function by eliminating the Diversity Visa program, an initiative that gives visas to immigrants from countries?typically in Africa and Latin America?with low rates of U.S. immigration and reallocating those visas into the STEM program.

?We don?t really fix the problem by having a zero-sum approach.? Bob Sakaniwa, the associate director of advocacy at the American Immigration Lawyers Association, explained. ?They don?t have enough green cards for legitimate demand.?

Rep. Lamar Smith, the Republican from Texas who sponsored the bill, said that the Diversity Visa program ?invites fraud and is a threat to our national security.? By attracting science and math doctoral graduates, Smith?argued the STEM bill would further economic progress.

?We cannot afford to educate these foreign graduates in the U.S. and then send them back home to work for our competitors,? he said in a statement to MSNBC.com.

Sakaniwa said that while there have been issues and reported security loopholes with the Diversity Visa Program, it doesn?t mean the entire program should be scrapped: ?It?s one thing to try and fix flaws in the system, it?s another thing to throw out the baby with the bath water,? he said.

House Democrats?claimed the re-introduction of the bill with the new family-friendly concession?is a last-ditch effort to appear more pro-immigration, but worry that it signals continued anti-immigration views that could obstruct comprehensive reform in the New Year.

Rep. Zoe Lofgren, the top Democrat on the House Immigration Subcommittee, introduced a competing bill, which she called the ?Attracting the Best and the Brightest? act, that would maintain the Diversity Visa program as well as add STEM visas.

?Republicans know they have an anti-immigrant image problem, yet, unfortunately, they are proceeding with the Smith bill to pretend they?re pro-immigrant, even though it is a divisive bill that actually reduces legal immigration,? Lofgren said.

Democratic staffers say the bill may reduce immigration numbers?because the number of STEM graduates seeking visas could fluctuate over time. The bill allows unused visas to roll over for the first four years, but after that, unused visas would disappear. Other portions of immigration law allow unused visas in programs to roll over into other programs, helping to meet demand.

Rep. Gutierrez also sees a party-wide opposition to immigration.

?The Republicans are still looking at immigration through the old lens that legal immigration is a problem that must be eliminated or never increased,? he said. ?We don?t need to eliminate immigration for one group to allow immigration for another, we can and will reform immigration so that we have a controlled and legal flow that benefits the economy and keeps families together. But that is not what the Republicans are doing this week.?

Senate Republicans also tried on immigration reform proposals for?size,?introducing a limited version of the DREAM Act Tuesday. That competing bill, introduced by outgoing Sens. John Kyl and Kay Bailey Hutchison,?would not put undocumented students on a path to citizenship as the Democratic version would do, instead allowing students to apply for extended visas at three different junctures,??enabling them to stay in the country while they navigate existing channels to citizenship.

Correction: An earlier version of this story implied the family-friendly provision applied only to immigrants with?high-tech degrees, those who fall under the STEM model. In fact, the new provision is broader than that and applies to families of green card holders who are currently waiting outside the U.S. to be rejoined with their family member.

Insurance News - "Spiritual" Estate Planning Passes On Values

DONNA GEHRKE-WHITE; BY DONNA GEHRKE-WHITE | THE (FORT LAUDERDALE, FLA.) SUN SENTINEL

"Spiritual" estate planning - deciding how to pass down money based on values - is becoming a hot topic for baby boomers who want to make sure their values are passed along with their money, financial planners say.

Bequests to charities are up 19 percent in a year, according to Charity Navigator, a nonprofit that monitors charities. But it goes beyond leaving money to a favorite group, said South Florida attorney Alice Reiter- Feld.

"It's leaving money with a purpose," she said.

That extends into deciding how to give money - or not - to family members, Feld said.

Those drawing up an estate plan first have to decide who is included among their kin, in this age of blended families and second or third marriages, Feld said.

"With all the kinds of families these days, there's no simple answer," Feld said.

Other thorny questions from today's complicated relationships: Should couples in a relationship, for example, make sure their children from a previous marriage get their own bequests - separate from the new spouse?

Yes, Feld recommends.

A surviving stepparent may give the couple's possessions to his or her children. Stepchildren can then get passed over - unless estate planning leaves them a specific amount, Feld said.

In setting up a will, parents also need to consider: "Have you passed on your financial values to kids?" Feld said she asks clients. "Sometimes, I have to send them home to think about it."

Some retirees who believe in frugality may decide to leave money in a trust to guarantee that free-spending kids - or their spouses - won't squander it all, she said.

Putting money in a trust for surviving relatives can protect it from any creditors or even an ex-spouse, Feld said.

"It's more control beyond the grave," added Mari Adam, a Boca Raton, Fla., financial planner who has seen more clients wanting to have a say in how their kin spend their inheritances.

A growing number of parents are deciding not to give equal amounts to their surviving children, financial planners say. Rather, some feel morally responsible in caring for less well-off children, said Ben Tobias, a Plantation, Fla., financial planner.

Learn more about our wide range of solutions

If one of their children is wealthy, for example, some parents may decide they need to give more of an inheritance to an adult son or daughter who is less well-off or who has a special-needs child, Tobias said.

"For whatever reason, they are opposed to doing it equally," Tobias said.

Feld has seen the same trend, although she says children should be treated equally.

If mothers or fathers are going to leave more money to one child, then they need to communicate that before they pass away, she said.

Tobias agreed. It's a matter of keeping peace in the family, he said.

Parents especially "should sit down with a child who is going to be given less and explain the reasons," Tobias recommended.

"Otherwise, real problems may develop," he said. "I've seen deep resentment develop."

Obama says debt-cutting deal can be reached soon

(AP) ? President Barack Obama said Wednesday he believes that members of both parties can reach a "framework" on a debt-cutting deal before Christmas, making his case with a mix of optimism and pressure on congressional Republicans to keep tax rates from rising on the middle class.

Obama, pushing ahead with his campaign to increase revenue by hiking taxes on wealthier Americans, was joined by about a dozen middle-class Americans at a White House event in the midst of negotiation on how to avoid a so-called fiscal cliff at year's end when across-the-board tax hikes and steep spending cuts kick in.

"I am ready and able and willing and excited to go ahead and get this issue resolved in bipartisan fashion so that American families, American businesses have some certainty going into next year," Obama said.

He took special note of reports that some Republicans have expressed a willingness to extend the current expiring tax rates for households earning less than $250,000. Conservative Oklahoma GOP Rep. Tom Cole told GOP colleagues in a private meeting on Tuesday that it's better to extend tax cuts for 98 percent of taxpayers than engage in a prolonged fight that risks increasing taxes on everyone. Cole is a longtime GOP loyalist and a confidant of House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio.

"I'm glad to see, if you've been reading the papers lately, that more and more Republicans in Congress seem to be agreeing with this idea that we should have a balanced approach," Obama said, noting that the Senate has already passed legislation to extend current rates to those middle class taxpayers.

"The Democrats in the House are ready to vote for that same bill today," he said. "If we can get a few House Republicans to agree as well, I'll sign this bill as soon as Congress sends it my way. I've got to repeat: I've got a pen. I'm ready to sign it."

He made an appeal to the public to pressure Congress, arguing that similar efforts late last year to extend a payroll tax cut resulted in congressional passage.

"When the American people speak loudly enough, lo and behold, Congress listens," he said.

While expressing confidence that he and Congress could strike a bargain for a "framework in the coming weeks,"

Obama says we need to "approach this problem with the middle-class in mind."

The president is urging the public to pressure Congress through social media, pointing to (hashtag)My2K on Twitter ? a reference to the estimated $2,200 tax increase a typical middle-class family of four would see if the Bush tax cuts expire.

The president is also meeting with corporate executives at the White House on Wednesday and then traveling to Pennsylvania on Friday to push for upper income bracket earners to pay higher tax rates. It's part of a campaign to pressure Republicans in Congress to support raising taxes on the wealthy.

Atom smasher creates new kind of matter

Collisions between particles inside the Large Hadron Collider atom smasher have created what looks like a new form of matter.

The new kind of matter is called color-glass condensate, and is a liquidlike wave of gluons, which are elementary particles related to the strong force that sticks quarks together inside protons and neutrons (hence they are like "glue").

Scientists didn't expect this kind of matter would result from the type of particle collisions going on at the Large Hadron Collider at the time. However, it may explain some odd behavior seen inside the machine, which is a giant loop where particles race around underneath Switzerland and France.

When scientists sped up protons (one of the building blocks of atoms) and lead ions (lead atoms, which contain 82 protons each, stripped of their electrons), and crashed them into each other, the resulting explosions liquefied those particles and gave rise to new particles in their wake. Most of these new particles, as expected, fly off in all directions at close to the speed of light. [ Photos: The World's Largest Atom Smasher (LHC) ]

But recently scientists noticed that some pairs of particles were flying off from the collision point in correlated directions.

"Somehow they fly at the same direction even though it's not clear how they can communicate their direction with one another. That has surprised many people, including us," MIT physicist Gunther Roland, whose group led the analysis of the collision data along with Wei Li of Rice University, said in a statement.

A similar flight pattern is seen when two heavy particles, such as lead and lead, crash into each other. In this case, the collisions create what's called quark-gluon plasma ? a superhot soup of particles similar to the state of the universe just after the Big Bang. This soup can sweep particles in the same direction, explaining why their flight directions would be correlated.

But quark-gluon plasma isn't possible with lead-proton collisions, like the ones in the new study. Now researchers think a different state of matter, the color-glass condensate, may act in a similar way. The color-glass condensate's dense swarm of gluons may also sweep particles off in the same direction, suggested Brookhaven National Laboratory physicist Raju Venugopalan, who first predicted the substance, which may also be seen after proton-proton collisions.

The mechanism may depend on a weird quirk of particles called quantum entanglement. Two particles can be entangled so that they retain a connection even after they are separated, and an action on one reverberates on the other.

    4. Bulgaria claims to find Europe's oldest town

Entangled gluons in the color-glass condensate could explain how particles flying away from the collision point might share information about their flight direction with each other, Venugopalan said.

The intriguing phenomenon was not expected to result from the LHC's run of proton-lead collisions, which was meant to serve as a reference point for comparison to other types of collisions.

"You don't expect quark-gluon plasma effects" with lead-proton collisions, Roland said. "It was supposed to be sort of a reference run ? a run in which you can study background effects and then subtract them from the effects that you see in lead-lead collisions."

The findings will be detailed in an upcoming issue of the journal Physical Review B.

Luke Rockhold off Strikeforce event with wrist injury

Strikeforce: Champions just took another hit. The Jan. 12 event, which is rumored to be Strikeforce's last, lost Luke Rockhold to injury. The middleweight champion has a wrist injury and had to withdraw from his bout with Lorenz Larkin.

Larkin was apparently not happy about Rockhold's decision to withdraw, because he sent several tweets ripping Rockhold.

The two were supposed to meet at the Nov. 3 Strikeforce event. Rockhold withdrew from that bout with a wrist injury, and the event was scrapped.

The Rockhold injury is another blow to Strikeforce. They canceled event in September and November, leading to rumors about their demise. Having a event called "Champions" without many champions doesn't inspire much confident about their future.

Thyroid Surgery: What to Expect ~ Health Fitness & Beauty Secrets ...

Thyroid Surgery: What to Expect ~ Health Fitness & Beauty Secrets: Your Guide For Better Health

Thyroid Surgery: What to Expect

Thyroid surgery is the primary treatment for thyroid cancer, thyroid nodules and hyperthyroidism.? During the procedure, all or part of the butterfly-shaped thyroid gland located at the front of the throat is carefully removed.? Here, we'll take a closer look at what the procedure involves, plus we will discuss ways your body may change after thyroid surgery.

About Thyroid Surgery

Surgery is normally used to treat thyroid problems in a number of cases.? For instance, if your doctor has diagnosed you with thyroid cancer or if it is suspected that thyroid cancer is developing, you are a likely candidate for thyroid surgery.? In addition, if you have a benign thyroid nodule that has begun to interfere with swallowing or breathing, or if you have a fluid filled thyroid nodule which returns after having been drained more than once, you are a candidate for surgery.? Thyroid surgery is also prescribed for hyperthyroidism and Graves Disease which does not respond to radioactive iodine or medications.

During thyroid surgery, you may have your entire thyroid gland removed, or you may need to have only a portion of your thyroid removed.? If you require a total thyroidectomy, the entire gland, along with the lymph nodes surrounding it will be removed.?

If you require a thyroid lobectomy, either with or without an isthmectomy, only the affected lobe will be removed.? With an isthmectomy, the isthmus, which is the band of tissue that connects the two lobes, will be removed as well.? Before finishing surgery, the surgeon will have the removed tissue analyzed to determine whether cancer is present.? If cancer is present within the cells, the surgeon will remove the remainder of the thyroid.? This is called a completion thyroidectomy.

In cases of hyperthyroidism caused by Graves Disease, a subtotal thyroidectomy will be performed.? In this thyroid surgery, one complete lobe, part of the second lobe, and the isthmus will be removed.

Thyroid surgery once required long incisions which completely opened the neck; today, many surgeons are conducting endoscopic thyroidectomies using a number of small incisions which allow surgical instruments and a tiny camera to be inserted into the surgical site.? Not only does this reduce the appearance of scars post-surgery, it also reduces recovery time and produces less pain than standard thyroidectomies do.

As with most modern surgeries, thyroid surgery is generally safe.? There are some complications which may occur due to the surgery, including a changed voice or persistent hoarseness brought on by nerve damage.? The best way to avoid this is to select an experienced surgeon; in addition, those having lobectomies rather than complete thyroidectomies are at lower risk for speech difficulties.

If the parathyroid glands are damaged or mistakenly removed during a total thyroidectomy, then hypoparathyroidism can result.? This is not a common problem encountered in patients having lobectomies, and again, the more experience a surgeon has, the less risk there is of accidental parathyroid gland removal.

Thyroid surgery patients are sometimes seen on an outpatient basis; most remain in the hospital for a day or two after surgery.

Additional Considerations

If you must undergo a total thyroidectomy, you will need to take synthetic thyroid hormone; this can also occur if you have a subtotal thyroidectomy or a lobectomy.

If you have been diagnosed with thyroid cancer and have undergone thyroid surgery, you will more than likely require treatment with radioactive iodine after the surgery, to ensure that all the cancer cells and thyroid tissue are gone.?

If you have undergone thyroid surgery for hyperthyroidism, you may have low calcium levels; in this case, you will need to take calcium supplements.?
Be sure to have a discussion with your doctor regarding any concerns you may have surrounding thyroid surgery.? While the risk for complications is present, most patients go on to enjoy life better than they have in many years, once thyroid surgery is successfully completed.?

Baby boomers turn to college to boost job skills | Fifty Plus Advocates

By Encarnacion Pylecolumbus

OHIO ?

Steve Newman never expected to be going back to college in his 50s to train for a new job.

But the 51-year-old also never expected to get laid off three years ago after 25 years as a civil engineer.

?Fortunately, my wife and I had been making provisions for an undefined emergency since the middle of the previous summer, so we were not without resources,? Newman said.

With high unemployment, low home values and downsized retirement accounts, hundreds of thousands of baby boomers are turning to college to boost their job skills. The number of students ages 50 to 64 increased 17 percent nationwide between fall 2007 and fall 2009, according to the latest data available from the National Center for Education Statistics.

The growth has been even more dramatic at Columbus State Community College. The number of students age 50 and older increased more than 81 percent, to 1,506 students, between fall 2007 and fall last year. That age group is the fastest growing population at the school.

?It used to be that many older adults came to college to help pass the time during their retirement and to enrich their lives,? said Chandra Bell, a counselor and career-assistance coordinator at Columbus State. But people are now coming back ?because they have lost their jobs, need new skills to keep their jobs or are planning a new career because they can?t afford to retire as planned,? Bell said.

With 78 million baby boomers entering their retirement years, the country needs more of these experienced workers to stay in the workforce longer, even in part-time positions, officials said.

?Keeping older workers engaged in the labor force is vital for the continued economic growth of our region,? said Bill LaFayette, a Columbus economist and owner of the consulting firm Regionomics.

The labor force growth rate has already been declining and is projected to slow to a crawl between 2020 and 2025 because of the exodus of baby boomers, he said.

With people living longer, healthier lives, there is also a new demand for programs designed to train the over-50 population, said Celia Crossley, a career strategist and managing partner of Crosworks.

Last year, about 36 percent of workers said they expected to keep working past age 65, compared with 20 percent in 2001, according to the Employee Benefit Research Institute (EBRI).

?It?s a different world today where 50 to 70 is considered the new ?middle age,? ? Crossley said.

Martha Harrison, 52, of Powell started playing with the idea of going back to college in 2005 after more than 20 years as a preschool teacher. She was motivated by two primary factors: money and a desire to get a counseling degree to help children deal with their increasingly complicated home lives.

?Preschool teachers barely make above minimum wage, which makes no sense when you think about taking care of someone?s most-valuable asset,? Harrison said.

She tried a few online psychology classes with a for-profit college in 2005 but didn?t really get started on her education until she enrolled at Columbus State?s Delaware campus in fall 2010. Harrison has enjoyed school so much she wants to transfer to Ohio State to work on a bachelor?s degree and eventually earn a master?s so she can become a school counselor. She isn?t daunted by her age.

?The way I look at it, people my age, we have maybe 25 or more years left of working in us, especially in something that we enjoy,? she said.

When Newman lost his job, he and his wife, Deb, who is a stay-at-home mom, had saved about half of what they thought they might need to sustain themselves for about six months with no other income.

?We were glad to have made such decisions, despite not having had time to complete our preparation,? he said.

Through friends, Newman immediately landed a job as a marketing director for a men?s legwear company in Granville. He took a job 11 months later as a traffic engineer for the Ohio Department of Transportation.

But neither worked out long term. So the father of four signed up for a free three-week program at Columbus State that was created to train dislocated workers in logistics ? the movement and storage of goods from the beginning to the end of a supply chain.

After the training, Newman got a job as an inventory specialist at ODW Logistics Inc. in Columbus. He then enrolled in a three-quarter-long online certificate program at Columbus State, which helped him move to a more-advanced job at the pharmaceutical company of Boehringer Ingelheim Roxane Inc.

Even though Newman had earned a bachelor?s degree from Ohio State in 1984, going back to college was challenging, he said.

?In the past 13 days, I?ve had to read seven chapters, take nine quizzes, solve four sets of problems, take one midterm and two finals ? and that doesn?t even count working 40 hours and spending time with my family.?

Newman is just thankful for a second chance, even though he?s making $60,000 a year less than his peak salary as a civil engineer. He?s also looking forward to working his way up in what he hopes turns out to be a long, successful second career.

?Getting laid off was quite a blow,? he said. ?But finding something else to go after and making strides to move ahead has me feeling good again.? ? AP

Galapagos Tortoise 'Lonesome George' may have had relatives after all

Genetic samples showed that some tortoises recently DNA tested were hybrids that had a parent like Lonesome George from the subspecies Chelonoidis abingdoni.

By Megan Gannon,?LiveScience News Editor / November 26, 2012

A giant tortoise named 'Lonesome George' is seen in the Galapagos islands, an archipelago off Ecuador's Pacific coast in 2008. Lonesome George, the late reptile prince of the Galapagos Islands, may be dead, but scientists now say he may not be the last giant tortoise of his species after all.

The death of Gal?pagos tortoise Lonesome George this summer was thought to mark the extinction of a subspecies, but a new study hints that the reptile may not have been the last of his kind after all.

Researchers from Yale University recently trekked to the northern tip of Isabella Island, the largest of the Gal?pagos, and collected DNA from more than 1,600?giant tortoises. The genetic samples showed that 17 of these tortoises were hybrids that had a parent like?Lonesome George?from the subspecies?Chelonoidis abingdoni.

What's more, five of those hybrids were juveniles, suggesting purebred?C. abingdoni?tortoises may still be roaming a remote part of the island.

"Our goal is to go back this spring to look for surviving individuals of this species and to collect hybrids," Yale ecology researcher Gisella Caccone said in a statement. "We hope that with a selective breeding program, we can reintroduce this tortoise species to its native home."

But even if examples of?C. abingdoni?are found on Isabella Island, how did they get there? Lonesome George's species is native to?Pinta Island, 37 miles (60 kilometers) across the seas from the Volcano Wolf area on Isabella Island where the hybrid samples were collected.

These tortoises are massive, reaching nearly 900 pounds (408 kilograms) and almost 6 feet (1.8 meters) in length, and the researchers don't think ocean currents carried them between the islands. The team does suspect, however, that 19th-century sailors did.

Volcano Wolf is nearby Banks Bay, where naval officers and whalers marooned giant tortoises picked up from other islands after they were no longer needed for food. Researchers have previously found other hybrid turtles in the region with genetic ancestry of another tortoise,?C. elephantopus, which was thought to be lost. This species was native to Floreana Island, where it was hunted to extinction some 150 years ago. But the new evidence suggests several members must have been brought to Isabella Island, where they mated with?C. becki?tortoises.

The new findings are detailed in the journal Biological Conservation.

Proper Tea: Dim Sum Style - Dining Out - Schwabe Williamson & Wyatt

This month?s ?Property? theme inspired the Dining Out team to think of ?proper tea,? as in British high tea, and that led us to what we imagined is the Chinese version of proper tea ? dim sum. Since we have been waiting for an opportunity to review dim sum for quite some time, we grabbed this semantic sleight of hand and, tally-ho, we?re off on this month?s review.

Eating dim sum at a restaurant is known in Cantonese as going to ?drink tea? (yum cha). Dim sum originated in China hundreds of years ago and is associated with tea tasting or drinking tea, which served as a brief and quiet respite for travelers on the Silk Road. Legend has it that it was considered inappropriate to serve food with tea as it might lead to excessive weight gain.

Later, it was discovered that tea aided digestion, so teahouses began serving various small items of food. Dim sum means ?touch the heart? or ?a little bit of heart,? and was originally intended to be a light snack. What was once a quiet, afternoon pastime has developed into a bustling and boisterous meal we now call dim sum.

Dim sum is best described as a rolling buffet. Instead of filling your plate at the buffet table, the buffet tables come to you. Each selection is served as small or bite-size portions, often presented in metal, steam containers or on plates with three to four pieces per serving.

The dishes are placed in the center of the table, usually on a lazy Susan, making it easy to pass the food to each diner. Dim sum can be served almost any time; however, it is typically served from mid-morning to mid-afternoon.

Tea is an important part of the meal. Proper tea etiquette includes a gentle finger tap on the table in front of your tea cup, thanking the server, when your cup is filled for you. The person closest to the teapot pours the tea. If you are pouring tea, you should fill everyone else?s cup before pouring your own.

If the teapot needs to be refilled, lift and tilt the lid diagonally into the top of the pot or balance it on the top of the pot by the handle. The reason teacups don?t have handles is that if the teacup is too hot to hold with your fingers, then it is too hot to drink. Be warned.

If you have never tried dim sum, don?t hesitate to take the plunge. Dim sum is a dining experience that is particularly conducive to accommodating groups (and a favorite outing in our office). Besides, the more people you have, the more selections of dim sum you can taste.

So, sit down and start ordering dishes or pointing at food that looks good as it rolls by. Ask questions. Don?t be shy. And try to avoid the temptation of spinning the lazy Susan simply for fun.

The greater Seattle area boasts many options for dim sum. The following are some of our favorite haunts.

House of Hong (409 Eighth Ave. S., Seattle; 622-7997; houseofhong.com) is a big and bustling restaurant in the International District serving many diners every day. On holidays and at busy times, the wait can be long; arriving early may avoid the delay.

The carts move quickly and rapidly descend upon a table once everyone is seated. At times, it takes a conscious effort to set the dining pace so that everything isn?t ordered at once and lunch over in less than 10 minutes.

A favorite dish is the honey walnut shrimp, not always offered on the carts. We automatically ask if it will be served and place a special order if need be. Other standouts are ha gow (shrimp dumplings), steamed hum bau (buns with barbecued pork filling) and rice noodles. We usually let the phoenix claws (chicken feet) roll on by.

The food is particularly fresh and tasty, and the tea always hot and the pot full. Tradition requires taking turns reading our fortunes aloud before eating the cookies.

O?Asian Kitchen (800 Fifth Ave., Seattle; 264-1789; oasiankitchen.com). A large group of us from the office sauntered south on Fifth Avenue a few weeks ago to O?Asian, almost hidden on the plaza of the 5th Avenue Building. The decor is modern, quieter and more subdued than many dim sum restaurants.

Within minutes, we were seated at a large, round table with a lazy Susan (and who doesn?t love that), as wait staff approached the table with carts of delectables. We ordered a variety of items. Our favorites included the barbecue pork, green beans, shrimp dump?lings, noodles and tofu.

We appreciated that the items were not overly seasoned or salty, and were fresh and hot. One person in our group couldn?t seem to stop ordering the sweet, bean paste desserts. We finished, happy and full, and headed back to the office 45 minutes later ? with leftovers.

Din Tai Fung (700 Bellevue Way NE No. 280, Bellevue; 425-698-1095; dintaifungusa.com). The second floor of Lincoln Square in downtown Bellevue is home to one of only two North American locations of the celebrated Din Tai Fung chain of restaurants (the other is L.A.). This chain, which started in Taiwan in 1969, serves classic, Chinese, street stall food in an upscale, stylish setting.

The house specialty is xiao long bao or ?little dragon buns? ? a round bun about the size of a plum, with a flour-skin wrapping, usually filled with a mixture containing pork. For some reason, the Chinese particularly admire xiao long bao that contain not only a solid filling, but also a tablespoon of fragrant broth that squirts out when you bite into the bun. This is why it is best eaten with both chopsticks and a soup spoon.

Take our advice and order the mixed pork and crab filling; you won?t regret it. Din Tai Fung also serves dumplings with several varieties of fillings ? pork, fish, shrimp and chicken ? as well as noodles, fried rice and zhong-z (sticky rice wrapped in a bamboo leaf).

Din Tai Fung does not take reservations. If you arrive any time close to a recognized meal time, you will wait for a table. While you wait, you can watch the kitchen staff making dumplings and xiao long bao by hand, or wander around the shops in Lincoln Square. Before you resign yourself to a long wait, check out the bar area, which has open seating and a full menu.

Sun Ya Seafood Restaurant (605 Seventh Ave. S., Seattle; 623-1670; sun-ya.cwok.com) has long been one of our favorites, especially for the shrimp ball (ha gow). Sun Ya has the advantage of its own parking lot, which is fairly unusual in the International District, but it is small, so get there early if you want to take advantage of it.

Even full, the restaurant still feels relaxed and is not too loud. The carts keep rolling by with ever more selections to choose from. The variety offered seems to increase as the day goes on, and we always find something we have never seen before; this time we sampled a shrimp chive cake for the first time ? we will be ordering it again next time.

Sun Ya is our go-to place for the wide variety, including a reasonable number of vegetarian options (the fresh green beans were very good) and especially for the seafood dim sum. And, of course, we always get the fresh egg tart to finish.
