NEW YORK/WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Home prices rose for the fourth month in a row in May, suggesting the recovery in the housing market continued to gain traction, even as the broader economy wobbles.
Other data on Tuesday showed consumer confidence unexpectedly rose in July but spending fell in June for the first time in nearly a year as Americans saved more.
The S&P/Case-Shiller composite index of 20 metropolitan areas gained 0.9 percent in May from April on a seasonally adjusted basis, topping economists' expectations for a 0.5 percent gain.
The housing market, which collapsed during the 2007-2009 recession, has been a relative bright spot in the economy this year, although it remains hobbled by tight mortgage availability and on-going foreclosures.
"Real estate continues to show improvement off the bottom. That's one of the few encouraging signs we've seen," said Subodh Kumar, an investment strategist at Subodh Kumar & Associates in Toronto.
On a non-seasonally adjusted basis, prices fared even better, jumping 2.2 percent. Compared to a year ago, price declines moderated to slip 0.7 percent, the smallest drop since the last time year-over-year prices rose in September 2010.
Economists cautioned prices could weaken again once the traditionally strong spring and summer buying season is over.
"The most likely scenario is that home prices will zigzag over the coming months, rising during the selling season, and slipping in the fall," said Michelle Valverde, U.S. economist at IHS Global Insight.
Housing makes up a smaller share of the economy than before the recession and can provide only a limited lift to the broader recovery, which has hit a soft patch in the wake of the euro zone debt crisis and a struggling domestic labor market.
The Labor Department is scheduled to release its employment report for July on Friday, with non-farm payrolls expected to rise a modest 100,000, according to a Reuters poll.
Pressure is rising on the Federal Reserve to do more to help the sputtering U.S. economy as policymakers at the central bank start a two-day meeting on Tuesday.
No major policy change is expected to be announced on Wednesday although some economists think the Fed could push further into the future its conditional pledge to keep rates near zero through late 2014.
Reaction to the data was muted in financial markets as investors had their sights set on the Fed announcement on Wednesday.

Still, consumers' moods have not completely deteriorated and a separate gauge showed confidence unexpectedly rose in July as Americans were more optimistic about the short-term outlook than they were about their current situations.
The Conference Board said its index of consumer attitudes climbed to 65.9 from a upwardly revised 62.7 in June. Recent strength in the U.S. stock market likely boosted sentiment, economists said.
Despite the improvement, confidence remains well below levels before the financial crisis.
"Given the current economic environment - in particular the weak labor market - consumer confidence is not likely to gain any significant momentum in the coming months," Lynn Franco, director of The Conference Board Consumer Research Center, said in a statement.
In the manufacturing sector, the pace of business activity in the U.S. Midwest rose in July, as somewhat stronger new orders offset a weakening labor environment.
The Institute for Supply Management-Chicago business barometer rose to 53.7 from 52.9 in June. The report comes a day ahead of two larger national manufacturing reports.

There's always this very minor delay that actually gets more frustrating with use, especially if you're used to something a little cleaner and quicker. That being said, the included apps are a big plus.
You've got Music Unlimited (which offers a free membership) and a Reader app as well, which syncs up with any Sony eReader hardware. There's even a nifty MediaRemote app that can be used as a universal remote. Bear in mind that I did not test this. I was a little too focused on exploring the one aspect of this tablet that would appeal most to gamers: The all-important inclusion of the PlayStation Store.
For Gamers?
Well...it's there. That's about all I can say right now. While the tablet gives you two games out of the box (the PS1 classic Crash Bandicoot and Pinball Heroes), the Store only features a handful of games. In fact, only about a dozen. Given what the Store actually has when you log on with the PS3 or Vita, that's just a ridiculously low number. Still, at least the Store is available and I've been told they'll keep updating with S-compatible software. PS1 classics on the go is great, but bear in mind that such compatibility will be coming to the Vita very soon.
Overall, I'd say the Tablet S features a great design that is comfortable when held in almost any fashion, a really top-notch graphical display that captures the color saturation quality of a lot of high-res stuff, and the available Music Unlimited and Reader apps make me feel a lot better about the product. It does just about everything any other tablet does (plus a full-screen Chumby alarm clock) and perhaps a tick more, and that's important.

Indian officials said they had no idea who the woman was. Indian media identified her as Madhura Nagendra, a graduate student from the southern city of Bangalore who had been living in London.
Her father, K. Nagendra, was quoted by the Press Trust of India news agency as saying that his daughter had been chosen to dance in director Danny Boyle's ceremony, and speculated that she might have been asked by organizers to escort India's team into the stadium.
"This might have hurt our team's feelings. I feel very sorry for that," he was quoted as saying.
The mystery woman case dominated Indian media's coverage of the opening of the games.
"Who's That Girl?" asked the front page of The Hindustan Times.
"Leaky London: Unaccounted presence in march past," said a headline in the Times of India. The newspaper said the mystery woman had "brazenly gatecrashed the party, raising security concerns and adding to the anger over India's blink-and-miss appearance on global TV screens."
Bedi said India's acting chef de mission, P.K.M. Raja, had sent games organizers an official letter of complaint.
"I think this is definitely a security lapse," Bedi said.
But London organizing chief Sebastian Coe insisted the woman had not posed a threat to the ceremony. He told reporters she was "a cast member who clearly got slightly over-excited."
Some 10,000 volunteers performed alongside professional musicians, actors and dancers in Boyle's spectacular ceremony.
Coe stressed the woman had been screened to get into Olympic Stadium so there had been no security breach.
"Don't run away with the idea that she walked in off the street," Coe said, adding that games officials "will have our own discussions" about the incident.
There was perhaps a touch of Indian satisfaction in Britain's perceived lapse, which comes as India is suffering its own Olympic embarrassment. An Indian court has barred Indian Olympic Association chief Suresh Kalmadi from attending the London opening ceremony, citing the "national interest."
Kalmadi is out on bail after spending nine months in jail awaiting trial on corruption charges related to the 2010 Commonwealth Games.
India also was stung by British media criticism of the chaotic preparations for those 2010 games in New Delhi, which were marred by construction delays and a budget that ballooned from $412 million to $15 billion.
Bedi said the opening ceremony intrusion did not reflect poorly on India.
"We are too big a country to be embarrassed by it," he said. "It should be an embarrassment for the hosts, not for India."

ScienceDaily (July 29, 2012) ? Scientists at The University of Manchester and the SuperSTEM facility at STFC's Daresbury Laboratory have discovered that the 'miracle material', graphene, undergoes a self repairing process to mend holes.
This research, published in Nano Letters, could hold the key in the quest to realise graphene's huge potential for use in fields from electronics to medicine.
Graphene, which is made of sheets of carbon just one atom thick, is a promising material for a wide range of future applications due, for instance, to its exceptional electronic properties.
The team, led by Professor Kostya Novoselov, who shared a Nobel Prize in Physics in 2010 for exploiting the remarkable properties of graphene's, was originally looking to gain a deeper understanding into how metals interact with graphene, essential if it is to be integrated into practical electronic devices in the future.
The researchers were using a powerful electron microscope at the SuperSTEM Laboratory at Daresbury, which allows scientists to study the properties of materials one atom at a time. They recently demonstrated that metals can initiate the formation of holes in the graphene sheet, which could be hugely detrimental to the properties of any graphene-based device.
Surprise results then showed that some of the holes that had been created during this process were actually mending themselves spontaneously using nearby loose carbon atoms to re-knit the graphene structure.
Dr Quentin Ramasse, Scientific Director at SuperSTEM said: "This was a very exciting and unexpected result. The fact that graphene can heal itself under the right conditions may be the difference between a working device and a proof of concept without any real application. We may now have a way of not only drilling through graphene in a controlled fashion to sculpt it at the atomic level, but also to grow it back in new shapes. This adds a lot of flexibility to our nanotechnology toolbox and could pave the way to future technological applications."
SuperSTEM (link opens in a new window) is the EPSRC National Facility for Aberration Corrected STEM and is run by a consortium of universities, consisting of Leeds, Glasgow, Liverpool, Manchester and Oxford. Other collaboration agreements with the external partner universities Cambridge, Sheffield, Warwick and York will be commencing shortly and the facility has received ?4.5M funding from EPSRC.
