Breeding Miscue Robbed Taste From Supermarket Tomatoes

60-Second Science60-Second Science | More Science

Supermarket tomatoes were bred to all turn light green at the same time, but what came along for that ride was a reduction in the ability to produce sugar. Cynthia Graber reports.

For many people summer equals tomatoes. That?s when folks can get their hands on gorgeous heirloom and traditional varieties, full of tomatoey flavor. Such tomatoes provide a stark contrast to year-round supermarket ones, famous for tasting like, well, nothing. They?ve been bred for uniform color and ripening ? not for taste.

Now scientists have determined just what?s genetically missing in store-bought tomatoes.

The researchers honed in on two transcription factors. Transcription factors are proteins that control the expression of genes ? in this case they?re necessary for the production of chloroplasts, which allow sunlight to generate sugars and other compounds.

Darker green tomato fruit expresses genes that make possible increased photosynthesis?and so the fruits are able to produce more sugars for a tastier end product. But typical supermarket tomatoes, which had been bred to all turn light green at the same time, were also accidentally bred with reduced chloroplasts?and thus reduced sugar content. The research was published in the journal Science. [Ann L.T. Powell et al, Uniform ripening Encodes a Golden 2-like Transcription Factor Regulating Tomato Fruit Chloroplast Development]

The scientists say understanding the genes involved in better flavor could enable growers to offer tastier supermarket varieties. So that when you say tomato, I can say tomato or tomahto instead of blech.

10 Gigabit per-second connection between US and China demoed

Internet2You, sir or ma'am, should probably not get too excited. Chances are, this trans-Pacific 10 Gigabit link won't do you any good, personally. On the other hand, researchers working together across the oceanic divide have tons to cheer about. The China Education and Research Network, the National Science Foundation and Indiana University worked together with BGI, one of the largest genomics organizations in the world, to christen the connection by transferring 24 Gigabytes of genomic data from Beijing to UC Davis in under 30 seconds. As a benchmark, the same file was sent between the same locations over the regular ol' Internet and it took over 26 hours. The high-speed link should prove to be a major boon for genetic research and DNA sequencing.

AN EDITORIAL: U.S. shouldn't slip on oil?s temptation in its Burma policy

The Washington Post, June 28

So far, the Obama administration has carefully modulated its Burma policy, easing sanctions to welcome fragile democratic progress while recognizing the long distance still to cover. Now the modulation is at risk.

Administration officials are debating whether to allow U.S. oil companies to do business with Burma?s state-owned energy company. U.S. companies reportedly have been lobbying hard. But opening this area of investment would contradict the spirit of the policy that Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton announced a couple of months ago. It would contradict the explicit advice, articulated at no small risk to her internal position, of democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi. Why would President Obama want to undercut her at this delicate moment?

Burma, also known as Myanmar, is a resource-rich Southeast Asian nation of 50 million or so people that has been ground into poverty during decades of military misrule. Now, at the initiative of President Thein Sein, a former general, it is allowing more freedom and seeking economic and political connection with the world. Thein Sein and Aung San Suu Kyi, the Nobel Peace laureate who spent most of the past 23 years under house arrest, are trying to find common ground to push reform forward. The hopeful analogy is of South Africa?s F.W. de Klerk and Nelson Mandela.

Speaking to the British parliament a few days ago, Aung San Suu Kyi welcomed ?democracy-friendly investment . . . that prioritizes transparency, accountability, workers? rights and environmental sustainability.? The state-owned oil company represents the antithesis of these values; it has been a funder and enabler of the worst abuses of military rule.

The company ?lacks both transparency and accountability at present,? Aung San Suu Kyi said recently. ?The government needs to apply internationally recognized standards . . . on fiscal transparency. Other countries could help by not allowing their own companies to partner? with the Burmese firm ?unless it was signed up to such codes.?

Finding the right pace to ease sanctions can be tricky. Thein Sein and his faction need to demonstrate, both to hard-line opponents and to the public, that democratic progress will bring benefits. On the other hand, reformers are helped if they also can argue that further reforms are needed to win further concessions. Burma?s judges and media still are controlled, hundreds of political prisoners have yet to be released, violence continues against ethnic minorities and fewer than one in 10 parliamentarians were chosen through free elections.

But this isn?t one of the tricky calls. In April, Ms. Clinton promised ?a targeted easing . . . to help accelerate economic modernization and political reform. Sanctions and prohibitions will stay in place,? the secretary vowed, ?on individuals and institutions that remain on the wrong side of these historic reform efforts.?

The state-owned oil company has been on the wrong side. Until it takes steps to shift over, the United States should show that it meant what Ms. Clinton said. Rather than give in to oil-industry arguments against leaving the field to other nations, the United States should lead those nations in insisting on transparency as a condition of investment.

Sudan police uses tear gas to disperse protest

(AP) ? Sudanese police used tear gas Friday to disperse protesters who took to the streets in a city near the capital to demand the ouster of the country's autocratic regime, an opposition member said.

The protests were prompted by government's austerity plan that slashed subsidies and doubled the price of fuel and food. They also appeared to be inspired by Arab Spring uprisings in neighboring Egypt and Libya. Demonstrators demanded the removal of longtime Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir.

Protests have taken place in different parts of Sudan for the past two weeks. This was the first call for an organized Friday rally, in line with weekly anti-regime demonstrations that have marked the past 18 months in restive nations around the region.

Siddique Tawer, a member of a Sudanese opposition umbrella group, said more than a thousand people demonstrated after Friday prayers in city of Omdurman, calling for al-Bashir to step down. Omdurman is across the White Nile river from the capital, Khartoum.

Tawer said the police tried to break up the protest with tear gas. He said there were smaller rallies in different parts of Khartoum, in the northern Kordofan state and in the central Blue Nile state.

The protesters chanted anti-regime slogans, including "The people want to bring down the regime," a mantra of Arab Spring protests across the Mideast.

"This 23-year-old regime must change. It has corrupted, humiliated, robbed and divided the country. They must pay," Tawer said.

Sudanese police were ordered last week to respond "firmly and immediately" to the demonstrations, which the government described as rioters seeking to sabotage public properties and obstruct the government.

The Sudanese call for protests, made through Facebook, called the rally "Friday of licking your elbow," a Sudanese expression used by officials to mock calls for change by characterizing them as impossible.

Al-Bashir has defended his austerity measures by noting that with the secession of South Sudan, his country has turned from an oil exporter to an importer. He also pointed to the costly conflict with South Sudan, where key issues like borders and control of oil fields have not been settled.

Al-Bashir is under indictment by the International Criminal Court for genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity over another conflict ? a decade-long war in Sudan's Darfur region.

Staying Safe and Secure in the Public WiFi Wilderness

With the apparent clamp-down on formerly liberal U.S. data quotas by mobile operators, public WiFi hotspots -- like cafes -- for daily Web consumption may become an ever more likely Internet environment for many of us. Europeans have been used to limited mobile data quotas under various euphemisms like "fair use policies" and "data plans" for some time.

Japan, SKorea sign military pact

TOKYO (AP) ? Japan and South Korea have agreed to share intelligence in their first joint military pact since World War II.

Japan's Cabinet approved the pact Friday. It will allow sharing intelligence in such areas as missile defense, North Korea's nuclear weapons program and other regional security matters. It has already been approved by South Korea and is to be signed in Tokyo later in the day.

The pact reflects mutual concerns that more cooperation is needed to enhance security readiness, and is seen as a breakthrough in ties between the two neighbors.

Japan ruled Korea as a colony for several decades until the end of World War II in 1945, and Seoul has often been wary of Japan's postwar military development.

Technique could turn any surface into a lithium-ion battery; may be combined with solar cells

HOUSTON (June 28, 2012) Researchers at Rice University have developed a lithium-ion battery that can be painted on virtually any surface.

The rechargeable battery created in the lab of Rice materials scientist Pulickel Ajayan consists of spray-painted layers, each representing the components in a traditional battery. The research appears today in Nature's online, open-access journal Scientific Reports.

"This means traditional packaging for batteries has given way to a much more flexible approach that allows all kinds of new design and integration possibilities for storage devices," said Ajayan, Rice's Benjamin M. and Mary Greenwood Anderson Professor in Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science and of chemistry. "There has been a lot of interest in recent times in creating power sources with an improved form factor, and this is a big step forward in that direction."

Lead author Neelam Singh, a Rice graduate student, and her team spent painstaking hours formulating, mixing and testing paints for each of the five layered components two current collectors, a cathode, an anode and a polymer separator in the middle.

The materials were airbrushed onto ceramic bathroom tiles, flexible polymers, glass, stainless steel and even a beer stein to see how well they would bond with each substrate.

In the first experiment, nine bathroom tile-based batteries were connected in parallel. One was topped with a solar cell that converted power from a white laboratory light. When fully charged by both the solar panel and house current, the batteries alone powered a set of light-emitting diodes that spelled out "RICE" for six hours; the batteries provided a steady 2.4 volts.

The researchers reported that the hand-painted batteries were remarkably consistent in their capacities, within plus or minus 10 percent of the target. They were also put through 60 charge-discharge cycles with only a very small drop in capacity, Singh said.

Each layer is an optimized stew. The first, the positive current collector, is a mixture of purified single-wall carbon nanotubes with carbon black particles dispersed in N-methylpyrrolidone. The second is the cathode, which contains lithium cobalt oxide, carbon and ultrafine graphite (UFG) powder in a binder solution. The third is the polymer separator paint of Kynar Flex resin, PMMA and silicon dioxide dispersed in a solvent mixture. The fourth, the anode, is a mixture of lithium titanium oxide and UFG in a binder, and the final layer is the negative current collector, a commercially available conductive copper paint, diluted with ethanol.

"The hardest part was achieving mechanical stability, and the separator played a critical role," Singh said. "We found that the nanotube and the cathode layers were sticking very well, but if the separator was not mechanically stable, they would peel off the substrate. Adding PMMA gave the right adhesion to the separator." Once painted, the tiles and other items were infused with the electrolyte and then heat-sealed and charged.

Singh said the batteries were easily charged with a small solar cell. She foresees the possibility of integrating paintable batteries with recently reported paintable solar cells to create an energy-harvesting combination that would be hard to beat. As good as the hand-painted batteries are, she said, scaling up with modern methods will improve them by leaps and bounds. "Spray painting is already an industrial process, so it would be very easy to incorporate this into industry," Singh said.

The Rice researchers have filed for a patent on the technique, which they will continue to refine. Singh said they are actively looking for electrolytes that would make it easier to create painted batteries in the open air, and they also envision their batteries as snap-together tiles that can be configured in any number of ways.

"We really do consider this a paradigm changer," she said.

As good as the hand-painted batteries are, she said, scaling up with modern methods will improve them by leaps and bounds. "Spray painting is already an industrial process, so it would be very easy to incorporate this into industry," Singh said.

Melodion Humor ? Four Letter Nerd

Stumbled across this humorous piece about finding, buying and playing a melodion by the Arts and Entertainment columnist for the Times Colonist. He plays keyboards with a rhythm and blues band in his spare time.

Still playing and becoming faster at reading music. Working on two specific tunes but interrupt that to try new ones for the music reading practice. I keep telling myself I should try what a retired professional musician suggested: play along with a recorded version of the song. I?ve downloaded 3 youtube vids so the only thing stopping me is me, as usual.

Casino Groups Fork Out Lobbying Bucks In Maryland ? CBS Baltimore

BEN GILES
The Washington Examiner

UPPER MARLBORO, Md. (AP) ? Maryland?s top lobbyists cashed in on the General Assembly?s casino debate this year, as the state?s nine highest-earning lobbyists all worked for companies with interests in a statewide gambling expansion.

Gambling organizations and groups tied to Maryland?s horse racing industry spent hundreds of thousands of dollars between Nov. 1, 2011 and April 30, in an effort to influence lawmakers to support their respective interests.

Penn National Gaming, the owner of Rosecroft Raceway in Fort Washington, spent the most, with 877,432.84 reported, according to the Maryland State Ethics Commission?s twice-annual report.

The Pennsylvania casino group spent roughly $375,000 more than the next highest organization, the Maryland State Education Association.

Rosecroft?appeared the most likely destination for a Prince George?s casino before County Executive Rushern Baker threw his support behind a larger casino project at National Harbor. While the company tried to defend its interests in Maryland, it easily eclipsed spending by other gambling organizations in the state.

CBAC Gaming LLC, the group behind the bid for a Baltimore casino, spent $163,309.

The Cordish Cos., developer of the newly opened Maryland Live! Casino, spent $86,542.50 as it fights a proposed Prince George?s casino.

And the Peterson Cos., developer of the Prince George?s casino?s likely destination, National Harbor, spent $61,367.64.

Lawmakers are still locked over a proposal that would add a sixth state casino site in Prince George?s County and authorize table games such as blackjack and roulette.

Some lobbyists? six-month compensation nearly matched their earnings for the entire year prior to the latest report from the Ethics Commission, which ranks lobbyists who paid $50,000 or more.

Gerard Evans, the state?s highest-earning lobbyist, raked in $1.05 million over the last six months ? not far off the $1.23
million he earned from November 2010 to October 2011.

?It?s a debate that?s unfortunately captivated the General Assembly in some way,? Evans said, who lobbied on behalf of Penn National. ?And anytime you have issues that are so important, you are going to have costs associated with it.?

Evans? contract with Penn National ended in April, he said.

Other top-ranked lobbyists include Joel Rozner, who represents CBAC?Gaming LLC and the Maryland Jockey Club; Lisa Harris Jones, another lobbyist for Penn National; and Bruce Bereano, a lobbyist for the Cloverleaf?Standardbred?Owners? Association, the parent company of the former owner of Rosecroft Raceway.

Study finds gout and hyperuricemia on the rise in the US

Wednesday, June 27, 2012

Researchers from Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM) have found that the incidence of gout and hyperuricemia (high uric acid levels) in the U.S. has risen significantly over the last 20 years and is associated with major medical disorders like hypertension and chronic kidney disease. The study, which is published in the American Journal of Medicine, was led by Hyon Choi, MD, DrPH, professor of medicine in the section of rheumatology and the clinical epidemiology unit at BUSM and rheumatologist at Boston Medical Center (BMC).

Gout is a common inflammatory arthritis triggered by crystallization of uric acid within the joints, causing severe pain and swelling.

Using data from the latest U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) conducted in 2007 and 2008, which included data from 5,707 participants, the researchers found that gout now affects 8.3 million Americans, or four percent of the population. They also found that hyperuricemia affects 43.3 million U.S. adults, or 21 percent of the population.

The study results demonstrated that participants with gout have remarkably high rates of hypertension (74 percent) and chronic kidney disease (71 percent). More than half of this patient population was obese (53 percent) and a significant number had diabetes (26 percent) and kidney stones (24 percent). These participants also showed high rates of heart attack (14 percent), heart failure (11 percent) and stroke (10 percent).

Additionally, study results showed that among individuals with the highest uric acid levels, rates of kidney disease (86 percent), hypertension (66 percent) and obesity (65 percent) were high. Approximately one third of the survey participants had heart failure and diabetes, and the prevalence of heart attack (23 percent) and stroke (12 percent) also were high.

"These findings highlight the remarkable prevalences and population estimates of medical disorders associated with gout and hyperuricemia in the U.S.," said Choi, the study's senior author. "Appropriate preventive and management measures of these associated conditions should be implemented in gout management, and when considering treatment strategies in gout, the lifestyle and pharmacologic measures that can concurrently improve serum uric acid and reduce associated disorders should be preferred."

Obama and Biden strike at Romney on overseas jobs

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (AP) ? President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden unleashed a back-to-back assault Tuesday on Republican challenger Mitt Romney, re-emphasizing Democratic assertions that Romney as a venture capitalist sent U.S. jobs overseas and paid no heed to the impact on American workers.

"You've got to give Mitt Romney credit," Biden said while campaigning in Iowa. "He's a job creator in Singapore, China, India."

Obama, who was holding fundraisers in Atlanta and Miami, cast his Republican rival as the type of wealthy investor whose only goal was making money no matter the cost.

"Governor Romney and his allies believe that we should go back to the top-down economics of the last decade. They believe that if we eliminate regulations and we cut taxes by trillions of dollars, we just leave the market alone, that everybody will prosper," Obama said in Miami Beach. "They argue that if you help corporations and wealthy investors maximize their profits by whatever means necessary, whether it be layoffs or outsourcing, union busting or whatever means are available, that will automatically translate into jobs and prosperity to benefit everybody."

Behind the criticism of Romney's business record is the Obama campaign's belief that the effort to undermine a potential Romney strength ? his experience as the successful head of the private equity firm Bain Capital ? is yielding results and raising questions with voters.

Biden made note of news reports that Bain took over firms that sent jobs to China and India and opposed union efforts to increase wages and improve benefits. The Romney campaign has argued that the reports aren't accurate and don't take into account how work done overseas supports U.S. exports.

"The president and I don't see American workers as part of the problem. We see them as the heart of the solution," he said.

Romney campaign spokeswoman Andrea Saul called Biden's comments misleading and said they were an effort to distract voters from Obama's "disastrous economic record."

"President Obama has failed to meet his own standard for lowering unemployment because he has no idea what it takes to get our economy moving again," Saul said in a statement. "On Day One, Mitt Romney will take action to jumpstart our economy and give job creators the incentives they need to thrive here in America."

The back and forth on Romney's business record has become a familiar campaign theme. A political committee supporting Obama began airing an ad over the weekend accusing Romney of making millions while shutting down an Indiana paper plant.

Biden was beginning a two-day visit to Iowa, a swing state whose six electoral votes could be significant in the November election. He spoke to more than 400 people, many of them union members from a John Deere factory, transit workers and members of a public employees union.

For Obama, it was the second day of targeting Romney. He emphasized that their contest is a choice between ideologies, not a referendum on his own performance.

"The question is not whether we need to put more folks back to work or whether we need to see the economy growing faster or whether we need to bring down our debt," he told the crowd of donors in Atlanta. "The question is how do we do it."

The president held two fundraisers in Atlanta, followed by two events in Miami Beach, including a performance by singer Marc Anthony, raising at least $2.3 million.

Obama was holding the fundraisers at the start of a pivotal week for his campaign. The Supreme Court is expected to rule on his health care overhaul law on Thursday, passing judgment on the most significant piece of legislation during his presidency.

And it comes as Obama and his team have warned that Romney and his Republican allies would outspend him during the presidential campaign.

In an e-mail to supporters Tuesday, Obama bluntly stated: "I will be the first president in modern history to be outspent in his re-election campaign, if things continue as they have so far."

The urgent tone was designed to spur more giving. Until last month, Obama had been by far the leading fundraiser in the presidential contest. But Romney, after securing the nomination, has consolidated his support.

Romney raised more than $76 million last month for his presidential campaign and for the GOP, compared to $60 million for Obama and the Democrats. Obama's advisers say they expect Republican-leaning super PACs to pull in $1.2 billion before the election, posing a big-money challenge for the president. Obama has more than $100 million in his campaign account, but Democratic super PACs have struggled to raise money.

Obama has now raised the stakes, saying that even without the help of GOP-leaning super PACs, Romney could still outspend him.

"You're going to have more money spent in this election than ever before by the other side on negative ads," Obama said in Atlanta. "And their message will be simple. They'll say, the economy is bad and it's Obama's fault."

Shopping http://carsforsaleedmonton.net For Auto Insurance? Follow This Advice

Auto insurance is a helpful tool for many drivers. It provides protection for drivers in the event of accidents. In many states it is also required by law. If you need any help selecting auto insurance, then the advice in this article will help you with your decision.

Following a vehicle accident, if you have a camera or telephone with camera functionality available and can safely do so, take photographs of the accident site before the vehicles are moved. These photographs may come in handy if there are questions or disputes concerning fault or claim resolution down the road.

Some drivers save money on their car insurance by registering or insuring their vehicles in places they do not actually live, but this is unwise. All it takes is one insurance claim to wipe out the savings afforded by such a scheme. Insurance companies can deny claims and drop coverage based on such deceptions, and they will discover them at the most inopportune times.

To save money on auto insurance, check your other insurance policies for what they cover first. If your auto insurer is willing to cover your medical bills while out of the country, that is good coverage. However, if you already have that from your health insurance, tell your auto insurer to drop that part of the policy and cut your payments.

If you want to get cheap rates on car insurance, one of the best things that you can do is to maintain a good credit score. Insurance companies take into account your credit score when calculating for your insurance. Maintaining a good http://edmontonchevydealers.com credit score can remove unnecessary additions to your premium.

Remove drivers that are on your insurance policy if they are no longer driving. Having inactive drivers just may your increase premium higher than it should be. It is best that as soon as this person stops driving you call your insurance company right away and have them removed.

You may be able to get some very nice discounts on the premium of your auto insurance policy via your employer. Sometimes they will cut a deal with insurance companies to offer some special group rates to their employees. Make sure to check with HR to see if this kind of deal is available at your workplace.

One way to keep your car insurance costs low is by not buying a sports car. Insurance companies charge higher rates for sporty vehicles since they have higher horsepower, tend to be driven by younger, riskier drivers and are notorious for moving at high speeds. Sticking with a modest, mid-size vehicle may not be much fun, but it can help keep your car insurance rates affordable.

Did you know that what type of area you live in is a variable in how much you will pay for auto insurance? If you live in a large city, you are more likely to have an accident with another car and this in turn increases the price of your policy. You might want to consider paying a higher deductible in order to offset the higher premium cost.

If you just got married, you should aim to combine you and your spouse?s auto insurance policies if you both have the same auto insurer. Doing this will give both of you the multi-car discount, which will save you and your spouse EdmontonDealerships.net a large amount of money on auto insurance.

If you want to get cheap auto insurance rates as a brand new driver, one of the things that you can do is to take a pass plus. Some insurance companies can give up to 25% on discount if they know that you passed your test without any claims. This could greatly lower your insurance coverage.

Although you may think your insurance will be reasonable because you are driving an economy car, you may just have a surprise. Some cars are considered to be highly sought by thieves and if this is true of your car, you will see an increase in the price of your insurance, as well. Be sure to be aware of this when purchasing your car and consider avoiding these ?hot? cars.

Increase your deductible on your auto insurance policy. You can see the greatest reduction in the cost of your policy by doing this. By raising the amount of money you will be out of pocket in case of an accident, you will be putting the insurance company at a smaller risk, that will, in turn, lower your rates.

For automobile insurance, look into good driver discounts. If you have a good driving record, you may be eligible for reduced rates on your insurance. Particularly if you have not been in an accident or received a speeding ticket in over three years, there is a good chance that you will qualify.

In conclusion, auto insurance is helpful for drivers, because it provides protections for drivers in accidents. Auto insurance is required by law in many states, and selecting it may be hard. Using the advice from this article, you can select auto insurance and reap the benefits that other drivers have.
