Track and Field Programs Haul in a Bevy of Academic Accolades ...

New Orleans, LA --- Nine WPI student-athletes and both of its Track and Field programs were recently recognized for their academic achievements from the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.? It marks the fifth consecutive season that both the men's and women's programs have been named an USTFCCCA All-Academic team.?

To earn the honor, a team must compile a GPA of at least 3.10 or higher.? To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, a student-athlete must have earned a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 and have competed in an NCAA Indoor or Outdoor Championship or finished the regular season ranked in the national top 35 in an individual event or ranked in the national top 25 (collective listing) in a relay event on the official NCAA POP list provided by TFRRS.org.?

The WPI men registered a stellar team GPA of 3.43 and had five student-athletes distinguished with All-Academic honors.? High jumper Jameel Galloway (Randolph, MA) earned the award by participating in the NCAA Outdoor Championships while the 4x400 relay team of Joey Collins (Standish, ME), Stephen Kocienski (Schaghticoke, NY), Austin Holliday (Danville, CA) and Kyle Morette (Leominster, MA) earned the award by all having a 3.30 GPA or higher and posting an indoor time in the top 25 nationwide.? Nationwide the USTFCCA recognized 74 men's teams and 226 individuals representing 84 institutions.?

The WPI women sported an impressive 3.38 overall GPA. All four Engineers that participated in the NCAA Championships earned All-Academic honors. ?The quartet included Noelle Richard (Oxford, MA - Indoor and Outdoor 400 meters) and Julie Eagle (Rock Island, IL - Outdoor High Jump), who were honored for the second straight year and first time winners Vicky Hewey (Sanford, ME - Outdoor 3000 Meter Steeplechase) and Emily Pearce (Avon, CT - Pole Vault).? Overall 137 women's teams (including four NEWMAC schools) were honored while 340 individuals were recognized representing 107 institutions. ??

Both track and field programs had success on the track and in the classroom under fourth-year head coach Brian Chabot.? The men were second in the NEWMAC and posted top 10 finishes in both the New England Indoor and Outdoor Championships while the women were fourth in the conference and tallied a 12th place showing in the Indoor New England Championships and a 16th place finish in the Outdoor Championships.? Also Richard, Eagle, Kocienski and sophomore Wesley DeChristofaro (Woonsocket, RI) were selected to the Capital One Division III Academic All-District I Track and Field/Cross Country team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (Co-SIDA). ??
