Bed bugs move easily with communities due to extensive travel by people and a well-established antique furniture market. They also travel with ease between homes in highly populated areas, particularly in cities. Bed bugs are usually around 5mm in length with brown oval-shaped bodies. Bed bug eradication requires a thorough treatment regime to ensure their complete removal.
Symptoms of bed bugs include red/brown marks on the mattress after feeding on their human host as well as a distinctive sweet smell. Bedbugs and their eggs and deposits may be found in any nooks and crannies within a room, particularly within cavities in walls and furniture, along skirting boards and behind light switches.
Bed bugs feed on the blood of humans and the bite is the result of a feeding session, usually at night when the people are asleep and therefore unaware, and while sections of skin may be uncovered whilst in bed. The neck and arms and legs are at risk of bed bug bites when sleeping in a bedroom that is infested. It is essential that a bed bug infestation is dealt with comprehensively.
1) Thoroughly clean and vacuum the room where the bed bug infestation has been found, paying close attention to skirting boards, crevices and cracks using the thinnest nozzle of the vacuum cleaner. Vacuum carpets and behind pictures and radiators etc.. All the furniture must be cleaned and vacuumed. Remove all the bedding from the room such as sheets, blankets, duvet covers and mattress protectors and wash in very hot water to kill any bed bugs and their eggs. Children's toys and similar personal effects should also be thoroughly cleaned. Ensure you empty the vacuum cleaner well away from the home.
2) Use a fumer or fogger to release a pesticide smoke in to the room as a complete killer treatment. Foggers are a critical method for getting rid of bed bugs as they penetrate all areas of a room where bed bugs may reside. Ensure all windows are completely closed and storage units are open before you begin the treatment to allow the smoke to thoroughly penetrate. Leave the room for at least two hours and preferably overnight or through the day. After treatment, ventilate the room by opening windows and doors. If dead bed bugs are evident, vacuum again.
3) Use a pesticide spray with non-staining properties to treat all surfaces to prevent bed bugs returning, including all hard and soft furnishings such as the mattress. Natural alternatives are available. If you have any respiratory problems consider using a mask. Allow the spray to dry before using furniture again.
4) To prevent bed bugs returning, a dusting powder should be applied to entry points in the room, for example around windows and where radiator pipes meet the floorboards. The residual effect of the powder will deter bed bugs from returning, killing them on contact.
Bed bugs can be persistent, and several treatments may be necessary to ensure complete eradication. Bed bugs may move to another room in your home adjacent to the one being treated and the process above should be repeated as soon as possible in all rooms known to be infested with bed bugs.
