Andrew Mwanguhya and Abdu Kiyaga
8 October 2011
By 7am, Ugandans sports fans had already flocked the streets clad in their black, white, yellow and red national team jerseys as they blew their vuvuzela?s loud. Fares to Mandela national stadium, Namboole shot up to Shs7000 but however, this did not deter the fans to board taxis and any other means of transport they could secure to go and show support to their national team.
Despite the morning down pour , the fans who could not afford the hiked fares opted to walk while others could be seen jumping on to boda-bodas? in groups of three and to ensure that they arrive in time for the big match which could see the Uganda national team break the 34 year old jinx.
However, there was disorganization at the entrance as journalists were temporarily barred from getting into the stadium with security claiming that they could not get inside before it was 10 o?clock when the gates would be officially opened.
?We have been refused entry before the gates are officially opened but as journalists, we have to be inside before fans get here,? complained a Kenyan journalist.
Meanwhile, the match tickets which have been scarce during the week were seen being sold by fans at double price.
Tickets that were meant for Shs20, 000 were being offered at Shs40, 000 but however, security seemed unaware or oblivious. By 11am,the space next to the pavilion was almost full but outside the stadium queues were stretching up to Mandela Sports Hotel ,which is about 150metres away from the stadium. The northern by pass also had a heavy traffic with lines of cars stretching about 3 kilometres.
Carrying drinks including water inside the stadium was prohibited, and fans had to quench their thirsty within the parking lot which was also full of human traffic.
?They are not allowing any drinks inside and we wonder how we will spend the entire day without water,? shouted a Ugandan fan as he went through the security check.
Uganda Cranes need nothing less than a win against Kenya to be assured of a slot in the next year?s Africa Cup of Nations final.
