10 Biggest Diet Mistakes | XFINITY TV News

Originally published in the Fall 2011 Makeover issue of InStyle magazine.

MISTAKE 1: YOU FEAR CARBS
Carbohydrates have a sinister (and unfounded!) rap for packing on weight. But when you avoid them, you deplete serotonin levels, which can cause you to feel deprived. And no one can last long on a diet that makes them grouchy. ?Your brain energy fades, you?re tired, and you?re crabby,? says Jackie Keller, founder of NutriFit, a healthy-meals service that counts Ginnifer Goodwin as a client. ?Grains are for brains.?
THE FIX: Keller recommends loading up on ?favorable? carbs, such as fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. ?Those have fiber, vitamins, and minerals.?

MISTAKE 2: YOU OVERESTIMATE YOUR WORKOUT?S CALORIE BURN
You hop off the elliptical after a 45-minute sweat session, and as you?re heading out the gym door, you pop a few handfuls of trail mix into your mouth. Bad move. ?You?ve just consumed double the amount of calories that you burned,? says Joy Bauer, a Today show contributor and author of Joy Bauer?s Food Cures. ?A lot of women overcompensate this way.?
THE FIX: Even if it means keeping a flashcard in your gym bag, remind yourself?often?of the calorie expenditure of your favorite workout.

MISTAKE 3: YOU EAT HEALTHY FOOD BUT DON?T COOK IT YOURSELF
When is a plate of spinach not the dieting super-food it?s cracked up to be? When it?s dripping in butter and oil, restaurant-style. Basically, if you don?t prepare your own food, you give up control over your caloric destiny. And it?s not just the extras (like salt and sugar) that doom your menu orders; it?s the massive portions too. Grilled salmon is fabulous, but not when you?re eating enough for three people.
THE FIX: Slip on an apron or order wisely. Nutritionist Tanya Zuckerbrot?s F-Factor Diet Web site (ffactor.com) lists the healthiest options at popular chains.

MISTAKE 4: YOU WING IT
Quick! What?s for dinner tonight? ?If you don?t know, you?re likely to decide when you?re already hungry, tired, or rushed,? says Lauren Slayton, owner of Foodtrainers.net, a nutrition firm in N.Y.C. That can lead to grabbing whatever?s handiest or most compelling, like that bag of ?artisanal? potato chips. Another no-no: not being prepared for those inevitable mid-morning and afternoon energy dips.
THE FIX: Every day, make at least a rough plan for all meals and snacks. Yes, snacks. ?Eating a small, healthful snack between meals? ?try red pepper strips or low-fat string cheese??will stabilize blood sugar and keep your metabolism going strong,? says Tanya Zuckerbrot. ?You?ll also avoid overeating at your next meal.?

MISTAKE 5: YOU EAT A LOT OF PRE-PACKAGED DIET FOOD
Low-calorie snack bars, frozen dinners, and the like aren?t necessarily healthy. ?Diet foods often have too much sodium and sugar,? says N.Y.C. fitness and wellness expert David Kirsch. The fact that they?re low-cal can also send the wrong message and set your munching wheels in motion?who hasn?t absentmindedly worked her way through a giant stack of low-fat cookies? Joy Bauer acknowledges that a frozen diet meal can be convenient for time-starved women but points out that these dishes don?t teach you how to eat wisely when the diet is over and you?re back in the real world of cooking at home and eating at restaurants.
THE FIX: Use diet meals sparingly, says Bauer. ?They can be a great jump-start, but ultimately you have to be smart about the transition? to non-diet food and unregulated portions.

MISTAKE 6: YOU DRINK A LOT (AND WE?RE NOT TALKING WATER)
You thought this one would be all about alcohol, right? Wrong?sort of. Ignoring, for a moment, the 400- to 500-calorie frozen margarita, it?s the liquids you guzzle on a daily (if not hourly) basis that you really have to watch. ?It?s mind-boggling to tally the calories we consume in coffee concoctions, sweetened teas, sodas, and fruit smoothies,? says Bauer. ?I tell clients to save their calories for food and concentrate on drinking water, naturally flavored zero-calorie seltzer, or unsweetened coffee or tea.? If you need to sweeten up, do it yourself and stick to real sugar. At 20 calories per teaspoon, it won?t wreck your get-slim plan.

MISTAKE 7: YOU ?OVER-FRUIT?
If one banana is good for you, five must be fantastic, right? Not exactly. Although fruit is definitely healthy, some are way more sugary and caloric than others. One medium banana, for example, contains about 105 calories and 27 grams of carbs. Others in the supersweet camp include cherries, grapes, and mangos. So while fruit is certainly nutritionally superior to, say, a Snickers bar, 100 calories here and there can add up fast.
THE FIX: Don?t cut out fruit?just cut down on portions. ?Fruit is full of fiber, phytochemicals, and vitamins,? says Slayton. ?But if you?re trying to lose weight, stick to one or two servings per day.? And be sure to choose from the less sugary but still delicious part of the fruit basket, which includes berries (especially blackberries and raspberries), grapefruit, and apples.

MISTAKE 8: YOU LET YOURSELF GET TOO HUNGRY
Whether you?re attempting to ?save your calories? or you simply don?t want to carve time out of your day for a proper meal, allowing yourself to become ravenous is a bad idea. ?There?s nothing worse for your body than skipping meals in favor of hoarding calories at a later occasion,? says Jackie Keller. ?And it totally boomerangs because you overeat in response.?
THE FIX: Eat frequently, preferably every three to four hours. By approaching a meal (or that yummy tray of hors d?oeuvres at the cocktail party) with a lower level of hunger, you?ll make smarter choices.

MISTAKE 9: YOU THINK SHORT-TERM, NOT LONG HAUL
If all you care about is looking great at next weekend?s reunion, then go ahead and juice-cleanse to lose a fast five pounds. Lasting change, however, in the form of weight that doesn?t bounce right back on, requires digging deeper and accepting the fact that staying lean is a lifelong process. Yes, you can indulge every once in while, but then you need to get with the program again. ?I tell clients at the first session that weight loss is 50 percent attitude,? says Joy Bauer. ?If you?re not truly ready to make a full-time commitment, the chances of long-term success are slim.?
THE FIX: ?Do some soul-searching,? Bauer advises, to discover your motivation for losing weight?and keep it on the front burner by giving yourself a pep talk every morning. Be patient; you won?t become a healthy eater overnight. ?After 48 hours of following a plan that?s healthful, you?ll feel markedly better,? she says. ?But for a habit to truly sink in, you?re looking at two weeks?minimum.?

MISTAKE 10: YOU GIVE UP WHEN YOU SCREW UP
Every healthy-diet plan needs wiggle room?for that ginormous slice of cake at your cousin?s wedding, say, or the two-and-counting cosmos on girls? night out. The problem is our all-or-nothing attitude. ?Women don?t forgive their slipups,? says Bauer. ?We?re human. It?s inevitable that we?ll fall off the wagon. But nobody ever gains weight from a slice of pizza or a king-size chocolate bar. You gain weight when you let those things turn into repeated binges.?
THE FIX: Don?t beat yourself up; a positive attitude is crucial to staying the course. But definitely hightail it back to healthy eating after a fall. ?Shake yourself off and make sure that at the next meal, or at least the very next day, you get back on plan,? says Bauer.

Russia to elect parliament on December 4: Medvedev (Reuters)

SOCHI, Russia (Reuters) ? President Dmitry Medvedev on Monday set a parliamentary election for December 4 that will set the stage for Russia's presidential vote next March.

Medvedev signed a decree setting the date for the election to the 450-seat State Duma, the lower house of parliament, which is dominated by Prime Minister Vladimir Putin's ruling United Russia party.

"I would very much like the makeup of the future Duma to reflect the preferences of the broadest circle of our citizens to the maximum extent possible," Medvedev told party leaders.

The electoral law provides a small window for elections, and the December 4 date had been expected for the vote, which is by party list with no races between individual candidates. Duma members will be elected for five-year terms.

Medvedev's talk of plurality seemed aimed at appealing to Russians who are tired of the primacy of United Russia, which holds a two-thirds Duma majority, large enough to change the constitution, and dominates politics nationwide.

Steered into the presidency in 2008 by Putin, who faced a constitutional bar on a third straight term, Medvedev has loosened electoral laws, making it slightly easier for other parties to field candidates and win seats.

Critics say the changes are cosmetic adjustments designed to appease critics of United Russia while keeping the political system intact.

United Russia's senior official, Duma speaker Boris Gryzlov, said in remarks published on Monday that the party's aim is to preserve its constitutional majority.

With opinion polls and regional elections showing flagging support for the 'party of power', Putin established a broad 'People's Front' earlier this year in a bid to improve its chances in the parliamentary vote.

Putin has hinted he is trying to decide whether to run for a return to the presidency in March or endorse his protege Medvedev for a second term. Analysts say he may not make a decision public until after the parliamentary election.

Edit or Rewrite: Either Way it is Work for You! and this is article from ...

By Leland Poliks

As a freelance writer, some of my least favorite projects are those where the client wants me to rewrite an existing article. I have since learned that this type of statement, "It'll only involve a little editing," usually really means, "You'll have to rewrite the entire article in order for it to make sense." My advice to you, the freelancer, is try to determine in advance just how much "editing" you will have to do, otherwise be prepared to initiate a time consuming rewrite that won't pay for itself.

My first sizable rewriting job was one I now call, "my blunder from down under." By down under, I certainly don't mean Australia - you have to dig a lot deeper to go to where it is hotter. Get it? A real "devil" of a job!

The job involved "editing" five articles by including new information and cleaning up verbiage and syntax. Or so I thought. As it turned out, each of the five articles lacked clear and concise purpose and failed to produce a tight and sensible conclusion. I saw the "writing on the wall" and decided that the editing job would need to turn into a complete rewrite in order to make any sense of them.

Two full days later my work was done after submitting the drafts to the client, having the client send back additional changes and comments, and resubmitting the final copies back to the client.

After this experience I was mentally exhausted and frustrated, but I learned a valuable lesson: work diligently to uncover what a job entails before agreeing to take on a project and/or leave open the possibility that your price may change [read: will increase] should extra work be involved.

It was a tough lesson learned, but I found out that the "devil" is really in the details when it comes to accepting a rewriting project. Either way it is "work" for you!

Shortages grip Libyan capital as rebels hunt Gaddafi (Reuters)

TRIPOLI (Reuters) ? Tripoli struggled with collapsing water and power supplies on Saturday as rebels now in control of most of the Libyan capital battled for towns still held by Muammar Gaddafi's forces.

Sporadic bursts of gunfire echoed around Tripoli, but the street fighting of recent days, much of it in the traditionally pro-Gaddafi Abu Salim neighbourhood, seemed to have died away.

The rebel National Transitional Council (NTC) is trying to assert its authority and restore order in Tripoli but its top officials have yet to move there from Benghazi in the east.

The coastal highway to Tripoli is cut by pro-Gaddafi forces holding Sirte, the deposed leader's birthplace, 450 km (300 miles) east of the capital. They are defying rebels who had hoped Sirte would surrender swiftly after the fall of Tripoli.

"There is intensive consultation and negotiation with the community leaders of Sirte," NTC spokesman Mahmoud Shammam said in Tripoli. "We can take it militarily, but we want to take it peacefully."

He said rebels controlled the border post of Ras Jdir on the coast road between Tripoli and Tunisia after capturing it on Friday, but were still fighting around the town of Zawara, about 160 km west of the capital.

"The Gaddafi brigades are shelling the road, but we hope to be able to control it today," he said.

Gaddafi's own whereabouts remain unknown -- rebels hunting him say the war will not end until the 69-year-old colonel who kept Libya in his grip for 42 years is captured or killed.

A convoy of six Mercedes cars crossed from Libya into Algeria on Friday, Egypt's state MENA news agency reported, quoting a rebel source. It was impossible to verify the report, but MENA quoted the source as speculating senior Libyan officials or Gaddafi himself and his sons may have fled Libya.

The NTC and the Western powers that backed rebel forces with a five-month bombing campaign are acutely aware of the need to prevent Libya collapsing into the kind of chaos that plagued Iraq for years after the U.S.-led invasion of 2003.

Life remains far from normal in Tripoli, whose two million people are grappling with a breakdown in basic services, even as many of them celebrate the overthrow of a hated leader.

"There are widespread shortages of fuel, food and medical supplies, particularly in the Nafusa Mountains and Tripoli," U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said in New York, citing reports the water supply to Tripoli and its environs may be in danger, putting three million people or more at risk.

Britain promised 3 million pounds ($4.9 million) in urgent aid to the International Committee of the Red Cross to help it treat up to 5,000 war-wounded, provide food for nearly 690,000 people forced to flee their homes and reunite divided families.

The shortages in Tripoli have worsened, even though NTC chairman Mustafa Abdel Jalil said on Thursday his forces had discovered huge stockpiles of food and medicine in the capital that would eliminate any shortfalls.

Shammam, the NTC spokesman, said the council wanted staff at the National Oil Corporation, Libya's de facto energy ministry, to return to work, especially to tackle shortages of petrol, fuel oil and natural gas.

"A diesel cargo will arrive here. A cargo for cooking gas will be available within two days," he said. "A meeting was held at Zawiyah refinery to discuss ways to supply western Libya with gas and restart the refinery."

MOUNTAINS OF RUBBISH

Stinking garbage was piled high in the streets. In some districts, people set it on fire to stave off disease.

Electricity supplies were sporadic and running water was scarce. Residents carried empty containers to mosques, which often have wells in their courtyards, hoping to fill up. Outside one mosque, a sign read: "No water left."

In Abu Salim, bullet casings, some from large-caliber weapons, littered a square. About 50 charred cars dotted the neighbourhood, some tipped over with their doors hanging open.

Dozens of decomposing bodies still lay in and around Abu Salim's main hospital, abandoned by medical staff during the fighting. Rebels at a nearby checkpoint said the five doctors working there had fled three days ago. It was not clear how the deaths of the victims had occurred.

Five bloated bodies lay on trolleys at the entrance to the emergency department. They appeared to be pro-Gaddafi fighters. Two of them were dark-skinned, possibly among the thousands of sub-Saharan Africans who were drafted in to fight for Gaddafi.

Twenty-five bodies lay in the garden, wrapped in rugs and sprinkled with lime in a vain attempt to keep down the smell. Surgical masks and gloves were scattered on the ground. Ambulances were still parked in front of the hospital.

Amnesty International said on Friday it had evidence pro-Gaddafi forces had killed several prisoners in two camps in Tripoli since the battle for the capital erupted a week ago.

A Reuters correspondent counted 30 bullet-riddled bodies, apparently of pro-Gaddafi fighters, in central Tripoli on Thursday. At least two had their hands bound.

The NTC, which has warned its fighters not to carry out revenge killings, says it will merge its disparate forces in the capital under one command to streamline operations.

The rebel council is pressing foreign powers to release Libyan funds frozen abroad to help it restore security, provide services and revive the economy after six months of conflict.

The United States and South Africa struck a deal on Thursday to allow the release of $1.5 billion in frozen Libya funds for humanitarian aid and other civilian needs.

But Gaddafi's long-time allies in Africa, beneficiaries of his oil-fueled largesse and sympathizers with a foreign policy he called anti-colonial, offered him a grain of comfort and irked the rebels on Friday by refusing to follow Arab and Western powers in recognizing the NTC as the legal government.

Combined with the reluctance of major powers like China, Russia and Brazil, to see Europeans and Americans dominate a nation with Africa's biggest oil reserves, the African Union's resistance may slow the pace at which funds are released.

While many African states have recognized the NTC, the AU would not do so as long as fighting continued, South African President Jacob Zuma, a vocal advocate for Gaddafi, said after a meeting in Addis Ababa at which the AU called for all sides in the conflict to negotiate peace and work for democracy.

Many Libyans are eager to seal the victory of a popular uprising that was inspired by those in neighboring Egypt and Tunisia by seeing the deposed leader dead or behind bars.

"Gaddafi is the biggest criminal and dictator and we hope we will find him before the end of Ramadan," said Milad Abu Aisha, 60, after prayers at a Tripoli mosque on the last Friday before the Muslim fasting month ends early next week.

Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway To Invest $5 Billion In Bank Of America

Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway plans to buy $5 billion worth of preferred shares of Bank of America, according to CNBC. The troubled bank's stock soared 25 percent on the news.

Berkshire Hathaway will buy 50,000 shares at $100,000 per share, according to Business Insider. Shares of BofA, the value of which has been halved since the start of the year, are currently trading on the market at only $8.31 as of 9:42AM.

As Reuters notes, Buffett's company made a similar move to help Goldman Sachs during the financial crisis.

From the Associated Press:

Buffett said Thursday he had called Moynihan to ask about investing because he considered Bank of America to be a strong company with good leadership.

The bank has struggled under the weight of toxic mortgages from its 2008 purchase of Countrywide Financial Corp. In recent weeks, CEO Brian Moynihan has insisted the bank doesn't need to raise capital.

Moynihan says the company still has the capital and liquidity it needs. But he also said he realizes that an investment from Buffett represents a strong endorsement.

Bank of America?s press release, via the Wall Street Journal:

Bank of America Corporation announced today that it reached an agreement to sell 50,000 shares of Cumulative Perpetual Preferred Stock with a liquidation value of $100,000 per share to Berkshire Hathaway, Inc. in a private offering. The preferred stock has a dividend of 6 percent per annum, payable in equal quarterly installments, and is redeemable by the company at any time at a 5 percent premium.

In conjunction with this agreement, Berkshire Hathaway will also receive warrants to purchase 700,000,000 shares of Bank of America common stock at an exercise price of $7.142857 per share. The warrants may be exercised in whole or in part at any time, and from time to time, during the 10-year period following the closing date of the transaction. The aggregate purchase price to be received by Bank of America for the preferred stock and warrants is $5 billion in cash.

?We are building the best franchise in financial services and we have laid out a clear plan to deliver long-term shareholder value,? said Bank of America Chief Executive Officer Brian Moynihan. ?I remain confident that we have the capital and liquidity we need to run our business. At the same time, I also recognize that a large investment by Warren Buffett is a strong endorsement in our vision and our strategy.?

?Bank of America is a strong, well-led company, and I called Brian to tell him I wanted to invest in it,? said Berkshire Hathaway Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Warren Buffett. ?I am impressed with the profit-generating abilities ofthis franchise, and that they are acting aggressively to put their challenges behind them. Bank of America is focused on their customers and on serving them well. That?s what customers want, and that?s the company?s strategy.?

State Dept. report favors US-Canada oil pipeline (AP)

WASHINGTON ? The Obama administration on Friday removed a major roadblock to a planned $7 billion oil pipeline from western Canada to the Texas coast, saying in a report that the project is unlikely to cause significant environmental problems during construction or operation.

The thousand-page report by the State Department says the proposed 1,700-mile Keystone XL pipeline would have no significant environmental impacts on most natural resources in its six-state path.

Calgary-based TransCanada wants to build a massive pipeline to carry crude oil extracted from tar sands in Alberta to refineries in Texas. The pipeline, which would travel through Montana, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas and Oklahoma, would carry an estimated 700,000 barrels of oil a day, doubling the capacity of an existing pipeline from Canada. Supporters say it could significantly reduce U.S. dependence on Middle Eastern oil.

The project has become a flashpoint for environmental groups who say the pipeline would bring "dirty oil" that requires huge amounts of energy to extract and could cause an ecological disaster in case of a spill. Opponents of the pipeline have urged the Obama administration to block the project as a sign he is serious about protecting the environment.

Several hundred activists, including actress Margot Kidder and prominent scientists, have been arrested in recent days in protests outside the White House. Organizers say the protests are the largest acts of civil disobedience centered on the environment in many years.

TransCanada maintains that the project would create tens of thousands of jobs and would be built to strict environmental standards, including 57 conditions above those required by law.

For example, the company has agreed to build much of the pipeline 4 feet below ground, instead of the usual 3 feet. Depths would increase to 25 feet below the riverbed at more than a dozen major river crossings along the proposed route, including the Yellowstone and Missouri rivers. The pipeline would be built 5 feet underground at several hundred smaller waterways.

TransCanada also said it will allow an increased number of inspections and install a greater number of safety shut-off valves than usual.

The State Department report cites those conditions as among the reasons for its confidence in the project. The report endorses the current proposed route, which has drawn criticism from officials in Nebraska and other states because it passes through the Ogallala Aquifer, an environmentally sensitive formation that provides groundwater to eight states in the Great Plains.

Kerri-Ann Jones, an assistant secretary of state, said the report was "not a rubber stamp for this project," adding, "No decision has been made."

The report, the third environmental analysis submitted by the State Department since last year, kicks off a 90-day review of whether the project is in the "national interest" before a final decision is issued by the end of the year.

If approved by Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, the pipeline could be completed in 2013. The department has authority over the project because it crosses an international boundary.

In in its analysis, the State Department dismissed concerns from environmental groups that the pipeline would increase emissions of greenhouse gases blamed for global warming. Canada's oil sands are likely to be developed with or without the pipeline, the report said, making concerns about climate change moot.

"There are alternatives to the pipeline to move that potential fuel around" to other locations, Jones said, including barges, railways and tanker ships.

The American Petroleum Institute said the report brought the pipeline one step closer to reality. Charles Drevna, president of the National Petrochemical & Refiners Association, said the pipeline would "bring American consumers a sure and steady supply of oil from our close friend and neighbor Canada."

James Hansen, a NASA scientist who was an early crusader against climate change, said allowing the Keystone XL pipeline would be like accepting a dirty needle from a fellow oil addict, Canada.

"If Obama chooses the dirty needle it will confirm that Obama was just greenwashing all along, with no real intention of solving the addiction," he said.

Men, women get equal care with 'Get With The Guidelines', study finds

ScienceDaily (Aug. 23, 2011) ? Women received nearly the same quality of care as men at hospitals using the American Heart Association's Get With The Guidelines?-Heart Failure program, according to a study reported in Circulation: Heart Failure, an American Heart Association journal.

The study also found that women were no more likely to die in the hospital than men.

"We've previously had little data on the quality of care women hospitalized with heart failure receive in the hospital and we had no idea if they were receiving the same quality of care as men," said Liviu Klein, M.D., M.S., lead author of the study and a cardiologist at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago. "We're happy to find that for the most part they are."

Nearly six million Americans suffer from heart failure, a condition in which the heart doesn't pump blood as well as it should. Women account for half of this patient population and for about half of the hospital admissions for heart failure.

Researchers looked at records of 99,841 patients treated for heart failure between January 2005 and June 2009 at 247 hospitals participating in Get With The Guidelines-Heart Failure program.

They calculated each hospital's use of measures that can improve a patient's quality of care and outcome and found that women were as likely as men to receive:

  • written discharge instructions, including activity level, diet, follow-up appointment, weight monitoring and what to do if symptoms worsen;
  • medication for left ventricular systolic dysfunction, specifically angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors, angiotensin receptor blockers or beta blockers; and
  • smoking cessation counseling.

Men and women also had the same chance -- about 3 percent -- of dying in the hospital. But women were less likely than men to receive:

  • blood-thinners for an irregular heartbeat, known as atrial fibrillation;
  • measurement of how well the heart pumps out blood, known as ejection fraction;
  • implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs) to detect and correct an abnormal fast heartbeat.

Women admitted for heart failure were generally older than men, (average age 74 vs. 69), more likely to have hypertension (77 percent vs. 72 percent) and less likely to have coronary disease (44 percent vs. 53 percent) or renal insufficiency (18 percent vs. 23 percent).

Although less than a quarter of patients admitted with heart failure had procedures performed during their hospital stay, women were significantly less likely than men to undergo any procedure (18 percent vs. 25 percent).

Underuse of blood thinners for atrial fibrillation is a concern because women have a higher risk for stroke, a serious complication of atrial fibrillation, said Klein, who is also an assistant professor at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine

"But there's nothing apparent from our study as to why women were less likely to receive any of these treatments," he said. "We also aren't sure why women had a 10 percent higher chance of being hospitalized for more than a week. The gender gap for this and other measures will require further study."

The overall findings highlight a bigger problem: Although the use of quality of care measures improved continuously for men and women over the study's five years, even men didn't always receive the recommended blood thinners for atrial fibrillation or ICDs. About two-thirds of men received blood thinners and fewer than half received ICDs.

"Our ongoing analyses of the more than 3.5 million patient records in the Get With The Guidelines database offers proof that quality improvement programs lead to better care and patient outcomes," said Lee H. Schwamm, M.D., chair of the Get With The Guidelines National Steering Committee and director of the TeleStroke and Acute Stroke Services at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, Mass. "Healthcare providers can easily see how programs like Get With The Guidelines can improve overall care, identify any gender or ethnic disparities in care delivery in their own practices, and help them find solutions to eliminate them."

(AP) ? With the New York Giants comfortably ahead in the closing seconds of the first half, all cornerback Terrell Thomas and the rest of the defense had to do was get through 35 seconds.

What's that three plays? Four plays?

Thomas lasted just one, and on a night the New York Giants posted an impressive 41-13 win over the Chicago Bears, the only thing that seemed to matter was that Thomas' season came to an end after a fluke collision with teammate Jason Pierre-Paul.

Forget that the Giants' offense woke up or that the defense was solid or the special teams outstanding.

It wasn't nearly enough to make up for the season-ending knee injury to a starting cornerback and the Giants leading tackler last season.

Thomas tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee with 22 seconds left in the first half, becoming just the latest Giants cornerback to go down.

"Any injury, you feel sorry for a fellow teammate," said veteran cornerback Aaron Ross, who will move into the starting lineup for Thomas. "ACL, or any injury with the knee, is serious. Terrell is a big part of this defense. Losing him is a big hurt to the team."

Giants coach Tom Coughlin was asked about having Thomas on the field so late in the half, but he insisted his starters were supposed to be on the field for 25 to 30 plays and Thomas was in that range.

The rest of the game was outstanding as the Giants (1-1) bounced back from a so-so performance against Carolina with a very good effort against the Bears (1-1).

"We were going against a good defense," said Giants quarterback Eli Manning, who completed 8 of 16 passes for 78 yards. "I was pleased with a couple of our drives and what we were able to accomplish."

Special teams played a major role.

Brandon Jacobs scored on an 18-yard run after a 73-yard kickoff return by Devin Thomas, and Domenik Hixon caught a 5-yard touchdown pass after rookie linebacker Greg Jones blocked a punt late in the first half.

"We made a lot of big plays tonight. I was glad to see so many guys make strong contributions," Coughlin said.

David Carr, who is competing with Sage Rosenfels for the backup job behind Manning, threw two touchdown passes, with the second covering 17 yards to Daniel Coats in the fourth quarter.

D.J. Ware scored on a 1-yard run early in the third quarter to give New York a 27-6 lead and rookie halfback Da'Rel Scott had a 97-yard run in the closing minutes after cancer survivor Mark Herzlich intercepted a pass near the goal line.

Robbie Gould had field goals of 23 and 42 yards for the Bears, who struggled again on offense despite having Jay Cutler (12 of 21 for 171 yards) play the entire first half.

Chicago got its only touchdown in the final minute on a 1-yard run by Kahlil Bell, but the Bears offensive line showed improvement, allowing only one sack after giving up nine in a win over Buffalo last week.

"We definitely haven't had many nights like this," Bears coach Lovie Smith said. "We have to tackle, we have to play better, and I better stop now, because there's a lot of things we didn't do right on defense. But we'll move on."

In the final year of his contract, Thomas was hurt on the very next play from scrimmage after Hixon caught his touchdown pass. It was Hixon's first catch at the New Meadowlands Stadium since he tore an ACL in a practice in June 2010.

Down 20-6 with 35 seconds to play in the half, Cutler went back to pass from his own 23 and rolled a little to his left.

Thomas came on a blitz and Pierre-Paul rushed from his end spot. Cutler got the pass off and Thomas and Pierre-Paul collided, with the second-year end hitting Thomas around the knee from an awkward angle.

Thomas went down and he started hobbling when he got back up. He quickly went down on the artificial surface and was treated by trainers and medical personnel for a couple of minutes.

When he got up, he walked gingerly to the locker room. The suddenness of the diagnosis stunned his coach and teammates.

"I don't think he's someone you can just replace," safety Antrel Rolle said.

"You have to understand this comes with the game of football. It comes with the territory. It leaves room for other guys to step up. It's going to alter our defense a little bit. We can't hang our heads. We still have a lot of football to play."

Thomas is the fourth Giants cornerback to get hurt this year. Backup Bruce Johnson tore an Achilles' tendon early in camp.

First-round draft pick Prince Amukamara broke his foot and won't be available until about mid-October. Free agent Brian Witherspoon sprained his left knee against the Bears and will have an MRI on Tuesday.

Ware's touchdown came a play after a challenge by Coughlin resulted in a fumble call being reversed. Rhys Lloyd added field goals of 25 and 37 yards, subbing for the injured Lawrence Tynes.

The teams exchanged field goals in the first quarter before Thomas' big return set up Jacobs' go-ahead touchdown on a play Manning changed at the line of scrimmage. Jacobs finished with 48 yards on six carries.

"We just wanted to hit it hard, at the point where the blockers made contact," Devin Thomas said, "so you could get in there when they move the guy out of the way and keep going."

After failing to get a first down on either of their first two series, the Giants took a 3-0 lead by holding the ball for almost 7 1/2 minutes before settling for Lloyd's 25-yard field goal. The key play on the 11-play drive was a 21-yard fourth down pass from Manning to Victor Cruz that gave New York a first down at the Bears 11.

The Bears tied the game on the next series with a quick six-play drive that started with Cutler passes of 37 yards to Devin Hester and 42 yards to Matt Forte. Gould kicked a 23-yard field goal after the drive stalled at the 5-yard line.

Cutler was knocked out of last year's regular-season game against the Giants with a concussion on a night when the offensive line allowed 10 sacks, including nine in the first half.

"It feels good to leave here upright, yeah," Cutler said. "It was a little different personnel tonight out there, but it's good to be upright, yes."

What exactly Should I Do About Anxiety Disorder? ? Health & Fitness

Everyone has the concern about conducting ourselves the wrong way in public or failing to say the right thing at the right place to the correct person. And we all imagine that our choice of words may well fail us. Many times after coming back home we think that we may have used better words to convey a specific point. But that?s fine. You do not have to be worried about these small qualms.

It is just when the fear of them gets disabling that you need to take it seriously because therefore you could be suffering from a panic or anxiety disorder.

Some of the symptoms of the condition tend to be breathlessness, a rise in the heart rate, feverishness, chest pain, sweating in excess and so on. Sometimes, one may possibly experience minor delusions. Anxiety disorders might cause one to stay secluded, which could result in depression. And sometimes depression gets too serious to deal with and can push a person into taking extreme steps, which might be lethal.

So, not just is an anxiety disorder serious, but the issues associated with it may be also fatal. Therefore, as soon as you come across the signs and symptoms, it is advisable that you simply seek medical assistance to get over the condition.

You can find effective treatment options designed for it which includes of therapy and also medication. Although medication is usually the first thing a specialist would advise one to take but in such instances when the anxiety becomes unmanageable, anti-depressants could be recommended for a short period of time.

Cognitive behavioral therapy is looked upon as the most beneficial cure. It involves making the patient knowingly identify the issue and take corrective steps to eliminate it. This approach wants the sufferer to become an active participant. It?s not a pop-the-pill process but is incredibly effective.

There are several approaches to give effect to the treatment. On many occasions, the person is requested by the therapist to visualize themselves in a situation that?s likely to give themselves an anxiety attack. They are required to cope with the situation. As soon as the fear is countered headlong, the condition has a tendency to disappear. The thinking pattern and the response to the specific situation are transformed in such a way the individual ceases fearing and the problem is actually cured permanently. One of the benefits of this method is that one comes to discover how to cope with one?s fears if and when they occur to haunt one again.

Therefore, if you see the symptoms, you should not ignore them. There is enough help available out there to be sure the anxiety disorder can definitely end up being treated permanently.

Anti-Gaddafi protests in Tripoli streets: residents

ALGIERS (Reuters) - Crowds of opponents of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi were in the streets of the capital Tripoli late on Saturday and gunfire could be heard from multiple locations, two residents told Reuters.

Mobile telephone subscribers received a text message from the government urging them to "go out in the squares and streets to eliminate the armed agents," according to one resident who received the message on his phone.

Top Three Reasons to Support Ohio Senate Bill 5 (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | Voting "Yes" on Issue 2 this fall supports the fiscally responsible initiatives contained in Ohio Senate Bill 5. Union fear-mongering caused public employees around the state to quake in their shoes, worrying how they will feed their families and pay for mortgages.

Erroneous and inflammatory statements made by We Are Ohio representative Melissa Fazekas and the liberal ProgressOhio group leave many taxpayers stymied over the intent of the bill. Once the SB5 measures are enacted, Ohio taxpayers will save money, public employees will still earn a living wage and spending decisions will be controlled at the local level.

Top Three Reasons to Support Ohio Senate Bill 5

Elimination of Costly Binding Arbitration

The process of binding arbitration does not benefit local taxpayers or improve services provided by public employees. Taxpayers are forced to pay for union contracts which are not affordable. The ability of a school district to afford a presented contract is not a major factor during the binding arbitration process. Senate Bill 5 will place contract dispute decisions directly into the hands of lawmakers elected by the taxpayers. For the first time, Ohioans will have the ability to "fire" those who enter into contracts deemed either too expensive or unfair to workers when they visit their local polling place. A faceless arbitrator simply settles a dispute and then moves onto the next case, without concern for local economic impact.

Elimination of Teacher Tenure

Ohio public school children will not be forced to endure instruction by teachers who are not deemed capable by a streamlined evaluation process. Collective bargaining protection known as "tenure" protects teachers who receive poor evaluations and reprimands. The case of Eric B. Brentlinger perfectly demonstrates the problems with "tenured" teachers. Brentlinger was reprimanded in 1989 for abusive actions toward students. The educator received subsequent reprimands through 2006 when the administration offered a "last chance" written agreement which detailed the need to stop "manhandling," yelling and pushing the special needs students in his classroom. Brentlinger was offered another "last chance" in 2007 after challenging a student to a fight. The district administration moved him to a position in a textbook warehouse until he was rehired for a classroom vacancy in 2010. There is no other career path besides teaching which allows an employee to keep their job regardless of performance or threats of physical violence to minors.

Local Control

Despite what union spokespeople are saying, collective bargaining will not be eliminated. Ohio Issue 2 will simply reform the 30-year-old law. Since passage of the law a bevy of federal laws have been passed which protect public employees from discrimination, wage improprieties and unsafe workplaces; issues which collective bargaining was initially designed to address. Public workers will still have the right to bargain as a group for hours, wages and conditions of employment. Ohio Senate Bill 5 creates a balanced approach between the desires of governmental workers and the ability of Ohio taxpayers to fund services. Local school districts and communities will truly be in the driver's seat when it comes to making financial and employment decisions. Taxpayers can share their views with decision makers during school board meetings and choose to "hire" board members who make fair and fiscally responsible decisions during the election process.

Q&A: In college, should you take the science ... - Education Reference

Question by Judy: In college, should you take the science lecture and lab courses during the same semester?
Should I take the Biology Lecture and Biology Lab courses in the same semester?

I?m not all that great at Science and it?s been a few years since I?ve taken a science course. Is it easier to understand the information when you take both the lab and lecture together?

Best answer:

Answer by the_lookouts
In both my community college and in my state college it is required that you take both concurrently. Generally they won?t allow you to take one before the other (unless you failed one when taken previously). It?s pretty helpful to take both at the same time? as a person who science isn?t their optimal subject, one class simply reinforces the other one. It gives you two alternatives to learn the material and two different instructors who present it differently (which I like, in case one is less effective than the other).

Things to Expect When Transforming into a Grandparent For The very ...
