Jury issues guilty verdict in murder of military staff sergeant

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

A 28-year-old Richland County man was found guilty Wednesday of murdering his girlfriend and placing her body on the front lawn of his Northeast Columbia home.

After only three hours of jury deliberation, Marcus Bailey was sentenced to 50 years in prison for the murder of 26-year-old Almanita Smith, a Columbia College graduate and staff sergeant in the military.

Investigators were already looking for Smith before her body was located at Bailey's residence on Heron Glen Road in the early morning hours of Aug. 23, 2012. She was last seen on Aug. 16. She had been dead for several days.

Investigators had called Smith's death a tragic example of domestic violence.
