2012 a good year for Caribbean Cricket ? Part I

The rise of West Indies to the ICC World T20 Champions is the outstanding feature of a great year, which also saw the Men from Caribbean challenging the world cricket giants, Australia and England, before taking the best of the struggling New Zealanders across all the three formats.

The Windies signed off their memorable 2012 season with an 18-run win in the lone T20 International against the lowly ranked Bangladesh at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur, Dhaka, on Monday, December 10, 2012.

Here we will have a look at all the series the men from Caribbean have played this year.

Australia in West Indies ODI Series, 2011/12

The Windies started the prosperous 2012 with a drawn five-match ODI series against the rampaging Australians in March.

The first One Day International of the series played at the Arnos Vale Ground, Kingstown, St Vincent saw Darren Sammy and men facing a 64-run crushing at the hands of the mighty Aussies, as the hosts failed to chase down a middling 205-run target set by George Bailey led visiting line-up. Xavier Doherty was the pick of Australian bowlers returning with figures of 4 for 49, as the whole West Indies side was rolled over for just 140 in 32.2 overs. Bailey was adjudged as the Player of the Match for his meticulous 48 off 67 on a St Vincent that had little to offer to the batsmen.

Mystery spinner Sunil Narine?s four-wicket haul, well complemented by Kieron Pollard?s unbeaten 47 allowed the Windies square the series 1-1 with a five-wicket win in the rain-affected second match of the series. After putting the tourists into bat, the Sunil Narine-led Windies attack restricted the Aussie batters to 154 for 9 in their revised quota of 40 overs. David Hussey top scored for the tourists with a painstaking 37, coming off 62 deliveries. In reply, a 64-run stand between Dwayne Bravo (30) and Kieron Pollard (47*) for the fifth wicket, eased West Indies? way to a five-wicket win with ten balls to spare. Rookie off-spinner Sunil Narine bagged the Man of the Match accolade for his four-wicket haul.

The third One Day International of the five-match series ended in a rare draw with both the sides managing to score 220 all out. After opting to bat first, the Aussies rode on half centuries from Mike Hussey (67) and George Bailey (59) to post a respectable total, before being bowled out in 49.5 overs. Sunil Narine was once again the pick of home attack with figures of 3 for 32. He was well supported by Kemar Roach and Marlon Samuels, both picking up two wickets each. In reply, Johnson Charles smashed a 56-ball 45, studded with seven fours and a six, while Kieron Pollard, Carlton Baugh and Andre Russell all scored valuable 30s to take the Windies to 220 in 49.4 overs. Skipper Darren Sammy was the last man the hosts lost. He was run out by Lee off Bailey?s throw. Australia?s Mike Hussey claimed the Man of the Match award.

The fourth ODI of the series was won by the hosts by 42 runs, courtesy Kieron Pollard?s brisk century, studded with five fours and eight sixes. Chasing West Indies? hefty 294 for 7, the whole Australian batting line-up was bundled out for 252 in 46.3 overs.

The tourists came back strongly in the fifth and final encounter of the series winning by 30 runs to draw the series 2-2. After setting a competitive target of 282 to win, courtesy half centuries from the top three batsmen, the Aussies bundled out the hosts for just 251.
