D'Arcy asking for prayers as he battles rare form of cancer

FORT WAYNE -- The retired bishop of the Fort Wayne-South Bend Catholic Diocese says he's battling a rare form of cancer and is asking for prayers as he undergoes treatment.

Bishop Emeritus John D'Arcy announced early this month that he had been diagnosed with cancer in his lungs and brain. The disease was discovered when he went to a Boston-area hospital after feeling ill while visiting relatives.

He updated his condition in a statement issued this week. He says he is receiving radiation treatments and that doctors are considering chemotherapy.

"I have a very rare form of cancer," D'Arcy said in the statement. "Very rare. It is quick striking and came as a surprise, 'like a thief in the night' as the Scripture says."

D'Arcy asks for prayers that he can accept

"whatever is to come" and expresses thanks for his faith and family.

The 80-year-old D'Arcy was treated for prostate cancer in 2011. He retired in 2010 after leading the diocese for 24 years.
