Sony Xperia Tablet Z was first announced at the Mobile World Congress in February. Sony claims that their new flagship tablet is the world's thinnest 10.1-inch tablet at only 0.27 inches and also the world's lightest at 1.1 pounds. (The Apple iPad weighs 1.44 pounds, per PC Mag.) The splashy new device also boasts the highest levels of water resistance ever for a tablet; it's water resistant in up to 3 feet of water for 30 minutes at a time
Sony Xperia Tablet Z comes with a 10.1-inch HD WUXGA Display powered by Mobile BRAVIA Engine 2, according to Sony's press release. It includes an 8MP rear camera featuring "Exmor R for mobile" as well as a 2MP HD front-facing camera. The tablet features Sony's S-Force Front Surround 3D, creating a surround sound effect. There is also Sony's Clear Audio+ mode and two built-in speakers with four "speaker halls" on the left and right corners.
Sony Xperia Tablet Z is the first tablet to run on Qualcomm's Snapdragon S4 Pro asynchronous quad core processor, per Sony's press release. The Tablet Z will launch with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, but Sony will upgrade to 4.2 after the launch, PC Mag reported.
"Xperia Tablet Z sets new standards in entertainment by matching premium specifications and Sony technology with cross-device connectivity and a consistent user-experience," Kaz Tajima, corporate vice president, head of UX Creative Design and Planning, at Sony Mobile Communications, said in the press release. "Xperia Tablet Z reinforces our intention to be a leading player in the premium Android device market, by building on the principles established by Xperia Z and perfectly optimising them for the tablet form factor."
Meanwhile, Blackberry CEO Thorsten Heins is not jumping on the tablet bandwagon, despite the rising popularity of Apple and Android tablets. "In five years I don't think there'll be a reason to have a tablet anymore. Maybe a big screen in your workplace, but not a tablet as such," he told Bloomberg in an interview at the Milken Institute conference in Los Angeles, according to Te chradar.
"Tablets themselves are not a good business model," Heins said.
Instead, Blackberry will focus on their smartphones with the launch of the Blackberry Q10, which Heins expects to sell in the "tens of millions", according to Techradar. "In five years, I see BlackBerry to be the absolute leader in mobile computing -- that's what we're aiming for," said Heins.
