2011 Estoril MotoGP Saturday Press Release Round Up

Press releases from the MotoGP teams after qualifying on Saturday:

Edwards and Crutchlow storm to third row in Estoril

Colin Edwards produced his best qualifying performance of the 2011 MotoGP World Championship in Estoril today, the American surging to a brilliant seventh position on the grid for tomorrow's Portuguese Grand Prix.

And Monster Yamaha Tech 3 team-mate Cal Crutchlow equalled his best qualifying result of his outstanding rookie campaign after the British rider set the eighth quickest time in this afternoon's session.

With small damp patches still littering sections of the 2.599 miles circuit after torrential overnight rain, Edwards and Crutchlow expertly built up their speed to qualify within 0.109s of each other at the end of a typically captivating MotoGP qualifying session.

Edwards ended with a fastest time of 1.38.080 and once again the experienced Texan was the leading non-factory rider in the ultra-competitive MotoGP field. His time was only 0.007s away from the second row as he experimented with different front-end settings throughout the hour-long session to find better turning performance with his YZR-M1 machine.

Crutchlow caught the eye once again with his all-action style thrilling a sizeable Saturday crowd ahead of tomorrow's 28-lap race. He was able to lap consistently inside the top ten throughout as forecast rain held off, despite dark clouds hanging menacingly over the track.

Just over a minute remained when Crutchlow stormed into sixth position with a lap of 1.38.190. But he was bumped back to the third row by a late burst of speed from factory Honda rider Andrea Dovizioso and Edwards. He managed to lap marginally quicker on his final lap to qualify eighth and for the third r ace in succession, the 2009 World Supersport champion will start in front of Italian Valentino Rossi.

Tomorrow's race is the third round of the 2011 MotoGP World Championship following the recent postponement of the Japanese MotoGP race, scheduled to take place on April 24.

Colin Edwards 7th 1.38.080 ? 27 laps

"That's my best qualifying result of the season so far, so I'm happy about that when you consider how strong the field is this year. I gave it everything I had out there even though conditions weren't perfect. There were still a couple of damp patches on the track, especially at the last corner, and I couldn't take my normal line. It is the same for everybody but in a couple of places where I had to alter my line, it threw me out of my rhythm a little bit. Even with the track a bit patchy I was able to go fas ter than I managed yesterday, so thanks again to my guys in the Monster Yamaha Tech 3 Team. They did an awesome job and the bike feels good and in those conditions I don't think we could have gone any faster. We made a couple of changes to the front in that session and we need to sit down and look at the data to see if I'll run that set-up in the race. We might need to make another modification for the race because I'd still like the bike to turn into the corner a little better. To be right behind the factory bikes is all I can do and my team is doing a fantastic job to help get as close to the front as I am."

Cal Crutchlow 8th 1.38.189 ? 25 laps

"I don't think I could have gone any faster or put in any extra effort than I did. And if I can keep coming to circuits that I've never seen and qualifying inside the top ten, I'm going to be really happy. At one point it look ed like I might get my first second row, but to be in between Colin and Valentino on the grid for my first race here, I've got to be really happy. I pretty much lost a session too because I only did a couple of laps in the wet this morning. It wasn't worth taking any big risks and I don't think I've ever been so happy to finish last. It is not easy on this track and I'm finding it quite physical. I'm still having some issues with arm pump in my right arm and to compensate I'm using my left arm a lot and that is stressing the shoulder I had an operation on during the winter. There's no real time to relax and when you're braking from 200mph to 30mph, it is really physically demanding on the arms and shoulders. I'm really looking forward to the race now and hopefully I can reward the team with a good result after all their effort again this weekend. My aim for tomorrow will be to finish in the top ten and get some more experience of the bike under my belt."

Four in a Row For Lorenzo with Pole Again in Estoril

Yamaha Factory Racing rider Jorge Lorenzo made it clear today he wasn't ready to give up his record of dominance in Estoril. This afternoon's qualifying for tomorrow's Grand Prix of Portugal saw the reigning World Champion place his YZR-M1 on pole position for an incredible fourth consecutive time.

The threat of rain again this afternoon saw all riders on the pace quickly, looking to score a fast lap before the weather changed. Lorenzo started the session the fastest rider, then spent some time duelling with team mate Spies for second and third before delivering a decisive 1'37.161 to secure pole. The achievement means Lorenzo now has the record for the Spanish rider with most pole position starts in all GP classes in the modern era with 43. This is also his 17th MotoGP pole position start, equalling Dani Pedrosa, a record for Spanish riders in the premier class.

Fellow Yamaha Factory rider Spies was also on full attack this afternoon. After a challenging start to his first dry sessions on the Estoril circuit yesterday, Spies made big steps forward in today's qualifying. The Texan's crew worked hard from the morning's free practice session to deliver a competitive set up that gave Spies the opportunity to challenge the top riders for grid position. Having spent some time in the one hour heat contesting the second place spot with his team mate, Spies eventually settled for fifth at the end and a second row start for tomorrow's race.

Jorge Lorenzo

Position : 1st Time: 1'37.161 Laps: 29

"Today has been complicated; I've got it just by a tenth in the end, managing five good laps with the softer tyre. The most important thing is the race though, not that I have 43 pole position starts. This track is strange to ride on, quite old with lots of holes so you have to ride with care. I need a good start tomorrow, be focussed, intelligent and have good luck. The bike is improving, it's much better in fast corners but we could be faster on the straight."

Ben Spies

Position : 5th Time: 1'37.866 Laps: 29

"It was a good session for us; we definitely made the bike better after we've been struggling a bit this weekend. I knew we were capable of it if we got the bike working with the right set up. We're not 100% but I'm happy to be in the middle of the second row. Hopefully we can get a good start and put together a good race. I'm definitely feeling a lot better after qualifying than I did yesterday."

Wilco Zeelenberg

Team Manager

"The first pole of the season so of course we are very satisfied with it. We know Jorge is good here at Estoril but our mission is to be on the podium and keep our unbroken podium finish run alive. Of course to have pole is nice but tomorrow is the race, it will be a difficult one so it is important to start well."

Massimo Meregalli

Team Director

"A good improvement today, Ben delivered an impressive qualifying session. Now we have a rider on first and second row which is a good starting point for the race. Here it is not easy to overtake people so it is very important that we have these positions. Jorge started yesterday determined and he finished qualifying today the same way with a really impressive result."

Superhuman effort from Bautista in qualifying

Publish Date: Saturday, April 30, 2011

Rizla Suzuki's ?lvaro Bautista produced another heroic performance at Estoril today to qualify his Suzuki GSV-R only two-seconds away from pole position.

Bautista (P15, 1'39.172, 27 laps) improved on yesterday's lap-time by a second during this afternoon's qualifying session, a feat made even more impressive by the fact that Spaniard chose to miss this morning's final free practice session due to the difficult conditions. Bautista improved steadily throughout qualifying and produced his best time on his penultimate lap of the afternoon. He ended the session very tired, but again reported no pain from the femur he broke last month.

Today's qualifying was held in dry and overcast conditions, with track temperatures reaching 26?C. The Estoril circuit still had some damp patches around its 4,182m length this afternoon, due to a heavy overnight rainstorm that soaked the circuit making it very difficult for all riders this morning and too dangerous for Bautista to risk taking to the track in his condition. Pole position was set by reigning World Champion and current championship leader Jorge Lorenzo on a factory Yamaha.

Tomorrow's 28-lap Portuguese Grand Prix is the third round of the season, but will mark Bautista's 2011 race debut when he takes to the track for the scheduled 13.00hr local time (12.00hr GMT) start.

?lvaro Bautista:

"Yet again I am very happy with what has happened today. This morning was a bit disappointing because the conditions were not very good, as the track was not wet, but it was not dry either. We decided not to go out in the third practice because it was too risky and we don't need to risk anything here this weekend. This afternoon was really my third practice and I was able to start with the same lap-time as yesterday, but my rhythm was a lot more consistent. The track was still a bit damp in parts this afternoon, especially the first and last corners and the track grip was not as good as yesterday, so even though the lap-time was the same it meant that I had improved because the conditions were worse. At the end of the session my feeling had improved so I was able to push a bit more and I was able to go a second quicker than yesterday, so I am very happy about that. I feel a lot more tired today than I did yesterday, I really noticed the extra 15 minutes in the session. I need to recover for the race so I will go to the Clinica Mobile for some treatment and then get some rest. For tomorrow I hope for good weather and my target is to finish the race, I do not care about the position I just want to finish. I know I will suffer because 28-laps is a long way, but it is my target and I want to do it!"

Paul Denning ? Team Manager:

"As we said yesterday the effort to be ready to even ride this weekend was brave, but to qualify within two seconds of pole and in front of a couple of other guys is an amazing result. Apart from his injury, ?lvaro has also had a lack of time on the bike compared to the guys that have competed in Qatar and Spain, and missing this morning's session because of the impossible conditions didn't really help him either. The target for tomorrow is to complete the race, move his fitness on to a higher level and get properly ready for the busy races in June. If we can achieve in the race what we did in qualifying today it was be as good ? if not better ? than we could possibly have expected."

Lorenzo clinches Estoril pole on harder front and softer rear slicks

Round 3: Portuguese GP ? Qualifying

Estoril Circuit, Saturday 30 April 2011

Bridgestone slick compounds available: Front: Soft, Medium. Rear (asymmetric): Medium, Hard

For the second day running in Portugal the rain stayed away from the Estoril circuit despite very ominous weather, and although the morning practice session was damp, the qualifying session was dry.

Jorge Lorenzo used Bridgestone's harder front and softer rear slicks to secure himself pole position for tomorrow's race just ahead of Marco Simoncelli. It was Simoncelli who for a long time was dominating the hour-long session and looked to be on course for his first premier class pole, until a crash in the crucial last minutes allowed Lorenzo to get the better of him by just over 0.1seconds.

Despite yesterday evening's thunderstorms and more overnight rain which left the track damp and dirty this morning, the laptimes were good and Lorenzo's pole time was just 0.2seconds from the lap record as the times tumbled in the closing stages.

Completing the front row is Dani Pedrosa, who finished just 0.03seconds behind Simoncelli, with Repsol Honda teammate Casey Stoner in fourth. Almost all riders set their best laps on the harder front and all favoured the softer rear slicks. Just two tenths of a second cover the top four which is a good indication that it will be a close-fought race.

Whilst the weather for tomorrow remains uncertain, riders have at least now had the chance to use Bridgestone's wet tyres this weekend.

Tohru Ubukata ? General Manager, Bridgestone Motorsport Tyre Development Department

"This morning's practice session started with the track 60-70 per cent wet, but conditions were tricky because some parts of the lap were wet and others quite dry which made it very difficult to use the wet tyres correctly. Nevertheless performance was reasonable, what we expected, and Loris and Jorge completed 10 and 11 laps respectively and consistency and wear appearance was good. For the qualifying session, it was dry but the track conditions were not perfect because of the overnight rain and the temperature was cold. Most riders favoured the combination of harder option front and softer rear slicks and I am happy with tyre performance as Jorge's pole lap was only 0.2seconds from the lap record in less than ideal conditions. We could also confirm race-distance durability of the softer option rear, so if the conditions tomorrow are similar to today the softer rear slick is a viable option for the race."

Karel Abraham will start from the 4th row on the grid

The Czech motorcycle rider Karel Abraham finished 12th in the qualifying practice and produced his best qualifying performance of the season.

With dark clouds over the Estoril circuit, Karel Abraham made significant progress during qualifying practice and set a best time of 1:38,786, which placed him in the 12th place on the grid of the Grand Prix of Portugal.

"Although we were not able to improve our time at the end of the qualifying, we are very satisfied with the result," said Karel Abraham after his return to the garage.

Mechanics of the Cardion AB Motoracing team worked on the set-up of the Ducati Desmosedici GP11 again, but this time they had problems caused by adversed weather.

"Unfortunately, we had problem with the set-up of the motorcycle. Tomorrow we will try to solve this problem and then we will see what the weather will be before the race ," added the Czech motorcycle rider, reffering to the weather forecast for tomorrow.

Repsol Honda Team on 1st and 2nd rows in Estoril

Tomorrow, the three Repsol Honda riders will start the Grand Prix of Portugal from the first and second rows of the grid. Dani Pedrosa made an impressive lap time, achieving a front row start for the third consecutive time this season. This morning in wet conditions he focused on the set up of his RC212V and completed just 11 laps in order to save some energy for his shoulder so that he could push more in Qualifying.

Casey Stoner, 4th at just 0.060 from his team mate and Andrea Dovizioso, 6th, will both start from the second row. Neither rider was able to use their soft tyre at their best, but both remain confident for the race. Casey continued working on the set up to find a better balance under braking and mid corner speed, improving in the second part of the session. Andrea improved stability in the front and was able to push more in the afternoon.

Track conditions were tricky today: after last night's rain, the track was semi dry this morning with some wet spots. It was completely dry during Qualifying but slightly dirty and with lack of grip. Weather forecast for tomorrow is still uncertain and there is some possibility of rain.

With 8 riders within 1 second, tomorrow will be tough but the Repsol Honda riders are ready for the 28 lap race, that will start at 13:00 local time.

DANI PEDROSA ? 3rd 1'37.324

"I'm very satisfied with this front row today. It was a very close session as it always is in this circuit and our main target this afternoon was to be on the front row, so I'm happy about this. For tomorrow, we will try to set up our bike a bit better for the race distance. I know that physically it will be tough for me because after the recent surgery my shoulder has improved a little but it is still very stiff and the muscles hurt. Anyway, I hope to be able to stay with Lorenzo because for sure he will be consistant and that will be one of the key points in the race. The weather is nothing that we can change, so we will need to also be ready to do our best in any condition".

CASEY STONER ? 4th 1'37.384

"Today hasn't really been that great for us either, this morning's session was pretty much a waste of time we were just working on our wet setting that we weren't really happy with in Jerez. We improved that situation a little and we can hopefully expect a better feeling next time in wet conditions. This afternoon we continued on from yesterday, trying to find a better balance under braking and mid-turn corner speed but it wasn't until towards the middle, end of session that we started to make some improvements with the bike. Every time I went out the balance didn't feel correct so we tried to go in another direction, finally we found the right route and we improved a little bit more each run after that, but unfortunately I wasn't able to use the qualifying tyre like I wanted to. When I went out there with the only new tyre that we had for the session, I made a few mistakes in the early laps so didn't really use the best of the tyre. I think the race potential is there now and hopefully we can have a good race tomorrow".

ANDREA DOVIZIOSO ? 6th 1'38.073

"It was important to start from a good position so I'm happy to start from the second row tomorrow. We worked on the setting and stability in the front improved so I could push more this afternoon, compared with yesterday. I rode quite consistently but I wasn't able to gain some more tenths and lap under 1'38". We have two points we would like to work on tomorrow so I hope that the track conditions are fine during the warm up. Today's result gives us more confidence for the race after a difficult session yesterday".

FIFTH AND SIXTH ROWS FOR CAPIROSSI AND DE PUNIET

Ducati Pramac Racing Team's day started quite well: Loris Capirossi concluded the third free-practice session in first place, with the best time of 1:44.515. In the afternoon qualifying session, the white-and-green-dressed rider lowered his time further (also compared to yesterday's session), but nonetheless finished in 14th place with a lap time of 1:38.934. He'll therefore start from the fifth row. Meanwhile, Randy De Puniet continues to have trouble with the front end. The Frenchman, still struggling with pain in his knee after having a screw removed in early April, will start from the last row, having stopped the clock at 1:39.373.

Fabiano Sterlacchini - Pramac Racing Team Technical Director

"It's a little like in football: you construct a nice attack on the goal, but you can't really enjoy it if you don't score. Loris' ideal time would have been 1:38.3, but it was all compromised by a braking error. We were a little unfortunate, and the weather conditions made it difficult to work. The third row was within our grasp. That said, we remain confident. We worked well, especially this morning. I expect a good performance tomorrow."

Loris Capirossi - Pramac Racing Team ? 14th, 1:38.934

"The fact that we're starting to understand the bike better is positive. I was doing my best lap when I made a stupid mistake: I braked too late, and the bike started to hop. It's really a shame, because we all could have been more satisfied. The fact remains that we've seen progress. We can do well tomorrow."

Randy De Puniet - Pramac Racing Team ? 16th, 1'39.378

"I'm not happy. I don't have a good feeling with the bike, especially the front. We tried different solutions compared to yesterday, but the result is always the same. The back end is better, but it's not perfect. We have to continue working and try to solve these problems, because we're not satisfied."

REAR GRIP ISSUES DISRUPTES ELIAS' PERFORMANCE AT ESTORIL GP QUALIFYING

Estoril, 30 April: as predicted heavy rains and strong wind hit the Portuguese race track last night so the premier class riders and teams have found difficult track conditions in today's second day of practices. Most of the riders preferred to sit out this morning free session for safety reasons but the sky looked threatening in the afternoon qualifying session as well with air temperature of 18 degrees (26 on the asphalt).

Low track temperatures and rear grip issues affected LCR Honda MotoGP rider Toni Elias' performance in the 60-minute qualifying session with the Spaniard posting the 17th lap time (1'39.894). After yesterday's positive improvements Elias was hoping for a better spot on the grid but he could not make the most of his RCV in these conditions struggling with rear grip.

Elias ? 17th - 1'39.894: "Unfortunately we are back to our initial set up problems. The track temperature in the afternoon was too low compared with yesterday and we struggled to warm up the rear tyre. Then we have started to have some front grip issues through the session and I was losing the front in many corners. Yesterday I was more positive about my feeling on the bike but in these conditions I could not warm up the rear tyre and I am a bit frustrating now. We'll see if we can fix this problem because I know I can be faster than this".

H?CTOR BARBER? HANGS ON TO YESTERDAY'S TENTH PLACE

MAPFRE Aspar rider ready to give it everything as he looks to follow up positive result at Jerez

There was a subdued start to the second day of practice at the Grand Prix of Portugal this morning as the majority of riders opted to stay in their pit boxes as damp conditions restricted any useful track time during the first half of the morning session. Things were back to normal in the afternoon when a dry track played host to qualifying practice, with Marco Simoncelli continuing his dominance from free practice before a crash late in the session. That left Jorge Lorenzo free to take pole position although he was made to sweat by Dani Pedrosa and Casey Stoner, who made strong late challenges that eventually faded in the final sector and left them positioned behind the Spaniard and the Italian on tomorrow's grid.

MAPFRE Aspar rider H?ctor Barber? was one of several riders who took their time before taking to the track this morning, heading out for the final twenty minutes of the session on slick tyres despite damp areas on the track. Whilst it was drier in the afternoon it was still slippery and the young Spaniard struggled to establish a good feeling with his tyres. However, he made a crucial step forward in the final couple of laps to move into the top ten, finishing up tenth fastest for the second consecutive day and just over a second off pole - the second highest Ducati on the grid.

biography

10th H?ctor Barber? 1.38.363 (27 laps): "We hardly touched the bike set-up today because our feeling yesterday was so good. The only thing we're not sure about is rear tyre choice. The bike is moving around quite a lot on the soft option but I can feel even the tiniest bump on the track with the hard option. We lost a lot of time trying to sort this but even so it was a positive day. I qualified tenth, a little over a second off pole, so on one hand I am quite happy but on the other I'm annoyed because another three tenths would have put me on the second row. The important thing is that I felt comfortable at the end of the session and more or less we have worked out our tyre choice for tomorrow. Now we just need to wait on the weather. The track conditions were quite unstable today and there was a damp patch in turn one that was costing me three tenths."

FRONT ROW FOR SECOND FASTEST "SUPER SIC" AT ESTORIL

Team San Carlo Honda Gresini rider Marco Simoncelli was the star of the show again today at Estoril, dominating qualifying practice until an unfortunate crash on his final flying lap deprived him of his first ever pole position in MotoGP. 'Super Sic' was on top of the time sheets throughout the session with an impressive performance, showing his superiority particularly in the final two sectors of the track. However there is every possibility that he can make up for his disappointment in the race, especially if he can resolve a small problem with the front end. It was also a positive qualifying performance from Hiroshi Aoyama, who showed impressive race pace despite not finishing exactly where he would like on the grid.

Marco Simoncelli (2nd 1'37.294) "There's a bit of disappointment and there's no use hiding it because after dominating the two sessions yesterday and then this afternoon the pole position was in my hands. Unfortunately I made a little mistake which prevented me from improving my fastest lap. Anyway, turning our attention to the race I have to be happy because my race pace is quick and I am confident with the bike even though we have a little problem with the front. The front tyre available to us is a little soft for us and moves around a lot so maybe a harder option would have been better. We have improved the grip on the rear so I think tomorrow we can be fighting for the win if not the podium. To be annoyed at not being on pole position is not a bad thing. Tomorrow will be a tough race but I'm ready to fight and give my all. "

Hiroshi Aoyama (11th 1'38.497) "The track conditions were really difficult with a lot of humidity out there and it was hard to stay on line. Anyway, I found a good set-up and I was quite confident with the tyres ? definitely better than yesterday. We still have a few small problems but we will analyse the data and try to solve them. I could have ended up with a better position but but unfortunately I made a little mistake that cost me a good lap time and a higher placing on the grid."

Fausto Gresini "We have had two fantastic days here so far and now we just have the race to go. Marco has been strong throughout and showed his progress once again. Everybody is really enthusiastic and the only downside today was the crash that prevented him from improving his time and I'm sure from setting pole position. Anyway, it's all part of the game and the important thing is that we know he can have a good race tomorrow and be fighting for the win. Our moment to believe has come. Everything is in place for us to take a major role in the championship."

ROSSI ON THIRD ROW IN ESTORIL, HAYDEN THIRTEENTH

With conditions more variable than they had been on Friday, the two Ducati Marlboro Team riders struggled more than expected to find the best setup during qualifying for the Portuguese Grand Prix.

The third free-practice session, which took place on a mostly wet track, was positive for both riders, with Hayden third and Rossi fourth, while the afternoon session, which was dry but with a slightly dirty track, saw the Italian finish ninth and the American thirteenth.

Valentino Rossi (Ducati Marlboro Team) 9th, 1:38.271

"I'm a little disappointed with my performance today because I expected to get the fifth- or sixth-best time and be on the second row; that was the target. Unfortunately, though, it was a little more difficult than expected, and I wasn't able to ride like I could yesterday since I didn't have as much feeling. I couldn't fight for a position that we would have been happier with. I struggled a little with the track conditions, as I didn't have enough grip, especially on the front, and we're trying to understand why. For tomorrow, we have to try to improve something with the front setup in order to still have a good race. I think the best pace will be around 1:37.5, and I'd be very happy to get in the high 1:37s, but we'll have to find something in order to do that. I'm not hoping for a wet race, because although it's true that we might be able to have more fun, racing in the dry makes it possible to understand more. Really, both options are fine."

Nicky Hayden (Ducati Marlboro Team) 13th, 1:38.922

"I really thought we had made some good progress yesterday, and I'm certainly not thrilled about qualifying thirteenth, especially when we were third this morning?I liked the sound of that a lot better. This morning we went out on the slicks and had a pretty decent feeling for a patchy track. In the afternoon, the track was pretty dry apart from a few patches, but it was definitely cooler and dirty, which didn't help with the tyres. I just wasn't able to get enough grip, especially in the front and over the bumps. I had one front tyre that we couldn't get to come in for some reason, and between losing those laps and coming back in to change it, we lost some time there. We also made a change with the rear to try to get it to turn better, and maybe we went too far and got it a bit wrong. Anyway, that clearly wasn't good enough, but we'll give it our best tomorrow."

Shocker! Instant messaging gains popularity as TXTing declines, BBM to blame

Apparently, those young'uns just love their BBM. According to a report by the research group Mobile Youth, young folk (read: those of you between 15 and 24) are increasingly abandoning SMS in favor of instant messaging apps, with texting expected to drop off 20 percent over the next two years. The main culprit? BlackBerry Messenger, which now boasts over 39 million users, many of them living outside the US. In fact, it's in the UK, Indonesia, South Africa, and Brazil -- all popular markets for BBM -- that Mobile Youth expects texting to dwindle the most. And if BBM is to blame, well, that drop-off could be just the beginning.

Barry Diller's IAC Swings to $18.1 Million First-Quarter Profit

NEW YORK ? Barry Diller?s IAC swung to a first-quarter profit as revenue jumped 22 percent.

The Internet company, which includes Ben Silverman?s multi-media studio Electus, CollegeHumor and production firm Notional and owns half of the Newsweek Daily Beast Company joint venture, among others, reported a profit of $18.1 million. That compared with a year-ago loss of $18.7 million.

The year-ago result was also dragged down by an impairment charge related to an investment. Revenue rose 22 percent to $460.2 million.

Chairman Diller, a former movie studio boss, has in recent years expanded the company's media and entertainment activities.

IAC?s ?media and other? segment, which includes Electus, CollegeHumor, Newsweek Daily Beast and more, grew revenue 13 percent to $54.3 million, with the company citing Electus and Notional as contributors to the gain. The unit?s operating loss narrowed slightly from $3.8 million to $3.7 million. IAC mentioned a narrowed loss at what is now Newsweek Daily Beast as a key reason.

On a conference call, Diller said he expects the value of a recent five-year extension of a search deal with Google to be $5.5 billion, compared with $3.5 billion in estimated revenue for the original deal. "It's obviously significant," he said.

Asked about the outlook for possible future synergies at Newsweek Daily Beast, Diller said it is still early in the process and pointed out that the Daily Beast site already helps sell the Newsweek print product. He added that there may not be much to say about the integration, which is still underway, for at least six months.

Fedora dons the new Gnome

April 20, 2011

By Joab Jackson | IDG News Service

The next version of Fedora will be the first major Linux distribution to use the radically updated Gnome as its default desktop interface.

This OS, whose beta version was released Tuesday, will also feature a reworked boot loading system.

[ Track the latest trends in open source with InfoWorld's Open Sources blog and Technology: Open Source newsletter. ]

"Fedora 15 has some pretty large feature changes," said Jared Smith, who is the Fedora project leader, noting that, by way of comparison, Fedora 14 had more fine-tuning, under-the-cover changes.

Maintained by volunteers, Fedora is the open source distribution that fields many of the new features that may later end up in Red Hat's flagship Linux-based OS, Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL). Typically, new releases of Fedora come out every six months or so.

This new beta release is the first to feature the next generation?Gnome shell and desktop interface. "It is significantly different from the Gnome 2 desktop. It has a different way of organizing things, and will require people to get used to some things being different," Smith said, though he added that users will enjoy it more once they learn Gnome's new ways.

The new Fedora also is deploying a new initialization and session manager system, the software that stages the programs and services that get automatically started when the computer is booted up.

Up until now Fedora used SysVinit and Upstart, but the new version uses systemd, which is faster and more sophisticated. It can load programs and services in parallel as the computer boots up, taking advantage of the multiple cores in today's server processors.

Systemd can also stagger the startup of some programs until they are required, which can quicken boot time even further. For instance, "it will not start a Web server until the first request comes along," Smith said.

Also potentially appealing to administrators would be ability to do what Smith called consistent network device naming.

In many cases, servers may have multiple Ethernet connections, and an administrator unfamiliar with that box may have difficultly figuring out which physical port corresponds to the name Linux assigned to that device. So a Dell engineer provided software that generates names for the devices based on their physical location on the PCI bus in the server.

Fedora 15 also features dynamic firewall management, which offers the ability to make changes to the firewall without requiring a restart to the firewall software. It also features a new power management tool called PowerTop.

For the end user, the new software comes with the LibreOffice productivity suite, an offshoot of the open source OpenOffice.

The beta version of Fedora 15, can be downloaded now, and the final version is expected to be released in late May, according to Smith.

Abandoned Dialogue - Small Business Trends

sales cartoon

For a while there at one of my earlier jobs it seemed like management got all touchy-feely.

All of a sudden they wanted to know what I thought, what I felt, what I had to say. It was sort of fun for a while, and it felt like maybe some changes might occur as a result, but after a few weeks you could tell they regretted opening this can of worms and all of our thoughts, feelings and suggestions went right out the window as we returned to business as usual.

The above cartoon wasn?t far behind.

Groupon: ?Getting It in the Ass? in China

A Global Mobile Internet Conference kicked off last night in Beijing. The opening event was an on-stage interview with John Liu, head of Google's China operations, followed by a panel discussion with several entrepreneurs and executives from MSN and Zynga. The interview was titled "How foreign companies can succeed in China", a rather amusing title considering that no foreign Internet company has ever achieved a dominant position in the People's Republic.

ChargePoint lets you reserve electric charging stations, cuts down on alternative fueling fistfights

One day in the future, we'll all drive around in electric cars and gas pumps will be replaced by clean charging stations. Also, free ice cream. Until then, get it line -- or better yet, reserve a spot online courtesy of ChargePoint's online database of alternative fueling stations. The Coulomb Technologies-run site displays charging stations on a Google Map, with a colored pin letting you know in real-time whether someone is currently topping off their Tesla. If you're the type with foresight -- you did buy an electric car, after all -- you can schedule some quality time with an outlet on the site using your ChargePass card. The cost of charging is determined by the station's manager, and appointments can be cancelled up to 24 hours in advance. The site has some serious competition on the EV charging map, courtesy of the newly launched GeoEVSE, a collaboration between US Department of Energy, Google, and 80 other companies. Maybe the new reservations feature will help ChargePoint win the race to your heart.

Qualifying well still important ? Renault | 2011 Turkish Grand Prix

28 April 2011 by Keith Collantine

Vitaly Petrov, Renault, Shanghai, 2011

Vitaly Petrov, Renault, Shanghai, 2011

Changes in race strategy have prompted questions over whether qualifying well is less important in 2011 than it used to be.

Renault?s[1] technical director James Allison has offered a perspective on the discussion, pointing out that qualifying poorly cost the team in Shanghai:

?Much of what went wrong for us came from failing to qualify in the position that the car merited. Not getting the car through into Q3 meant that we had to fight an uphill battle in the race.?

Vitaly Petrov[2] and Nick Heidfeld started tenth and 16th[3] and found it difficult to make up ground as Allison explains:

?We didn?t make quite such a good start as we had done during the previous two races and all of this combined with the result that we had to struggle through the race just to finish in the minor places.?

Allison said the R31 should be able to reach Q3 on a regular basis: ?It?s sufficiently fast to be healthily-placed in the top ten in qualifying, which gives you half a chance come Sunday.

?The car also quite kind on its tyres and so it tends to run more strongly in races than it does in qualifying. I don?t want to tempt providence, but it has also been reasonably reliable so far.?

The team are bringing several updates to the car for in Istanbul: ?There will be a different front wing, some modifications around the nose, updates to the air intake area of the car and some tweaks to the floor.?

Cloud failover a challenge for Amazon competitors, too

April 27, 2011

The outage in Amazon's Elastic Compute Cloud service last week highlighted the limitations of load balancing and failover systems designed to keep applications running in case of failure. But Amazon isn't the only cloud vendor whose systems can't guarantee 100% uptime.

Building cloud-based applications that can fail over from one data center to another is difficult and may require the customer to have sophisticated technology expertise. Customers may have to work closely with the cloud vendor and purchase third-party load-balancing products to keep applications running in the event of failures like the one that hit Amazon.

[ Also on InfoWorld: Some data irrecoverable after Amazon Web Services crash and Amazon EC2 outage calls 'availability zones' into question. | Get the no-nonsense explanations and advice you need to take real advantage of cloud computing in InfoWorld editors' 21-page Cloud Computing Deep Dive PDF special report. ]

ZONING OUT: Amazon EC2 outage calls 'availability zones' into question

GoGrid, which offers infrastructure-as-a-service computing in a fashion similar to Amazon's, offers service credits to customers when uptime falls below 100%, but that doesn't mean the cloud service never goes down.

"For the service elements we deliver, we're saying that we expect them to be up 100% of the time, and if they're not were going to compensate you," says GoGrid CEO and founder John Keagy. "Things do fail. Customers should not interpret a 100% service-level commitment as a 100% service-level guarantee."

But customers can keep their applications running through downtime if they are willing to put some extra work into it, Keagy says. Amazon customers who didn't have robust disaster recovery and failover plans were more likely to suffer downtime last week than those who planned ahead, he says.

SLAs: In the cloud, watch out for deceptive service-level agreements

GoGrid's cloud offerings are spread across 11 data centers, mostly run by co-location providers. Customers that want applications to fail over from one data center to another can use global traffic management products made by third parties, Keagy says. Customers can also achieve this extra level of protection entirely through services offered by GoGrid, but this "has to be architected in conjunction with us to get that done," Keagy says.

"That's what infrastructure is all about," Keagy says. "This is not platform as a service or software as a service. This is raw infrastructure that requires the user to have some responsibility for how they implement things."

Amazon lets customers host applications in multiple "availability zones" for an extra fee, but it's not clear how far apart these zones are. Last week, failures hit multiple availability zones.

'Desperate Housewives' Insider Backs Nicollette Sheridan's Story as ABC Lawsuit Heats Up (Exclusive)

Alberto E. Rodriguez/Getty Images

Nicolette Sheridan

A former executive producer of Desperate Housewives?has come forward with testimony that supports Nicollette Sheridan?in the actress's sex discrimination and wrongful termination lawsuit against ABC and series creator Marc Cherry.

Lori Kirkland Baker, an Emmy-winning TV producer who worked on Housewives?from May 2007 through May 2009, has submitted a sworn declaration in the case that supports Sheridan's timeline of events that led to her firing from the hit dramedy.

As we first reported last April, Sheridan filed a bombshell $20 million lawsuit alleging she was hit in the face by Cherry and wrongfully terminated from the series because, among other reasons, she is a woman. Sheridan later dropped her causes of action for intentional infliction of emotional distress and discrimination based on sexual orientation and age. But the rest of the case is now heating up, with a key summary judgment hearing set for May 3.

In advance of that hearing, both Sheridan and ABC/Cherry have filed extensive court papers outlining their cases and the evidence collected so far (both Sheridan and Cherry, for example, already have sat for depositions.)

To win at this stage, ABC must convince Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Elizabeth Allen White?that the undisputed facts show Sheridan's allegations to be without merit.

"Sheridan was obviously unhappy to lose her job as a highly-compensated star of Desperate Housewives," the ABC/Cherry motion for summary judgment argues. "However, she cannot state a legal claim based on the creative decisions and actions challenged in her lawsuit."

A key dispute involves the timeline of events. Both sides agree that Sheridan, who was making $175,000 per episode in Season 5 of the show, was told in February 2009 that her character Edie Britt was being killed off. But ABC and Cherry argue in their motion that the decision to kill Sheridan's character was actually made nine months earlier, in May 2008, when "after discussing the death of Edie with the other staff writers and producers," Cherry got the green light from both producer Touchstone Television and ABC to dump the character.

If true, that would poke a big hole in Sheridan's theory that an alleged September 24, 2008 altercation with Cherry--in which he is said to have slapped her in the face on the set--and her subsequent complaints about it, were major reasons she was given the boot.

But now Kirkland Baker, who was one of those staff writers and producers working on Housewives?during the fifth season, has come forward to say she didn't know Sheridan's character would be eliminated until at least September 2008.

"In fall of 2008, Mr. Cherry began talking with the writing staff, myself included, about killing off the Edie Britt character," Kirkland Baker says in her April 9 declaration, a copy of which was obtained by THR. "I have no recollection of any decision to kill off the Edie Britt character prior to fall of 2008."

And around the time of the alleged Sheridan slap, says Kirkland Baker, "Mr. Cherry had expressed to the writers, in my presence, increasing frustration with Ms. Sheridan." That led to a December meeting in which Cherry told the writing staff that he had met with then-ABC president Steve McPherson?and had decided to kill off the Sheridan character at the end of Season 5, according to the declaration.

However, after Cherry returned from attending the inauguration party for President Obama in January 2009, "Mr. Cherry advised the writing staff that he'd changed his mind about the timing of Edie Britt's death," Kirkland Baker says. "Rather than waiting for the end of the season, he wanted to change course and, instead, have Edie Britt killed off much sooner." The writer/producer says Cherry then instructed his staff that the character "was going to be killed off in one of the next episodes to be written and filmed."

ABC lead lawyer Adam Levin?declined to comment on the case. But the network's counter to that argument is that Kirkland Baker simply wasn't privy to the actual plans for the show until Cherry was prepared to go public. Indeed, in its motion, ABC says the fate of Sheridan's character "was kept highly confidential to prevent leaks to the media and public."

Still, Sheridan's lawyers argue in their court papers that the testimony of such insiders as Kirkland Baker and another writer-producer, Jeffrey Greenstein, "show that Cherry decided to kill off Edie after the September 24, 2008 assault and after she complained to Touchstone." (Sheridan's attorneys at Baute Crochetiere & Maloney were not available for comment.)

Why does the timeline matter? After all, it's only one aspect of the main case--whether Cherry hit Sheridan and whether she was fired due to discrimination.

But ABC is arguing that key parts of the litigation should be thrown out because it isn't possible that Sheridan could have been fired in response to an incident that hadn't happened when the firing decision was made. And Sheridan, in raising the timeline question, is trying to show that there's a real dispute over the facts in the case--a dispute she argues will require a trial, thus preventing the case from being dismissed at this stage.

The stage is set for some courtroom fireworks on May 3. If Sheridan's case survives the hearing, a trial is set for June 8 in downtown Los Angeles.

Scion FR-S Concept Is So Hot, We Can Taste It

By Justin Hyde, Jalopnik

After the most difficult gestation since someone decided ?Spiderman? needed to be a musical, the Scion FR-S Concept finally appeared at the New York Auto Show, carrying the hopes for a true compact rear-wheel-drive sports car ? actually coated in candy.

The latest iteration of the Toyota-Subaru joint venture known as the FT-86 appeared with a body that makes a pledge to uphold Toyota chief Akio Toyoda?s pledge to put some passion back into the company?s vehicles. Blunt, smooth and compact, yet with the long hood of a proper rear-wheel-drive car, the FR-S should easily be the most handsome Scion ever, when a production version appears within a year.

Toyota only revealed partial information about the heart of the FR-S, saying it would sport a 2.0-liter boxer engine of unspecified power tweaked with a Toyota direct-injection system, paired with six-speed transmissions of either manual or automatic stirring.

It?s such an attractive car ? the kind of sports coupe forgotten in a rush to fuel savings ? that we could almost taste it. Apparently it would taste pretty sweet, according to this line from the press release: ?The FR-S Concept is layered in rich coats of Code Red, the appropriately named color that consists of a custom blend of candy and a developmental additive from BASF called Mearlite SSQ.?

Scion. First with cars you want to lick.

That is also the reason why cars should undergo regular maintenance to ensure that they will stay in good condition.

Travelling to different places is troublesome without a means of transportation. Its a good thing that some auto mechanic shops have a lot of spare parts in their inventory and if you are lucky, then it wont take a long time before you and your car can hit the roads again. Advanced air conditioning systems, sound systems and various car equipment are now available to the newer car versions that are now currently released in the market. These new add ons may indeed prove to be special for your every need. However, if you don't care for the overall performance of your car, then all of these will be a waste.

Auto mechanic shops offer different kind of car services like regular car maintenance, wheel alignment, wheel retreading, break repairs, oil change and so much more. At the first signs of a car problem, you should go to the nearest car repair shop before the problem gets worse. If you don't, then the problem can get worse and you might even encounter an accident while you are on the road.

Driving safely can also help you lengthen your cars lifespan, because you will be less likely to encounter accidents on the road. It wont be an exaggeration to say that a world without auto mechanic shops, is a world with a lot of car problems and we should be thankful that these shops are out there when we need them the most.

Why and How Apple Collects Your iPhone Location Data

Apple claims turning Location Services to "Off" will cease all transmission of geodata from a device to Apple. Photo: Jon Snyder/Wired.com

iPhone and iPad customers were spooked Wednesday to find out that their devices have recorded a detailed history of their geographical locations for the past year in an unprotected file. But it turns out that Apple already explained its location-collection practices in a detailed letter ? almost a year ago.

And even though Apple has provided an explanation, there?s still a problem ? the fact that this file containing the data is so easily accessible to anyone, and the fact that this data is stored in such an intricate manner that doesn?t seem to benefit the customer.

?I?m guessing someone screwed up,? said David Navalho, a pHD student specializing in location services on mobile devices with advanced sensors. ?It?s basically bad for users. If someone steals the phone they have access to a lot of data.?

The privacy scare stems from a discovery by two data scientists, who revealed Wednesday that iPhones and iPads contain an unencrypted file called ?consolidated.db,? which has been tracking and recording your location data in a log accompanied with time stamps for the past 10 months.

Apple?s general counsel Bruce Sewell in July 2010 sent a 13-page letter (.pdf) explaining its location-data-collection techniques in response to a request from Congressmen Joe Barton and Edward Markey asking for Apple to disclose such practices (.pdf). (Incidentally, Markey authored the ?Do Not Track? bill to stop online companies from tracking children.)

Apple doesn?t specifically note the ?consolidated.db? file in the letter, but the letter explains how and why Apple keeps such a detailed log of location data from mobile devices.

How is Apple collecting geodata?

According to Apple?s letter, geodata is being tracked and transmitted to Apple?only if a customer toggles the Location Services option in the settings menu to ?On.? If it?s off, no location-based information will be collected.

If the Location Services setting is flipped on, the iPhone, 3G iPad and, to a more limited extent, the iPod Touch and the Wi-Fi iPad, are transmitting geodata to Apple under different circumstances.

Apple is collecting information about nearby cell towers and Wi-Fi access points whenever you request current location information. Sometimes it will also do this automatically when you?re using a location-based service, such as a GPS app.

As for GPS information, Apple is collecting GPS location data only when a customer uses an application requiring GPS capabilities.

Apple claims the collected geodata is stored on the iOS device, then anonymized with a random identification number generated every 24 hours by the iOS device, and finally transmitted over an encrypted Wi-Fi network every 12 hours (or later if there?s no Wi-Fi available) to Apple. That means Apple and its partners can?t use this collected geodata to personally identify a user.

At Apple, the data gets stored in a database ?accessible only by Apple,? the letter says.

?When a customer requests current location information, the device encrypts and transmits Cell Tower and Wi-Fi Access Point Information and the device?s GPS coordinates (if available) over a secure Wi-Fi Internet connection to Apple,? Apple wrote in the letter.

Why is Apple collecting geodata?

The purpose of all this, according to Apple, is to maintain a comprehensive location database, which in turn provides quicker and more precise location services.

?Apple must be able to determine quickly and precisely where a device is located,? Apple said in its letter. ?To do this, Apple maintains a secure database containing information regarding known locations of cell towers and Wi-Fi access points.?

In older versions of Apple?s mobile OS (1.1.3 to 3.1), Apple relied on Google and Skyhook Wireless to provide location-based services ? so Apple left data collection to them. But ever since April 2010, starting with iPhone OS 3.2 and continuing into the current iOS 4 software, Apple has started using its own databases to provide location-based services to iOS devices.

?These databases must be updated continuously to account for, among other things, the ever-changing physical landscape, more innovative uses of mobile technology, and the increasing number of Apple?s users,? Apple said in its letter.

Navalho explained that mobile location services work like this: To get your location, first the iPhone or iPad pulls from Apple?s database containing previously stored information about nearby cell towers and Wi-Fi spots to quickly triangulate your location, and then finally the GPS chip analyzes how long it takes satellite signals to reach the device in order to pinpoint location.

In short, Apple?s stored location database is intended to assist and quicken location processes on iOS mobile devices.

The problems

However, one problem here is that after this information is sent to Apple, there?s no customer benefit for that geodata to be stored on your iPhone or iPad for any longer, Navalho said.

In other words, after that data is transmitted to Apple ?every 12 hours,? Apple?s database should already have the data needed to improve your location services, and there?s no reason for it to stick around on your device ? especially after 10 months.

Plus, Apple explicitly said this database is ?accessible only to Apple? ? but in actuality the database of your approximate locations is accessible to anyone with physical or remote?access to your iPhone or iPad. Again, that?s a security issue.

?There?s really no reason for the information to be there,? Navalho said. ?I?ll just assume they didn?t erase it and that it?s a security issue, and hopefully they?ll fix it.?

Therefore, the core issue reported Wednesday remains the same: A hacker or thief gaining access to your iPhone or iPad can easily dig into the consolidated.db file and figure out where you live, or other places you?ve frequented. Apple uses rich geodata to assist your location services, but it doesn?t need to be stored on your device permanently.

?What Apple is doing actually puts users very much at risk,? said Sharon Nissim, consumer privacy counsel of the Electronic Privacy Information Center. ?If one of these devices is stolen, [the thief] could easily discover details about the owner?s movements.?

Sport events in Milan city
Limousine service: Driver available full day 8 hrs. Pick up in Milan area droop off in Milan area. Built in Villa Reale park, north of Monza, a woodland setting the site has three tracks ? the 5.793 kilometres (3.600 mi) Grand Prix track, the 2.405 kilometres (1.494 mi) Junior track, and a decaying 4.250 kilometres (2.641 mi) high speed track with steep bankings. Major features of the main track include the Curva di Lesmo, the Curva Parabolica, and the Variante Ascari. The high speed curve, Curva Grande, is located after a slow corner, but usually taken flat out by Grand Prix cars. The circuit, better known for hosting the Formula One Italian Grand Prix, is notable for the fact that drivers are on full throttle for a higher-than-average percentage of the lap due to its long straights, and is usually the scenario in which the open-wheeled F1 cars show the raw speed they are capable of (372 kilometres per hour (231 mph) during the V10 engined formula). It is mostly a flat circuit but has a notable, though gradual, gradient from the second Lesmos to the Variante Ascari. Due to the low aerodynamic profile needed, with its resulting low downforce, the grip is very low; understeer, and the resulting slide can hurt overall speed - and are more serious issues than at other circuits, however, the opposite effect, oversteer, is also present in the second sector, requiring the use of a very distinctive opposite lock technique. Since both maximum power, and minimal drag is the key for speed on the straights, only competitors with enough power at their disposal are able to challenge for the top places. The Monza circuit has been the arena of some of the most tragic episodes in Formula One racing, especially in the early years of the world championship. Since those times, modifications have been introduced to improve spectators safety and reduce curve speed, but it is still criticised by the current drivers for its lack of run-off areas, most notoriously at the chicane that cuts the Variante della Roggia. The circuit is also known to be the spiritual home of the Scuderia Ferrari and their passionate supporters, the Tifosi.(From Wikipedia) ?
