Briefs: Non-football Boise St. joins Big West

Boise State has agreed to make the Big West Conference its new home for all non-football sports. Boise State president Bob Kustra announced the school has accepted an invitation to join the conference starting July 1.

The university has been searching for a new league since the football team agreed to join the Big East next season, a move that also brought an end to the school's membership in the Mountain West Conference.

Marquette assistant fired for violations: Marquette men's basketball coach Buzz Williams has announced the dismissal of assistant Scott Monarch, and Williams will serve a one-game suspension as part of the school's self-imposed sanctions for recruiting rules violations reported to the NCAA.

Majerus to take leave of absence

Saint Louis basketball coach Rick Majerus is taking a leave of absence for at least the upcoming season.

The university said assistant coach Jim Crews will direct the team as interim coach, and that a decision hasn't been made for the 2013-14 season.

The 64-year-old Majerus is hospitalized in California undergoing evaluation and treatment for an ongoing heart condition, school spokesman Brian Kunderman said.

Ex-OSU star may be re-tried: Supporters of Oklahoma State basketball player Darrell Williams, who is convicted of sexually assaulting two women at a party, say he's a victim of misidentification in a case with no physical evidence. Judge Phillip Corley is considering whether to give him a new trial after a defense motion claiming new evidence.

Ref facing charge of murder in L.A.

An attorney for a professional tennis referee accused of killing her 80-year-old husband denounced the allegations and criticized Los Angeles police for arresting her in New York, where she would have been a line judge in next week's U.S. Open. Lois Goodman, 70, appeared briefly in Superior Court in Van Nuys, but her arraignment and bond hearing were continued to Wednesday.

Wozniacki's streak ends: Caroline Wozniacki's 20-match winning streak in New Haven, Conn., ended when the four-time defending champion retired from her semifinal match with Maria Kirilenko with a knee injury.

Winston-Salem Open: Defending champ John Isner beat France's Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 3-6, 7-6 (7-3) in a semifinal.

Logano wins Bristol Nationwide race

Joey Logano has picked up his first Nationwide Series win at Bristol Motor Speedway.

Logano chased down Kevin Harvick, then held on over a series of late cautions for his sixth win of the season.

Ricky Stenhouse Jr., who finished second, and Elliott Sadler had contact on the final restart, with three laps remaining in Friday night's race.

Stenhouse immediately went to Sadler's car and apologized, but Sadler said the door has been opened for them to race each other hard over the stretch for the championship.

Sprint Cup: Rain has washed out qualifying at Bristol Motor Speedway, which means Casey Mears will start from the pole in tonight's IRWIN Tools Night Race. The lineup was set by speeds from Friday's first practice session.

Swimming

Northside to host Masters event

Northside ISD's National Aquatic Center and Natatorium has been selected as site for the 2015 U.S. Masters Swimming National Short Course Championship.

The event will be in late April of that year at dates to be announced. San Antonio Sports and Northside ISD teamed on the bid.

U.S. Masters Swimming, the national governing body of the sport for adult competitors, made the announcement Thursday.

The competition will attract roughly 2,000 swimmers to the venue, which is scheduled for completion in the spring. The aquatic center is partly funded by the Bexar County visitor tax extension approved by voters in 2008.

Dancing days here again? Serena Williams caused a stir with her celebratory "crip walk" dance when she beat Maria Sharapova at the Olympics this month, but has nothing planned if she wins the U.S. Open. She says the first dance was impromptu. She adds: "I have to win seven matches, so we'll see."
