Pedestrian detection systems are nothing new to the automotive industry, but Volvo is working on a new technology that should keep the furry creatures of the world a little safer.

Based on Volvo?s Pedestrian Detection with Full Auto Brake system, the new system uses radar and camera technology to detect animals that may have wander onto the road ahead. The system is designed to warn the driver via in cabin alerts, but the bunny-saving technology is also capable of automatically braking the car.

?We can see in our accident statistics that this is an important area to prioritize,? Andreas Eidehall, technical expert in the field of active safety systems at Volvo, said. ?What is more, we know that there is considerable market interest in this type of safety system. During demonstrations of Pedestrian Detection with Full Auto Brake, we were often asked about protection from accidents with wild animals.?

Volvo says the system will initially be programmed to avoid collisions with larger animals such as deer and moose ? which pose the biggest threat to vehicle occupants ? but will be capable of learning how to recognize various other animals. Volvo says it is still developing the ?necessary decision-making mechanisms the system must respond to,? indicating the system won?t automatically slam on the brakes for smaller woodland creatures, which could lead to a more problematic rear-end crash.

Volvo hasn?t announced when the system will be ready for retail sales, but says it should appear in road-going cars in a ?few years time.? Volvo?s S60, V60, XC60, V70, XC70 and S80 models already come equipped with the company?s Pedestrian Detection with Full Auto Brake, so they will likely be the first to sport the animal detection system.
