The current failing economy has hurt almost everyone across every industry. The automotive accessory and after-market product industry is no exception. Usually, during a financial crisis, the average person begins to go berserk with cutting things out of their budget they don?t really need. Things such as propane grills that can cook a steak to any finish with laser-guided meat temperature perfection, and coffeemakers that cost more than the average used car, yet only make coffee.

Right behind the grill with enough technology to make NASA jealous and the coffeemaker that features a digital display to let you know when your coffee is done; comes the automotive industry. Horsepower and torque begin to fade from the average driver?s mind, and scary words like ?M.P.G.? and ?Reliability? creep in their place.

Going on its? 60th annual gathering this year, Autorama is one of the longest running car and trade shows for the automotive aftermarket industry.

Bob Millard, general manager of the International Show Car Association, organizes the annual event; and had this to say: ?The building and collecting of hot rods is a multi billion-dollar industry, with about 30 percent of its business having roots in the Motor City. Since vintage cars come from just about every state in the country, that?s big business for the aftermarket automotive products industry.?

Not only does this event support the motor sports hobby as a whole, but also provides the chance for smaller companies to bring their products to a global marketplace.

One such company is Woodward Fab. Originally founded as a heavy machinery shop in 1966, After sales began slowing, the company switched to producing machinery that creates fenders, quarter panels, and other body sheet-metal 10 years ago.

Phillip Heck of Woodward Fab said ?From this event, we?ll meet people from around the world. People from New Zealand and Australia, in particular, will have a container in California, and they?ll come on a shopping spree to events like this on maybe a six-week vacation. They?ll fill entire containers and ship them back.?

It looks like the future of motor sports isn?t as shaky as it first seems on the outside. As long as these type of shows can continue on their current scale, even people who consider the track their second home can not only have their steak, but also have it cooked to perfection with laser precision.
