CSN: BoSox blow 4-run lead in 9th, lose to Angels

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- In what must rank as their worst loss of the season, the Red Sox lost in walk-off fashion to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, 9-7, after being an out away from a win in the ninth with a four-run lead.????

Josh Hamilton smoked a two-run homer off Craig Breslow in the bottom of the 11th, scoring Brad Hawpe in front of him, to secure the win for the Angels, snapping the Red Sox' five-game winning streak.????

The Red Sox led comfortably 7-3 in the ninth before Alex Wilson allowed two singles and a hit batter to fill the bases. Closer Koji Uehara came in to face Albert Pujols, who laced a single to center to score two runs.???

Josh Hamilton followed with a run-scoring single to right before Howie Kendrick hit a routine grounder to third baseman Brandon Snyder, who seemed to have an easy game-ending forceout at second.????

But Snyder's throw to Dustin Pedroia sailed over the second baseman's head and into right field and pinch-runner Colin Cowgill scored the tying run.????

The Sox stranded 15 baserunners along the way.????

Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Daniel Nava combined for six hits, three RBI and three runs scored. Jose Iglesias, Dustin Pedroia and Brock Holt -- the latter making his Red Sox debut -- also contributed an RBI. Nava had his second four-hit game of the season.????

After the Angels went ahead with 3-2 with a run in the third, the Sox scored three times in the fourth highlighted by Saltalamacchia's second double which scored two runs.????

Ryan Dempster gave the Sox 6 1/3 innings and allowed three runs - just two of them earned. He allowed solo homers to Howie Kendrick in the second and Mike Trout in the third but otherwise stayed out of big innings.????

It marked the seventh straight game in which a Red Sox starting pitcher had allowed two earned runs or fewer.????

Lefty reliever Andrew Miller left the game with a left ankle injury when he attempted to get out of the way of a comebacker, then, off-balance, headed to back up home plate. Miller collapsed between the mound and home plate and had to helped off the field.

Even with the meltdown by the bullpen, the Red Sox would?have held on for the win had not the third baseman's throwing?error on a simple force play at third in the bottom of the ninth,?allowing the tying run to score.

TURNING POINT
In the ninth, Alex Wilson was an out away?from closing out the game when he hit Mike Trout to fill the?bases. From there, it all unraveled as the Angels scored four?times to tie the game.
